While walking around the PAX 09 show floor, I came upon Adam Sessler. He wasn’t surrounded by the G4 entourage or the usual body guards: he was just in the middle of the EA booth talking with vendors and other gamers.
I waited patiently until Mr. Sessler had finished his conversation, as I didn’t want to interrupt or appear rude. Then I casually went up and introduced myself. I had written an article last year about Adam’s coverage of PAX08, but couldn’t get near him because of all the security.
Adam was more than happy to talk with all his fans, including myself. I told him how I watched him during his beginnings at Extended Play (when he was a struggling journalist at ZDTV). He elaborated on how he was awarded that job, as the previous host was, shall we say, more adult-oriented.
Adam was referred to the job by a friend and he landed the gig. As we all know, ZDTV was transformed to the short-lived TechTV, at which point Extended Play was changed to X-play. Then G4 bought TechTV and practically gutted all of the programming; but X-play remains one of G4’s strongest shows. It is these sequence of events that Adam was transformed from a “nobody” into one of the gaming industry’s top journalistic celebrities. He joked about how he should write an autobiography about the whole thing.
I asked if Adam would entertain an interview about his newfound celebrity, how he was thrust into it, and how he handles it. We made a gentleman’s arrangement to followup on this interview, but he may have just been playing nice.
Either way, Adam is genuinely a great fellow. I hope to conduct an interview soon about the Tale of Adam.
