What OCMS is NOT for…

by Alan McCloskeyJanuary 30, 2009August 25, 2014054

I get a few reviewer applications each month.  We can always use the extra help, and there are certainly things to do.  Most of the time, these people do not pan out, simply because they are greedy, and think I’m an idiot.  They want to see if they can get away with free product samples for nothing.

OCModShop is not here to supply deadbeats with products.  It is here primarially to provide information to the tech community, and also allows me to make a living.  There is no room for anything not meeting those goals.

Sure, our trusted reviewers get products; some really nice ones sometimes.  But you have to EARN my trust that you’re not going to run off with it.  It has happened several times in the past that reviewers give me the ol’ middle finger and run off with hundreds of dollars in technology…  which I am ultimately responsible for.   Legally, all product is the property of OCModShop until it is released to the reviewer.  I can have the police show up at your door of anyone who “steals” product. No tech site is going to just take your word that you’re a nice guy and send you an expensive product.

Some tech sites even go as far as making you supply your credit card, which will be charged if you don’t deliver a review within a certain amount of time.  I don’t do this… not yet anyway.

A good reviewer is one who genuinely feels tethered to the tech community, and wants to share their knowledge with the world.  Working with an established tech site also boosts your credibility as a journalist, and we have helped launch several people into journalism and gaming careers.

We can always use help, and there are several areas where we need frequent contributions or content updates.  Just be realistic and know that you’re not going to be first in line for the latest CPU and video card samples.
