The Sapphire Radeon X800 is clocked at 391.5 MHz core and 351 (702 DDR) MHz memory. The 391.5 MHz core clock is a bit shy of the 400 MHz ATI specs. We’re not sure of the reason why Sapphire would choose to downclock their cards from the reference specifications. They did; however, include an overclocking utility, Redline, that easily clocks the core to 400+ MHz. They also doubled the memory from ATI’s reference to 256MB, which is a nice bonus.

“MSRP of $299, huh? Yeah, right. That’s a joke! Big time! I like to think of MSRP (manufacturer’s suggested retail price) as the high point when it comes to actual retail pricing. Video cards prove that wishful thinking wrong all the time, but ATi’s new kid on the block – the X800 XL – is selling for much higher than its announced MSRP. We all knew this card would rock (or rather violently shake) the successful NVIDIA 6800 GT boat if it really hit streets at $300. That’s not happening though…try adding $100 to the MSRP. What was looking like a dead-on, hands-down lock for best-bang-for-the-buck glory is now on a more even playing field.
At a street price of $400 though, the X800 XL makes for a great competitor for the similarly priced 6800 GT, which is exactly what it’s meant to do. Does it make a great competitor as far as performance is concerned though? We have a Sapphire Radeon X800 XL here to find out.”

Whilst the NV43 derived 6200 has 4 fragment pipelines disabled from the NV43 6600 configuration, the NV44 chip is designed specifically for the entry level market so only 4 fragment pipelines are built into the chip, although it does still retain the same number of Vertex Shader units as NV43, standing at three. Although the NV43 based 6200 chip still has 4 pixel output units (ROP’s) the pipeline diagram on the previous page indicates that NV44 only has two – this is no surprise given the memory bandwidth and latencies it will be dealing with and because processing time is being increasingly spent within the fragment processors.”

XFX, intelligently, also knew that bigger NVIDIA partners would probably steal the limelight unless it did something special to its package. A pre-overclocked GPU speed was always unlikely, so XFX has gone with video RAM that runs at a full 20% faster than the default 1000MHz. That extra memory bandwidth, totalling 19.2GB/s off only a 128-bit bus, is the reason why XFX’s effort is between 5-10% faster than the competition in the majority of our benchmarks.”
