Upping the timings to CAS 2.5 with a RAS to CAS delay of 2 allowed the memory to boot and complete all of the stress tests. Above 400 MHz the memory would not operate properly unless we upped the voltage to 2.7 Volts, at which point the module would successfully complete the Memtest86 loop.”

“The Thermal Integrations TI-T707TN heatsink has a nice chewy 31mm diameter copper slug at its heart, and 70 very slender extruded aluminum fins in a radial pattern around the outside. The fins measure just 0.5mm in thickness and are straight from top to bottom, with a gentle curve to the outside. For those of us who are familiar with big square heatsinks the TI-T707TN is a drastic departure, and kind of interesting to look at as well. There are quite a few of companies challenging the traditional notions of what a heatsink should be shaped like, and for the most part these physical changes bring with them thermal and sometimes even acoustic advancements.”

The stock temperatures have a delta of two degress, and the Overclocked settings have temperature deltas of only 3 degrees! It’s very impressive to think that my overclocked processor under full load only gets 3 degrees hotter! Some of you may scoff at “only” a few degrees of temperature change, but considering the performance of the kit previously, a three degree drop is a big one!”

Others are installed for pure necessity. If you go to LAN parties as often as we do here at GruntvillE; something to carry that precious computer you spent all that money on is a necessity. Now there are lots of different ways of going about this task I have seen many a kitchen drawer handle slapped on top of a case. This is fine for an ultra-light case but can take some pretty bad looking reinforcement to be used on a larger mid-tower or full tower case.”

“Most people that have been modding computers for a while, know that rheostat’s are variable resistors with a wattage rating. There are a lot of schematics on the internet that will show you how to use a rheostat to control the current going to a fan. There is a downside to resisting the current directly by the rheostat and that is HEAT! When a rheostat resists current (Amperage), it will convert the current into heat causing the rheostat to get very hot, often too hot to touch directly. Although this isn’t necessarily bad, there are better methods of variable resistance fan control, such as using a voltage regulator with heat sinks and potentiometers like Sunbeam has with this Rheobus.”

“Optical drives are an old technology, but still constitute one of the pillars of ever computer system. A combo drive as the industry terms them, are a combination of a CD-R/RW burner with a DVD-ROM. The Samsung SM348 is a combo drive which boasts the following read and burn speeds for the four essential optical media platforms. The 24X CD-RW rewrite speed threw us for a bit of a loop because we were unable to find any CD-RW recordable media rated above the current “high-speed” of 10X to test with in our area. A quick check online shows us that the top speeds for CD-RW media (in Canada at least) looks like this; Maxell (10x), Memorex (10X), TDK (10X), Yamaha (10X), etc. Without an easily accessible supply of CDRW media rated near, or at 24X, this aspect of the Samsung SM-348 isn’t really being used – yet. As you’ll see, this also puts a bit of a dampener on our CDRW rewrite tests as the results are capped off at 10X.”

“The Tyan Tiger S2722 is based on the Intel server E7500 chipset and supports up to two Socket 603 Xeon processors with 512 KB L2 cache and a 400 MHz system bus to provide up to 3.2 GB/s of available bandwidth. We will be testing with two 2.0GHz Xeon parts, but there is no reason why the board couldn’t be outfit with just a single Xeon processor. The E7500 supports NetBurst microarchitecture and HyperThreading which are built into the Xeon processor. On board expansion consists of just two 64-bit 133/100/66MHz PCI-X slots and a regular 5V 32 bit 33MHz PCI slot. Realistically speaking, with the Tyan Tiger S2722 mounted in a 1U rack mount chassis, only one of the three slots would be available via a PCI or PCI-X 90 degree riser card. Memory support consists of four 184-pin DDR DIMM sockets which will hold up to a maximum of 8 GB of Registered ECC PC1600/2100 DDR memory (in pairs). Since the DIMMS are not slanted, taller DIMM’s may not fit under the hood of a 1U chassis. Standard height Registered ECC DIMM’s fit fine.”
