Xbox 360 Play and Charge Kit Review

One battery lasts around 25-30 hours of constant gaming, just as the package suggests. The battery can be charged when plugged up to the Xbox 360’s USB port, and continues to charge even when the console is powered off, so it may be best to charge while you sleep or when your signficant other makes you mow the lawn (yes, your mom falls into this category). The battery level can be monitored by the Xbox 360 console, so you know how low the wireless battery is getting. The controller’s LEDs will start blinking at you when the battery is at critical level, but you can still squeeze out about 2 hours of gameplay or talk time at this point.

The battery can be charged in a PC’s standard USB port, as well. Although Windows XP will recognize a USB has been plugged in, it doesn’t recognize the controller as a usable gamepad, even with the “Xbox 360 Controller for Windows” drivers installed.

The way I see it, I was going through a set of batteries every 10 hours. Now given the fact that I play my 360 an awful lot, the cost of batteries was begining to put a cramp in my style. Let’s break it down if you will.

For every six hour gaming session I have played, I find out my son played the 360 earlier or my wife left the machine on after playing. Either way, the charge that it does hold is certainly more then adequate for gaming sessions and the fact that you can plug the thing in and keep playing really is the frosting on the cake.

category rating comments
Quality 4 A well constructed, smooth and light battery pack that slides easily into the controller housing. The cable is about 9 feet long and the USB port is nice and tight but the connection on the controller should be much more sturdy. I want to feel a click and know that that sucker is locked in, this simply does not happen.
Innovation 5 A really good idea combining the charge while playing function, the actual charge time isn’t all that long either, I usually only charge it for around an hour and I’m sure I’ve done it at least 25 times since purchasing it.
Performance 5 It’s great, this sucker can hold a charge for all sorts of random amounts of time (again I’m factoring in the child factor) that range from four hours and up.
Installation 5 Please, if you can plug a USB cord in and know how to install a battery you can do this.
Value 5 It’s only 20 bucks for goodness sakes. You could go through 20 bucks worth of batteries in 2 weeks if you game all the time. If you own a wireless controller you need to buy this.
FINAL VERDICT: 5 out of 5 stars
