Boynq Toastit 7-in-1 USB Card Reader Review

Card readers are pretty handy these days. With everything that requires or uses memory sticks, flash drives, and SD cards now-a-days, toting around a card reader can be helpful for getting tasks accomplished in our busy lives.

So out rolls Boynq with a sweet 7-in-1 card reader in the shape of a… erm… toaster? A toaster! Whipping out a card reader is no big deal, but one in the shape of a friggin’ toaster… well that’s just magical. So why should you surrender your macho gamer/tech nerd status so you can carry around a card reader in the shape of a toaster? Because men with gadgets impress the ladies… especially if it means they might possibly be in to cooking or toasting bread. Never underestimate the power of hot peanut-buttered toast…

Here are some sweet specs:

  • 7 in 1 memory card reader (actual 27 in 1)
  • Compatibile with: Compact flash I & II, Microdrive, SD, MMC, Memory stick and xD
  • USB2.0 for high speed data transfer, maximum 480Mbps
  • Power and data transfer indication by orange LED
  • USB powered, no AC adaptor required
  • Plug and play, no software required

System requirements

  • A computer platform with USB 1.1 or 2.0 host connector port.
  • PC with operating system Windows 98 SE or above.
  • Mac OS 9.3 or above.

The Toastit looks slick, and it also looks outdated. If I went back in time, forty years ago to my grandma’s kitchen, I’m pretty sure the Toastit would be there in real-life toaster form. It’s black on both sides with a silver strip running across the top and down either side. There are three card slots on the top, the longest being above the 2 shorter ones which are adjacent to one another. Facing the Toastit, on either side there are little handles sticking out. Too small to grasp, they are there for aesthetics only and to help a would-be buyer notice how “authentic” the model design is.

The good news about the Toastit is that it is extremely easy to use. You plug it in to your USB port, stick in a card, and voila!, instant card-reading-action. I personally brought along my toastit because I lost the mini-usb for my digital camera. I plugged the Toastit into a friend’s computer and loaded up the SD card and the pictures immediately showed up on her screen. In addition, I brought my flash drive over with some massive movie files, and they downloaded almost instantaneously. So good, we know the thing works, and we know it works quickly.

The Toastit that I received is designated “pour homme”. Black in the Netherlands is apparently designated for men. Don’t worry girls; they’ve designed a beautiful lavender Toastit for us with white trim. Personally, I think the black looks much sleeker.

I like the size of the Toastit as it is quite small and lightweight. It is also very functional as a card reader. I admire Boynq’s individuality with the Toastit’s design, but I can’t help but feel like a dork when I take it out for use in public. Boynq’s products are also made in China, so the card reader feels cheap. Also, since it is designed like a toaster, why couldn’t the little cards pop out when you’re done? I think that would’ve been much cooler. In addition, I wish it could brown my Poptarts…
