DisplayLink USB Graphics Adapter

Multiple monitors used to be a luxury for the uber-geek or extreme office worker.  Nowadays multi-mon is practically essential in the workplace, and even at home.  Many people got used to the notion that multitasking required flipping through many windows, which is why the whole usability scheme of a “taskbar” became necessary.  Now that desktop space is so inexpensive, people prefer to have all of their windows visible at the same time.  Graphics professionals need multiple monitors just to have all of their tools available while still seeing the image they’re working on.

Regardless of your reasons, people are now used to running multiple monitors in everyday situations… but not every computer is equipped with multiple display ports.  Some monster cards, like the Sapphire 4850 X2 reviewed here, have four DVI ports, which is more than enough for even Al Gore.  Most add-on graphics cards only have 2 ports, and only one of them may be DVI.  Notebooks (and netbooks) usually only have a single VGA port, if they have one at all.  If only there was some way to upgrade your monitor and desktop space without opening your computer…

DisplayLink has the answer with their innovative USB to Graphics adaptors.  These little devices are small little boxes that plug into a USB port, and then connect to any DVI or VGA monitor.  The software uses your existing video card’s capabilities, so even full-motion video and 3D accelleration is still possible on your other monitors.

The DisplayLink DL-120/DL-160 chips work their magic by reducing the connection process between display and device to a simple USB cable, enabling instant cloning or extending of a desktop among multiple displays. It really is as simple as Plug and Play.  All you have to do it connect the DisplayLink adapter to a free USB port, and connect your monitor to the DVI port.  You can connect an analog monitor to the device using a standard DVI to VGA adapter, if you like.  If using a modern operating system like Windows Vista, then the software install is automatic.  Your desktop may blink a few times, but then your new monitor is ready.


Simply plug in USB and go

All you have to do once the hardware is initialized is expand your desktop to use the extra monitor.  Like regular multimon, you can position your new monitor to the left, right, top or bottom of your primary monitor.  There is also an icon in your toolbar that provides quicklinks to the settings of the USB-attached monitor.  You can change the color depth and resolution, as well as expand your desktop, set the monitor’s orientation, or mirror your existing display.  Even though the software will support widescreen and resolutions up to 1600×1200, the adapter detects the attached monitor’s capabilites.  Our test monitor had a maximum resolution of 1280×1024, and the software would only allow us to set the resolution up to that point.

Performance
Although the devices use the capabilities of your existing graphics card, the output must still be compressed and sent through USB, which means the display won’t be as snappy as a native device.  The more changes going on the display at once, the higher your CPU usage will be.  Although you can watch a full-screen movie on the extra monitor, but your CPU will be taxed.  On a low-powered laptop, we experienced choppy video,and some applications were slow to respond.  On a fast E6600 Core2Duo processor, the CPU usage only went up by 10%.


Monitor can be displayed on left or right of primary

You cannot game full-screen on it, as nearly all PC games will only work on the primary monitor.  The exception to this rule is Flight Simulator or any game that can be windowed and stretched across multiple monitors.  The performance will be so dismal that you will learn not to do that again.  You will be brutally reminded that these USB displays are for casual work like office tasks, web browsing, or watching video.

The DisplayLlink technology is definately neat, but not really all that useful unless you have no other options.  If you need multi-mon and have a video card with an additional DVI port, then by all means hook up a regular monitor to it for faster response times and smooth sailing.

You do need to have a moderately powerful CPU for this technology to work without a noticable performance hit.  We tested the DisplayLink adapter on a modern (but low-powered) notebook and had satisfactory results for office work, but video slowed everything else to a crawl.  A modern desktop computer with decent video card will do just fine, and the performance impact is minimal.

Triple 1280×1024 desktop

If you actually do have a need for this adapter, then you’re probably a laptop or netbook user and are probably doing office tasks.  This adapter is great for these applications, as well as “casual” multimon use, like when you need to do a presentation or hook up to a projector with little fuss.

The DisplayLink USB Graphics adapters are a great way to expand your multimonitor needs.  If you have any spare video ports on your computer or video card, use these as your first monitor expansion option.  If you expect this adapter to be as fast as your internal video card, then you will be rather disappointed.  You will get the most value from the DisplayLink adapters on a computer with very limited expansion options.  If you find yourself in this niche, then the DisplayLink Graphics adapter is a no-brainer.
