I set out at the beginning of this article to replace my 14 month old gaming mouse. It seemed to me a bit of a risk to go with Microsoft over someone like Logitech or Razor, who arguably have more experience when it comes to gaming mice. In fact he mouse I was replacing was from one of the above mentioned companies (I’m not going to say who). at the end of the day the Sidewinder mouse really comes across as a solid mouse with an excellent feature set. Couple that with Microsoft support and you have a product that you can rely on for years to come. The ability to customize so much about the mouse means that it’s practically guaranteed to work for you. Whether you like a feather light mouse or one that takes a bit of effort to move you’re covered. If you want to be able to chain in game commands together with a single button your set. With no real down side this keyboard is a definite winner in my book. I was happy with the functionality of the previous Xgene keyboard that we looked at and this new one does not disappoint either. Though it is longer than the other Xgene keyboard is it’s also thinner and a bit sleeker. This makes it a little more attractive to have out on the coffee table. In general, I think anyone looking for a MCE wireless keyboard will be very happy with Xgene’s keyboard it is an easy recommendation for me.

There are other mp3 players out there besides the iPod, believe it or not, and I’ve never quite understood the fascination with having 20+ gigs of storage on a portable music device, my S.Beat is a 1 gig and I’ve never filled it yet, there’s just not that much I like I guess. So I can’t figure out how people actually can listen to 20+ gigs of music, or have that much that they actually like…

CES 2008: Ortery Technologies has announced the world’s first first example what it describes as an "Office Photography Machine" and designed to make product photography – in particular 360-degree product animations – as painless as using a photocopier. The system consists of an illuminated box housing a turntable and curved rail which allow the camera (included) to be positioned within a hemispherical area around the object to be photographed. The really clever bit is that both box and camera may be controlled remotely from an attached PC, live view and all. This means that it is possible to simply place an object in the box and – without touching either it or the camera – create a full 3D view. More after the jump.

CES 2008: Alongside the NV24HD, Samsung also launched three new NV cameras without the high definition recording capability but featuring the latest processing technology for improved image quality and faster operation. First up is the NV40 – 10 megapixels and a 3x zoom are backed up with dual image stabilization. The display is a generous 2.5" and adapts to changing light conditions whilst the controls take the grid form known as ‘Smart Touch’. The NV30 drops the pixel count to 8 million and omits the optical stabilization in favor of an all-electronic system. The ‘baby’ NV4 has a non-protruding 3x zoom lens and 8 megapixels and also uses a more conventional button arrangement. All three will be available from February 2008 priced at £149, £179 and £199 for the NV4, NV30 and NV40 respectively.

CES 2008: Casio’s EX-Z100 and EX-Z200 are 10.1 megapixel compacts featuring, for the first time on a Casio, 28 – 112mm equivalent zoom lenses. Both models feature Auto Shutter and Auto Best Shot, whereby the camera analyses the scene and shooting conditions and selects the appropriate exposure settings. The EX-Z200 also includes CCD-Shift image stabilization. The pair will be available from March 2008, the EX-Z100 priced at $279.99 and the EX-Z200 $329.99.

CES 2008: Panasonic has announced development of a wireless camera with the ability to upload directly to Google’s Picasa Web Albums. Thanks to a deal with T-Mobile, the camera will include twelve months’ free use of the network’s HotSpot service which is available in selected Starbucks, Borders, Hyatt hotels and airports. There are currently no details on the hardware aspect nor timeframe for introduction but we shall, of course, keep you up to date with more details as we receive them.

CES 2008: Sony has unveiled its Close Proximity Wireless Transfer Technology system: "TransferJet". Essentially, this is a data transfer system which relies on close proximity – 3cm maximum – and will deliver up to 560 Mbps when two compliant devices are brought together. Aside from the obvious benefits of a standardized, no-contact means of communication between AV devices the new technology promises minimal electromagnetic interference due to the low intensity of the radio waves employed. I’ve owned an iPhone for six months and am very happy with it, but to be blunt, the two phones shouldn’t be compared directly. The iPhone is more expensive, $100-200 more than the VX10000, and isn’t available on the Verizon network. The best feature of the phone is the Verizon V-Cast mobile TV. It’s fairly expensive at $15/mo, but having eight channels of TV at your disposal is pretty sweet, and I was usually able to find something to watch between ESPN, Comedy Central and NBC News. The biggest flaw with this phone (and it’s not the only phone with this problem) is that the touch screen is more of a gimmick than an honest to goodness feature. The US Department of Transportation has announced new safety rules relating to the storage of rechargeable Lithium batteries when flying to, from and within the USA. The new restrictions, effective from January 1st 2008, dictate that loose Lithium cells may not be packed in checked baggage under any circumstances – batteries installed in equipment are unaffected. Carry-on baggage may contain up to two loose batteries but only if there is no possibility of short-circuit, containing them individually within simple plastic bags or their original packaging is sufficient to prevent this and will satisfy inspectors. Sony has announced the imminent availability of its Cyber-Shot DSC-S730, a 7.2 MP entry-level digicam with 3x optical zoom and 2.4" LCD. This particular model looks to be a europe-only release although it is entirely possible it will be launched in other markets under a different model designation. We spend a lot of our time here at TR evaluating cutting-edge hardware, but not because we’re particularly drawn to extremely expensive components. Rather, it’s the fact that new technologies tend to debut at the high end before trickling downstream to more affordable mid-range parts. We also spend a great deal of time playing with those mid-range products, combing through their ranks in search for that perfect intersection of price and performance—the glorious sweet spot.
It’s a little odd, then, to be sitting in front of Asus’ Eee PC sub-notebook. With a Celeron ULV processor chugging along at 630MHz, GMA 900 integrated graphics powering a 800×480 display, 512MB of RAM, and just 4GB of internal storage capacity, the Eee PC’s specs are hardly awe-inspiring. In fact, this may be the first system we’ve ever reviewed that’s slower than Jessica Simpson.
