Supreme Commander Forged Alliance review
YouGamers :: Sunday, December 30, 2007
“The campaign, and more importantly Forged Alliance in general, seems to be somewhat torn between trying to cater to the Supreme Commander fans and new players. The fact that it’s a standalone expansion would suggest that it is geared towards new players and veterans alike, but looking at the game itself, this is very difficult to accept. The campaign is incredibly unforgiving towards newcomers who aren’t accustomed to the gameplay mechanics. Also, the restriction of only being able to use the new faction in multiplayer battles for those not owning the original game is quite a huge handicap.”
Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)
Gaming Heaven :: Sunday, December 30, 2007
Not many game characters are as famed and popular as the mustached plumber devised deep within the bowels of the Nintendo Corporation. Thinking of it, save for perhaps Pac-Man, Mario is the de-facto mascot of gaming. From the day players got to play the incredible Super Mario Bros. the blue pantaloons and red shirt wearing half of the duo stared in countless games, ranging from kart racing to Tetris look-alikes. But while any other game character would have long worn out his welcome, Mario kept coming back to cheering ovations. Much of this was thanks to the long series of games that made him what he is today in the first place – After wreaking havoc in 2D with the Mario Bros series and causing a revolution of its own in 3D with Super Mario 64, fans have grown accustomed to nothing less than fabulous gameplay. But even Mario can lose his breath, as was shown with Super Mario Sunshine for the GameCube, a game that albeit great, just didn’t deliver that sought after magic the N64 predecessor had. Which leaves us with the question: Is Galaxy the true sequel to Mario 64, or does it continue down the Sunshine path?
Raidmax Aztec Gaming Case Review
Think Computers :: Sunday, December 30, 2007
: “Among the first PC cases I reviewed, and the first expensive one (I consider mid-towers over $150USD expensive) was the Raidmax Samurai. Though the chassis was your standard steel tool-free case, it was covered with a streamlined polystyrene shell, with a sprayed-on showcar paint job. It was Raidmax’s top of the line gaming case at the time. The shell gave it an all-out modded look, and there wasn’t any other pre-modded case on the market that came close. That was four years ago. The Samurai is still undoubtedly the most radical case I have owned, and the friend I gave it to still uses it and still gets favorable comments on it, ranging from admiration to awe. It is the last Raidmax product I had my hands on, so I am looking forward to seeing if the Aztec lives up to my expectations for a Raidmax gaming case, a well-made case that is definitely not boring. I would also hope to see some decent cooling for today’s hot CPUs and GPUs. Read on to see if it does.”
Rail Simulator review
YouGamers :: Sunday, December 30, 2007
“There’s a complete dearth of “beginner missions” or simple guides to getting started; compared to what can be in Microsoft’s Flight Simulator X, it’s embarrassingly unfriendly to the beginner and casual sim fan. Kuju, I’m almost certain, would claim otherwise, highlighting their simplified control system as proof: yes, a two button approach to handling a several hundred ton locomotive is certain basic, but how is one supposed to learn about speed limits, the points system, braking for a station and so on? The answer is that you don’t: you either know it in the first place or you’ll just have to learn it as best as you can, whilst playing the game.”
Rock Band Special Edition for Sony PS3 Review
i4u :: Sunday, December 30, 2007
“Rock Band is at its best when you have one or two other people available to form your own band. However, solo artists will also find challenging gameplay good for hours of fun. Both single player and multiplayer modes are available in the game. In multiplayer, you can have any two instruments played or with enough pals and an extra guitar controller from Guitar Hero 1 or 2 you can get a full quartet going with drums, bass, lead guitar and vocalist. I would assume if you are coordinated enough you could also play an instrument and sing allowing for the strange notion of single player play in multiplayer mode.”
Looking Ahead to 2008
YouGamers :: Sunday, December 30, 2007
“If any proof is needed to validate video games as a phenomenon of entertainment, look no further than the list of upcoming titles for 2008. The new calendar year is looming large on the horizon, and with it will come one of the most stacked release schedules ever seen on the PC. That’s right: PC gaming – for years, mere months away from certain death – is alive and well. As the capabilities of dedicated game consoles increase, game development on the PC benefits – and vice-versa. Even after paring down the list of 2008 releases by removing not-so-anticipated titles and accounting for recently announced delays, the list of anticipated games is a long one.”

SimCity Societies PC Review
Gamepyre :: Thursday, December 20, 2007
SimCity Societies is not the traditional SimCity game, but it is fun. The ability to build different style societies rocks, but overall, the game was just too simple for my taste. I got used to setting up tax rates, dealing with traffic, and making deals with other cities and building as much underground as above ground. None of those aspects are available in this game, but then again this game does not need them. SimCity Societies caters to graphics and simplicity.
Pirates of the Burning Sea hands-on preview
YouGamers :: Thursday, December 20, 2007
“One facet of PotBS that really stands out when compared to the current MMO competition is the economy system. The game very much follows the player-driven sandbox model made popular by EVE Online, where everything is player-made. While you can buy some items off NPCs, they are of inferior quality, and are generally not worth bothering with. Instead of using the character to craft different things while grinding up your “crafting skill”, you act as a “business tycoon”, and just direct the gathering and manufacturing operations.”

Spider Man Friend or Foe PC Review
Gamepyre :: Tuesday, December 18, 2007
Spiderman – Friend or Foe will make an excellent gift this holiday season. If your kids love Spiderman, then they will love this game, and love you for getting it for them. Furthermore, this game can be enjoyed by adults as well. Activision did a great job of putting this game together, but once again, let me just say that if you just don’t like Spiderman, there is nothing that Activision can do to make you enjoy this game.
SimCity Societies
Driver Heaven :: Tuesday, December 18, 2007
SimCity is a game series with a very fine lineage. For nearly two decades, the concept of micro-managment expanded and diverged into multiple Sim spin-offs. However, once Maxis and EA created The Sims series and the bazillion new expansion packs (essentially a legalized form of printing money), they seemed to abandon the whole SimCity concept ever since. I guess EA thought they could milk the golden “Sim”-goose a bit more by returning to the city building concept with SimCity Societies, but they’ve done so without Maxis on board.
The basic concept of SimCity is simple – you are the mayor, you get a piece of land and some funds, and you are given the task of building a city, while keeping your citizens happy and the population growing.

Soldier of Fortune Payback PC Review
Gamepyre :: Tuesday, December 11, 2007
As much as it pains me to do so, I have to give this game a poor score. The technology is dated, and the game turns quickly into trial and error. Crazy enemy AI and aim will get you killed too fast. Multiplayer is fun, but has nothing major to offer. Definitely nothing other games don’t have. If you are a hardcore fan of the Soldier of Fortune series, then pick this one up. Even then I’d recommend waiting a bit for the price to drop. The multiplayer alone isn’t enough to make this game great, and the single player, while long enough, is lacking. I’m also upset that the gore models, something Soldier of Fortune is known for, aren’t as good as they have been in the past.
Unreal Tournament 3 (PC)
Driver Heaven :: Tuesday, December 11, 2007
After it seemed like the UT series was about to become the next Fifa (you know, a new revision every year with hardly any new features added to the mix) with the 2003 and 2004 releases, things got quiet. It took 3 years for the next installment to be finally ready and thankfully Epic decided to drop the release year naming convention and returned to a more standard, numerical naming. But is that big III behind the Unreal Tournament name and logo all that this new version delivers, or did the upgrade to the Unreal Engine 3.0 bring more?
Unreal Tournament 3 review
YouGamers :: Tuesday, December 11, 2007
“Unreal Tournament 3 is a fine game. It plays well, looks okay and doesn’t ask anything unreasonable in the hardware side of things. Yet it tastes a bit… stale. You can’t avoid the fact that this is just another evolutionary step for the Unreal Tournament series. If you didn’t like UT before, UT3 doesn’t include anything so radially different that it would change that. There is also a distinct lack of final polish. I think Epic simply ran out of time with Christmas rapidly approaching. The fact that the Xbox 360 version was unceremoniously pushed to 2008 and the PS3 version will apparently just barely make it to the stores before the holidays tends to support this assumption.”
Empire Earth 3 (PC)
Driver Heaven :: Tuesday, December 11, 2007
Video game franchises are volatile entities. With each successive release of a popular franchise, publishers walk a fine line between pleasing existing fans and attracting new ones. Driving fresh sales with changes to gameplay can backfire terribly, as the fans that made a series a success in the first place may walk away in disgust. Yet publishers are reluctant to ditch previously successful branding, so a profitable series is likely to soldier on until its final iteration resembles its first release in name only. Some games have such valuable pedigrees that even the worst gameplay isn’t enough to hamper the critical reception; take the extended technology demo known as Doom 3, for instance.
Other games, however, such as Sierra’s recently released real-time strategy game Empire Earth 3, can’t survive on branding alone. 2007 has seen a number of superb releases in the real-time strategy genre, and the Empire Earth name alone isn’t enough to carry the third game in the series if the gameplay isn’t up to par. Given the generally excellent reception of the series’ previous release, continued success for the series is no easy task – and by no means guaranteed.

HL2: Empires mod review
SteamFriends :: Tuesday, December 04, 2007
Empires is a revolutionary mod for Half-Life 2. It combines the genres of first-person shooter and real-time strategy. It’s release was yesterday the 30th of November, and while the rest of the Empires community was waiting in anticipation for that countdown to reach zero, Steamfriends had been invited for a testplay. So what do we think?
FEAR Perseus Mandate review
YouGamers :: Tuesday, December 04, 2007
“Plot-wise the game is paper thin: there isn’t even a convoluted storyline that you can take masochistic pleasure in unraveling and dissecting all its folds and flaws – it’s all just fancy sounding words like Perseus and Synchronicity strung together to make you think there’s some grand scheme or mystery behind all the gunplay. There isn’t, just one cliché after another. There’s an Evil Corporation conducting Bad Experiments and producing Paranormal Phenomena. Don’t expect to have any better idea of what’s really going on by the end of the game. Of course, ghosts and mecha make appearances in the game, but that’s to be expected, right?”
Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground Xbox 360 Review
Gamepyre :: Tuesday, December 04, 2007
All in all, Tony Hawk Proving Ground is just an average game. I’ve always been a fan of the series, but this one just doesn’t deliver like some of the older titles do. Sure they added a lot of new stuff, but not all of it was implemented well. You can place ramps and such throughout the streets now, but the editor they give you is extremely twitchy. They seem to have polished ideas that were added in Project 8, hopefully by the next in the series they’ll get the new additions worked out. Problems aside this is a pretty fun game, just don’t expect anything groundbreaking.
Mario and Sonic At The Olympic Games (Wii)
Driver Heaven :: Monday, December 03, 2007
We’ve seen plenty of mini-game conglomerates on the Wii ranging from creative titles like WarioWare: Smooth Moves to the more gimmicky releases like Wii Play. Instead of focusing on depth, these games all advertise a pick-up-and-play value that should be appealing to gamers of all skill levels. While Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games hoped to set the standard for what a mini-game title should be like, once you get past the gratuitous arm-flailing events there isn’t a whole lot to get excited about.

Company Of Heroes Opposing Fronts (PC Expansion)
Driver Heaven :: Monday, December 03, 2007
Ah, the expansion pack. Time was, you would rush out to your local game emporium to pick up an extra chunk of your favourite game, only to find you’d bought a couple of poorly-executed extra missions and a single new character/weapon/background texture. Thankfully, these days we ask for a little bit more for our hard-earned cash. Relic have been excelling themselves of late, not only producing varied expansion packs for Dawn of War, but also making them stand-alone so that any gamer new to the series can get stuck in, without having to shell out for the original. So, how does Company of Heroes:Opposing Fronts (or COH:OF as I shall lazily call it) stack up?
Gamespot’s Gerstmann Fired, Allegedly Over Kane and Lynch Review
Primo Technology :: Monday, December 03, 2007
According to a fellow Gamespot contributor and close friend of Gerstmann, the editor was fired Wednesday morning because of his negative review of Kane and Lynch, which he awarded a 6.0. Publisher Eidos is heavily advertising Kane and Lynch on Gamespot this week, including interactive Flash banners.
Sega Rally (Revo) review
YouGamers :: Monday, December 03, 2007
“Those with a knack for tinkering under the hood will be disappointed with the game. The sole tweak available is a selection between “Road” and “Off-Road” tire choice. This falls in line with the handling, which is typical arcade rally fare: cars turn on a pivot, a vertical axis through the center of the vehicle. Courses are lined with invisible barriers, through which cars can’t pass. In other words, it’s impossible for even the worst of drivers to go off course, which can make for some amusing and miraculous crash recoveries (incidentally, cars are unable to get completely inverted, regardless of the severity and velocity of an impact).”
Rosewill SPORTS Kit for the Nintendo Wii Reviewed
Futurelooks :: Monday, December 03, 2007
When I first picked up the Nintendo Wii-mote I thought to myself, “Hmm, this controller would feel kinda clumsy if I had to swing a bat with both hands even though it is completely wireless.” Maybe in not so many words, but you get the point. It’s safe to say, “Never fear, Rosewill is here!”. The good folks at Rosewill have solved that very problem. They have put together a SPORTS Kit.
