Globalwin is probably most known for its high quality heatsinks, they do however make cases as well. The Globalwin YCC-8870 is made of aluminum but not the same type as Lian-Li cases are. This case is very light and somewhat thin, it is silver and ha a unique design to it. Just because it is thin and light weignt does not mean it is a inferior product by any means, maybe quite the oposite. You will see this case in much more detail later in this review, below is a table which has the specs of the case.

The Globalwin YCC-8870 case comes in a good sized box, mine came via UPS. The case is protected by a good sized peice of styrafoam on the top and bottom which will keep it protected against the abuse of shipping. As you can see allready its a cool looking case!
The front of the case is pretty cool looking, almost space age like. The power and reset buttons are both are quite large which I like, if you’re like me somtimes late at night you can hardly see the screen anymore and don’t want to shut down the right way, you just wanna push that button and colapse into bed. The front of the case has a slot for a floppy drive, the door of the case hides 2 of the 5.25″ drive bays and one of the 3.5″ bays. There is also a space for a case badge which in my opinion is a must for every case behind the door.
The top of the case is has a piece of plastic attached to it which can be removed, it is in a dome shape is is only for decorative purposes. The side of the case is just like most normal cases, it has a handhold for easy opening and looks quite cool. From the shot of the back of the case you can see that there is an 80mm exhaust fan and it comes with an I/O plate. This particular case I got did not come with a power supply but you can pay more and one can be added to it.
This case comes with 2 thumbscrews for the side panel which you most open to install and uninstall hardware. I like the fact that you do get these 2 thumbscrews it makes it a lot easier to get in and out of the case. I would have liked to have seen Globalwin provide 4 so that both sides could have them, even though you don’t much open the other side of the case, when you do the faster the better.
I opened up the side of the case with the thumbscrews on it, the side panels of this case slide off with almost no effort, and go back on just as easy. The side panels of this case are some of the best I have come across. The inside of the case was quite greasy for some reason, I am not sure what it is or why it was there but it was kind of irritating having my hands be all greasy after working in a computer. There are no sharp edges that I could find in this case which is a great quality in any case. This case comes with 2 80mm Sunon fans, you can also see all the jumpers for LEDs, switches, and the speaker. The case also comes with a PCI retention device which is what that vertical bar is, we will look at that more later. The green bars on the side of the drive cage are retention devices which hold 5.25″ and 3.5″ drives in place with no screws needed.
The 2 80mm Sunon fans that come with the case are model #KD1208PTB2-6, below is a picture and some of the specs.

One of the Sunon fans is placed in the bottom front which is for the intake of air, you can also see that the front bezel is held into place by circular clips. There are 4 clips total, 2 at the bottom and 2 at the top. Even though you do not need any tools to remove the front bezel it was somewhat difficult to remove it because the clips were cramped into the corner and hard to get to.
The hard drive cage is held into place with 3 screws, when you remove them the cage comes off very easily. The hard drive cage comes with one green slide bar which will be used to hold the floppy drice in place as the bars for the 5.25″ other drives. All you need to do is slide your drive into the bay and when you get it where you want it you slide the green plastic bar on the side toward the front and it locks into place. No screws are needed and it is really fast, these are really great.
The case does not come with traditional motherboard standoffs to mount the motherboard to the case. This case comes with a few standoff posts which you put into place and push your motherboard on to. There are 2 standoffs which you screw 2 screws into so that the motherboard stays in place. I was a little uneasy pushing down on my motherboard to get it to stay in place but it went in pretty easy. I do not like these as much as normal motherboard standoffs which you need screws for but it is a new idea.
I then installed my video card and NIC, both went in very easily. This case comes with 6 expansion slot covers which do not need screws to hold them in place, I really like the fact that you get so many and that the don’t need to be screwed in. There is also a picture of all the jumpers in place after installing the motherboard and also the intake fan connected to one of the motherboard headers.
I installed my hard drive, CDROM, and floppy drive to the case. The CDROM installed just like the floppy drive with ease, all you need to do is slide it into place and when you get it where you want it slide the green plastic bar on the side of the cage forward and it is secured into place. I put the CDROM in one of the drive bays that are hidden when the door is shut because I wanted it to be somewhat stealth looking. I installed my hard drive to the bottom of the hard drive cage so that it was mounted upside down just for no particular reason.
I then reinstalled the bar that works as the card retention device, I don’t really find that this has much of a purpose because your cards should not be falling out in the first place. It just kind of gets in the way and makes it look more cluttered, and if you have a window it will not look good. I used the green plastic holders that came with the case, slid it onto the bar and extended it so that it was putting pressure onto my video card. Here is a final shot of all my hardware installed and ready to run. Yes it’s messy but I didn’t have time to make it look nice.
Conclusion
I really like this case and I could only find a few nagative points about it. The case is really cool looking with a lot of features and is overall a really good case. The retaining mechanisms for the 5.25″ and 3.5″ bays is really great, the overall look of the case is really cool and it’s very light which would make this a nice LAN box possibly.
The edges of this case are all smooth, I did not cut myself once on this case which is a very nice things. The price of this case is also pretty good, reatil price without a power supply is $80 and $140 with a 420w power supply. If this case would have come with a removable motherboard tray, 2 more thumbscrews, and a power supply I probably would have found almost nothing negative with this case.
Overall I would give the Globalwin YCC-8870 case an 8/10 and am going to award it the OCmodshop Seal of Approval. I would like to thank Chung Bao from Globalwin USA for sending over this case for me to review.
