Nyko Lineup at CES 08

Nyko has been creating inventive and functional third-party console gadgets for years, many times improving on the original manufactuer’s design with a lower price point.  Nyko was at CES 2008 showing off some of their new (and not-so-new) products for gaming enthusiasts.

Wireless Nunchuck

This is the killer device that Nintendo fans have been salivating over since it was announced: the Wireless Nunchuk Controller Attachment for the Wii.

Do I really need to spell out why this controller accessory is so awesome?  There are no restrictive wires, allowing for complete freedom while gaming, and is completely compatible with all games that require the standard Nunchuk. (note that Nyko’s Nunchuck has an extra “C” to avoid infringing on Nintendo’s trademark).

The accessory has a receiver base which plugs directly into the back of the Wiimote, using the standard Nunchuk port.  The receiver base gets its power from the Wiimote, so the only necessary batteries are for the Nunchuck itself (two AAA batteries, which are included).  The Wireless Nunchuck has a blue power LED to let you know when it’s on, and also includes a recessed power button.  The base also includes a power button (also used to sync with the Nunchuck), which can be used to turn on the paired Nunchuck

The small standard batteries will provide up to 30 hours of gameplay, so you can replace them at the same time when you replace the batteries on the Wireless Sensor bar.

Nyko Charge Station for Nintendo Wii

The Nyko Charge Station for the Nintendo Wii is a docking station for your Wiimotes.  It allows you to charge 2 Wii Remotes at the same time, so you can charge one controller while you use the other, or let both charge overnight if you are heavy into two-player gaming.  The base unit has two blue LED charge indicator lights, so you can see when each remote control has finished charging.

Of course, the unit doesn’t work with regular AA batteries (even if they are rechargable).  Instead, you use Nyko’s NiMH batteries (two of which are included).  These nickel metal hydryde batteries will certainly last much longer than standard AA batteries anyway, and the unit even comes with two rubberized battery covers to provide extra grip on the controllers.

Nyko also sells replacement batteries and battery plate covers (the Nyko Click Grips) in five different colors: black, grey, blue, green and purple.

Wireless Sensor Bar Receiver and Stand for Nintendo Wii

The Nintendo Wii is supposed to be completely wireless, isn’t it?  Then why do we have do drape a cord all over our TV for the Wii remote sensor bar?  Well, Nyko doesn’t think we should have to, either, and have developed a wireless sensor bar receiver (and stand) to replace the awkward standard one that came with the console.  Since it’s wire-free, your home theater rack will look alot cleaner.

The new sensor bar has a blue power LED to indicate when it’s on, and it is sensitive up to 25 feet away.  And since it can be placed virtually anywhere, you can optimize it for better reception performance.  This wireless receiver will be a godsend for those with wall-mounted flat screens, so there are no ugly wires tethered to your TV.

The unit takes four AA batteries (a set of which are included in the kit), which should provide up to 30 hours of truly wireless gaming.  To help conserve batteries, the wireless receiver has a built-in audible warning system.  It reminds you when it is accidentally left on, and the alarm can be set to one or two hour intervals.

Having to turn off your sensor seems like an extra pain whenever you are gaming (and your kids probably won’t remember, either), but may be worth it to some who absolutely hate ugly wires.

Intercooler for Nintendo Wii

The Xbox 360 was the first console to get some Nyko love with their Intercooler, and the company has followed up with a Playstation 3 version, and now there’s one for the Nintendo Wii.  This clip-on cooling device reduces ambient temperature by moving hot air away from the console.

Some external Wii cooling devices have used the USB port for power, which can remain powered even if the console is turned off.  Nyko controls this by having the Intercooler draw its power from the main power cable.  The cooler clips easily to the back of the Wii, so there is no need to void your warranty, and doesn’t obstruct any ports on the backside of the console.

Nyko HD-Link for Nintendo Wii

The Wii doesn’t sport high-definition visuals like the Playstation 3 or Xbox 360, but that doesn’t mean you have to slum it with standard interlaced NTSC *blech!*.  Nyko’s HD-Link for Nintendo Wii allows your console to display a progressive image (480p) for rock-solid images and widescreen support.

The cable plugs directly into the Wii’s audio/video output port, and splits into 5 high-end gold-plated cables: Y, Bp, and Pr component connections and two RCA connections for stereo sound.  The cables are shielded, and extra long to allow for easy setup.

Classic Controller Grip

The Classic Controller for the Nintendo Wii is the black sheep of Nintendo controllers…  Nintendo has always pushed the innovation envelope when it comes to usability (the pretty much invented D-pad gameplay), so it is puzzling when there are so many limitations of the Classic Controller, especially when it comes to ergonomics.

Nyko again comes to the rescue with their Classic Controller Detachable Grip for the Wii.  It provides a more comfortable ergonomic grip for the elengated hockey-puck, and is easily snapped on.  There is even a “sled” to store the Wiimote under the grip (since the Wiimote must be the “host” for the CC).  Now you can comfortably play your classic Nintendo games without having a counterweight dangling from your pants!

Net Connect USB Network Adapter

The Nintendo Wii is a marvel of wireless design, and is the only next-generation console to come with an integrated wireless network adapter.  For those of you without a wireless router and still want to connect your Wii to the ‘net, then Nyko wants you to try their Net Connect USB Network Adapter.

This little device plugs into one of the Wii’s USB ports and creates a high-speed wired LAN connection for your console.  Since it is completely wired (using a Cat5 cable), it provides more security than a wireless connection, and configuration is much simpler.  The device uses USB 2.0 (up to 30 Mbit / second) so technically it is faster than WiFi.  Unless you have a T1 or fiber going to your house then you’ll never saturate the WiFi connection, but I digress…

 

This device is compatible with the Wii Opera browser, Wii Connect 24, Wii Parade, online play and many other online features of the Wii.

It really perplexes me that this device is even available to the public.  For about the same cost you can get a wireless router to connect your Wii to the Internet.

Nyko PerfectShot Ergonomic Pistol Grip (read our review here)

OCmodshop reviewed this very item just a few weeks ago, and it offers many advantages over Nintendo’s Wii Zapper grip.

Nyko’s implementation allows for traditional one handed pistol-like operation, and the tactile trigger adtivates the Wiimote’s “B” button.  An aiming sight “increases accuracy” according to Nyko, but there is no complete sightpicture, and (because of the Wiimote’s technology) the Wiimote doesn’t work like a lightgun.

The grip has an accessory pass-through so you can still attach a Classic Controller, Nunchuk (or new Wireless Nunchuck) to the bottom of the gun.  Since the pistol only requires one hand, then the other can be used to hold the Nunchuk.

Frontman Wireless Guitar Controller for Wii

The Wii’s implementation of Guitar Hero III is alot different than other consoles.  For one, the “screw up” sounds can be heard from the Wiimote’s internal speaker, giving you a more realistic experience.  Nyko is upping the guitar experience with their Frontman Wireless Guitar controller.

The Wiimote is nestled inside the grip’s cavity, which provides the power and wireless connectivity for the guitar controller.  The guitar controller provides an accurate and responsive whammy bar, and bi-directional strum bar.  The controller comes with 3 interchangable pick guards in designer colors and customizing stickers.

The five fret buttons match the wood-tone of the stock, and looks much more attractive than other “cartoony” controllers, but still looks like a ukelele because of its miniature size.  The guitar is based on other popular guitar designs, but is not a “replica” of a Fender Stratocaster or Gibson Les Paul (like the “official” controllers), but you will likely pay less for this controller because Nyko isn’t paying any licensing fees.

Charge Base for Xbox 360

Not to be outdone by their original Charge Station, Nyko introduces a Charge base that not only charges your batteries, but gives you a place to neatly store two of your wireless controllers.

The unit comes with two special batteries (with charging contacts on the external side) that allows you to drop-in your controllers into the base for charging.  Nyko’s batteries will provide you with about 25 hours of place time, and the base completely charges a drained battery in about two hours.  The base also has dual-color LEDs to indicate the charging status of each controller (red = charging, green = charged).

Intercooler EX (and EX black) for Xbox 360

Ah, the good ol’ Xbox 360 Intercooler…  When Nyko says this device is “high-efficiency” they aren’t kidding around, because the Intercooler sounds like a jet engine taking off.  There are several features of the Intercooler that work great, and have been implemented into its siblings.  New this year is the Intercooler’s black brother, so it matches the looks of the updated Xbox 360 Elite.

The unit is powered by the Xbox 360 console itself instead of USB ports, so the fans turn on when the console is powered up and no AC adapter is needed.  A new locking mechanism provides a safe and secure connection to your console’s exhaust, which increases airflow which in theory reduces heat buildup inside the console.

The unit doesn’t interfere with the optional Wi-Fi adapter, and works in either the horizontal or vertical position.

Charge Station (and charge station black)

Nyko has always been good at offering better products at lower pricepoints than the original manufacturers, and the ChargeStation for Xbox 360 Controllers is no exception.  There are two flavors available (white or black) to match your original Xbox 360 or 360 Elite.  The base has LEDs that change color to indicate each battery’s individual status (charging or charged).

The Dual Port Rapid Battery Charger includes 2 NiMH battery packs that work in Xbox 360 controller, which fit nicely in the base.  The base can quickly charge the two included battery packs in about two hours (and will charge Microsoft batteries, too).  Each battery pack provides about 25 hours of play, similar to OEM batteries.

High Quality Guitar Strap

Well, it’s a guitar strap to replace the itchy straps that come with your Xbox 360’s guitar controllers.  I’m sure Nyko would prefer that you use one of their FrontMan controllers, but this strap will work on any of the other first-party “official” controllers, and the straps come in nifty colors.  Now if they had a service that allowed you to create your own straps, then we’d be in business!

Zero Wireless Performance Controller & Power Kit

Nyko is no stranger when it comes to creating great third-party console peripherals, and it isn’t hard to improve upon Sony’s Sixaxis controller.  Nyko has introduced their Zero Wireless controller for the PS3 which offers several advantages over the original gamepad.

The multi-axis technology has true 6 axis response and is fully compatible with all PS3 titles, supporting full vibration feedback on all supported titles.  Unfortunately the controller doesn’t seem to work natively with the PS3, as a USB receiver must be plugged in for the controller to function.

The unique metal polymer resin allows for a comfortable grip while looking very sleek, and is available in several different color combinations.  The analog sticks are surrounded by LED lights, and the main buttons are backlit.

One of the biggest advantages this controller has over the OEM pad is the fact that YOU CAN REPLACE THE BATTERIES!  The kit comes with a rechargable NiMH battery, which provides up to 25 hours of play time, but also includes a AA battery pack to continue wireless play when the batteries run low.  There is even an LED charge indicator light.

ChargeLink Wireless Controller USB Charging Cable

One of the big problems with the Playstation 3 controller is that you can’t hot-swap the battery, meaning that you either have dead time or must be tethered to your console via a very short recharging cable.

Nyko delivers an alternative solution via a longer USB cable, which simultaneously charges the PS3 wireless controller while you play.  The cable is 10 feet long and is completely sleeved in black woven fabric, drastically improving its durability.  Since the cable uses a standard mini USB plug, it can be used with various standard Mini USB devices like the PSP or digital cameras.

The cable also features a Velcro wrap allowing it to be neatly bundled up and thrown into an accessory bag.

Intercooler for Playstation 3 (read our review here)

The Playstation 3 version of Nyko’s Intercooler console coolers has an improved design over the original Xbox 360 Intercooler, providing more airflow into more orafices.  Like other Intercoolers, its Clip-on design will not void your warranty and adds additional airflow which in theory lowers the internal temperature of the console.

The PS3 Intercooler has 5 powerful fans to help reduce ambient air temperature by extracting hot air from the console, and implements a rheostat to control the speed of the fans, thereby reducing noise.  Like its siblings, this Intercooler has a power pass through design which require no addition AC adapters or USB ports, and conveniently relocates the main power switch to the front of the console.

Dual Charger AC

As mentioned earlier, one of the big problems with the PS3 controllers is that you have to be tethered to the main console when your batteries run low.  What if you could plug up your wireless controllers and charge them from a much closer outlet?

Nyko’s Dual Charger AC has a patented AC adapter design that allows you to charge two wireless PS3 controller simultaneously from a standard wall outlet.  It includes the AC adapter block itself and two 4-foot USB cables.  The AC power block comes with collapsible prongs for easy storage, and you can even charge other mini USB-powered devices, like an MP3 player.

This product might actually be worth something if you could charge your PS3 controllers while playing.  It is uncertain if the PS3’s wireless still functions while charging, and we were unable to test this unit, so it is unclear how well this product functions.

BluWave Infrared Remote for Playstation 3

A point in favor of purchasing a PS3 is the fact that it is one of the cheapest BluRay players out there.  For those of you who extensively use your console for next-generation high-definition movies, then you might want to use a real remote control to legitimize the device has Home Theater equipment.

Nyko has introduced their BluWave infrared remote which controls playback of Blu-Ray movies, DVDs and CDs.  The remote is completely IR, so it requires that a special IR receiver be plugged into a USB port, and of course line-of-sight is important in the receiver’s placement.  The remote can control the console up to 25 feet away, and has buttons for all PS3 controller functions (LT, RT, circle, square, etc).  The remote also has basic media navigation (play/pause, skip

Charge Base 2 for Playstation 3

This is a charging dock for 2 PS3 controllers, which offers several functions in one device.  For one, it rapidly charges two PS3 controllers at the same time, and is a nifty place to store your controllers.

The unit is kind of odd looking, as there are special USB adapters you must use to mount the controller to the base.  The base itself can be plugged into any wall oulet, so no USB port is required

Nintendo DS Ultimate Kit

Nyko has some stylish DS accessories, and now you can buy a coordinated set all at once!  With the Ultimate Kit you can get a protective case for your DS lite, color coordinated Car Charger, two matching slyli for use on the touch screen, a bag clip (so you look like a freakin’ mountain climber).

The case carries the DS lite, 2 Styli and up to 8 DS games, and come in several different popular color schemes, but it looks like the cammo kit was clearly the most popular.  If only the kit came with skins to make your DS match…

PSP TV Link

If you’re a PSP owner, then the natural thing to do is hook it up to a big-screen HDTV.  Well, now you can plug up your PSP to your big-ass 60″ TV and see just how bad sub-NTSC quality can be when it’s blown up to 3 times the size of life!

Nyko’s TV Link is a high definition component cable that allows you to display games, UMD movies, videos and photos on your TV through your PSP.  The  cables are shielded to reduce interferance, and their 10-foot length should allow you to sit at a reasonable distance from the screen while playing or watching movies.

PSP Charger Grip

Despite its lack of quality game titles, the Sony PSP is a nifty little gadget with robust gaming potential and beautiful screen.  Many PSP fans like it because it feels more like a gamepad.  Now Nyko introduces a grip that not only allows you to play longer, but makes the device more comfortable to hold, emulating the feel of popular console controllers.

The PSP Charger Grip has a built-in Lition-ion battery, which adds “up to 1.5x more playtime”.  It’s hard to judge exactly how long the batteries will last, as it depends on your usage (if you have WiFi enabled, if you’re playing a game or watching a movie, etc).

The grip makes the PSP more ergonomic, and is easy to clip on and remove, and you can use your existing PSP AC adapter to charge both the PSP and the grip’s battery at the same time.  We didn’t get a chance to play with it, so it’s uncertain if this add-on makes changing media difficult, but knowing Nyko then they’ve taken this into account to deliver a highly usable product.
