Obscure: The Aftermath takes place just a few years after the events of the first game. The characters have all gone to college and are trying to move on with their lives. One of the college professors has a brother dying from a strange disease, and in order to cure him, is secretly administering the drug to some of the students.An experiment gone out of control contaminates the students and campus, leading to some disastrous consequences….
Continuing with the same tag-team approach that worked in the first game, your team of two will switch off to carry out tasks and battle monsters. Different characters have different strengths, so figuring out the strengths and weaknesses of each of your team mates is paramount to learning the dark secret surrounding the school. Generally each team consists of a girl and boy (dating and making innuendo comments, naturally), so it’s easy to figure out who should move the heavy box and who should seduce monsters….no duh.

Obscure II is the sequel to the acclaimed survival horror game Obscure.
Two years ago, at Leafmore High, a group of young teenagers were trapped inside their school and hunted by monsters that had been released by the maniac headmaster. Some of them survived that terrible night, while others perished. Now, the survivors have picked up their lives and joined college.
But all is not right on Fallcreek University; strange black flowers have suddenly sprung up everywhere on the campus. While experimenting with these flowers in class, a dangerous substance is discovered that induces strange but vivid dreams.
But a handful of students find out that there is more to the flowers than anyone could have expected; when the seeds finally germinate, a bad trip suddenly turns into a horrible reality…

Unfortunately, the characters in the game are so 90’s teenage horror film. Take every stereotype out of the book, and at least one of the characters in the game fills the role. You have the nerd/ninja, hot asian chick with the hacking skills, dumb strong jock, and hot wet-t-shirt-contest-winning blond to begin with.
The control scheme that Obscure uses for the Wii is innovative, but it is crap. The weapons menu is hard to access, and the camera is controlled by movement of the Wiimote. The nunchuk controls your character, and swinging the nunchuk makes your character swing their weapon. I feel that this set up is backwards and hard to control, and almost wish that the camera was automatic.
The camera scheme makes it easy to look at objects, but it gets caught in the corner, especially when my nose itches…I think that the controls are much better suited to a PS2 controller or mouse and keyboard.
Control problems aside, this is a great game. The graphics are great, especially for the Wii. For the PC they might not be top-notch, but for live-action Wii animation, this is damn good. I might mention that I *hate* survival horror games, mostly because I can’t stand the gore.
This game made my neck hair prickle with all of the half-eaten people, sound effects, and disembodied parts. This game also has voice acting. I feel that this is a huge deal for the Wii and PS2, considering most games still don’t have frickin’ voice acting. AND the voice acting isn’t even lame! Plus the music in the game is orchestrated, with some pseudo-punk inserts as well. The beginning cinematic (for better or for worse) literally looks and sounds like a 90’s horror film. I was impressed.
There are some other issues besides the camera, unfortunately. One is that sometimes the level design and visibility is so poor it is hard to see where to go to finish an objective. Another is that save points are few and far between, and when they are present, they are in the form of the deadly flowers that you’re supposed to avoid. It took me a lot of dying to figure out I should touch the flowers next time….
Lastly, I love all of the detail that is in the game. Many of the objects can be examined, and all of them are remarkably “college”. If you spend any time in the dorms, you’ll read tons of posters on the wall and do many things that will bring you back to those nostalgic dorm days. Plus, you can do drugs and get some action. Nice.
There is an element of multiplayer available; at any given time another player can pick up a set of controllers and join in on the action as your teammate. The only issue with the multiplayer is that sometimes you run out of screen space, so both characters have to be in the same general area to keep exploring. If you can get past the annoying camera and are a survival horror god that doesn’t need save points, this is a great game for you.
Generally, I think this game is at least worth a rental since the survival horror games are few and far between for the Wii. For PS2 and PC players, you can do much better.
