OCZ sent over their two newest heatsinks and this is the first that I am reviewing. This heatsink is the Gladiator II which is the predecessor to the original Gladiator which was a great heatsink. I never reviewed the first one but I used it for a long time on many of my system and have two of them cooling the OCmodshop server. This heatsink is made of a single piece of pure copper meaning it isn’t soldered anywhere and has the following dimensions 62x70x44mm.
The Gladiator 2 comes in a pretty plain box with basically just what it is, but that’s ok. I opened up the box and it wasn’t protected by anything which is bad however it wasn’t damaged at all. I actually received six of these heatsinks because I will be giving away five after this review and none of them are damaged. So basically it doesn’t really matter that they are not wrapped in anything because they were alright.
From the side of the heatsink you can see that there are lots of thin fins which use textured fin technology. The basic idea behind the new technology is that because the fins have a rougher texture to them they will dissipate heat better than if it was just smooth. I cant really say that there is any noticeable difference to this new technology and there is really no way to test it unless I had the same heatsink without the textured fins. I took off the fan and you can see down below it are all the fins which should hopefully cool the CPU well.
The heatsink comes in the box and is on top of a brow piece of paper which is there to protect the base from getting damaged. The base of the heatsink didn’t have any major scratches or anything but the finish on it wasn’t really good. I took the picture with a black fan screw next to the base to show the reflection, as you can see it isn’t very good. The clip on this heatsink doesn’t look as good as that of the old Gladiator. The old Gladiator used only one tab per side and didn’t need a screwdriver like this one does. The old Gladiator has the best clip that I have ever used with a heatsink, I will have to see later how this new clip does.
The fan that comes with this heatsink is a Young Lin Tech 60×25 with the following specs: 7000RPM, 68-70 dBa, 39.5CFM, and has a 3-pin connector. The fan is a high speed one and is obviously going to be quite loud which for me is a big downside to any heatsink. The Gladiator 2 comes with generic thermal compound which is much better than a thermal pad so I am pretty pleased about that.
I went ahead and installed this heatsink to my normal testbed and I am glad to say that this clip is very good. This clip is not as good as the original Gladiator because it requires a screwdriver but it is better because it uses all of the tabs rather than one like the old Gladiator did. Overall I like this clip a lot and had no problems or bad feeling about my screwdriver slipping off and damaging my motherboard during installation.
I will be using an EPoX 8K9A2+ with my Athlon XP 1800+ (1.53GHz) and will be using Motherboard Monitor to get the temperature readings of the CPU. This was done by setting motherboard monitor to “Winbond Diode 2” which will read the on-die thermal diode of the XP. I will be using Arctic Silver 3 as the thermal compound because it is the best on the market. Idle temperatures were taken while idling in the BIOS and the load temperatures were achieved by using Prime95 which put the CPU up to 100% load.

After installing the heatsink I booted up my computer and went into the BIOS right away to get the idle temperature. I can say that this fan is quite loud just like that of a Delta. After idling in the BIOS for about 20 minutes I got a idle temperature of 34 degrees Celsius. I then booted into Windows and ran Prime95 for about 15 minutes. After getting the CPU to load it came to be 39 degrees Celsius which is a really nice temperature. The heatsink did a really good job cooling my CPU but it was very loud which I didn’t like.
Conclusion
I am pretty pleased with this heatsink because it did a good job cooling my CPU and was really easy to install. The one thing I really didnt like about this heatsink nor any other for that matter is that it was too loud. This could be easily fixed by changing the fan however the stock one is loud. Also the base of the heatsink could have been finished better so that it had a nicer shine to it. Even though a better finish on the base may not have dropped the temperatures at all it would have been nice to see. I know this wasnt a very long review but there really isn’t much more to say. Overall I am pretty pleased with this product and am giving it a 7/10. I would like to thank OCZ for sending me this heatsink.
