OCZ Goliath Heatsink Review

PC-PitStop has sent over another OCZ heatsink. The OCZ Goliath is the subject for this review, this heatsink is somewhat like the OCZ Gladiator in design. The base of the OCZ Goliath is pure copper with microfins, like its predecessor the Gladiator. The fins on the Goliath compared to the Gladiator are longer and a little thicker. Lets take a closer look at the OCZ Goliath.

The OCZ Goliath comes in a plain white box, nothing special. You get the heatsink, fan, a grill and some thermal compound which is nice to see.

The base of the OCZ Goliath is protected with a piece of paper which covers where the core will be on the Goliath. I like how they have protected the spot on the heatsink which will be in contact with the core. Not only is the base of the heatsink protected, it is very well finished. There were only a few very minor marks on the base, none of which will hinder performance.

The base of the OCZ Goliath has 37 fins which are about 1 inch in height and has a blue shroud around them. The clip of the OCZ Goliath is really nice by looking at it, no tools are required to install it and it uses all 6 tabs on the socket to hold it on there tight.

The fan that is included with the OCZ Gladiator is a Delta FFB0612SHE this thing is really loud. You should not plug this fan directly into a motherboard header because it pulls too much power, here are the specs.

The 37 fins are shrouded like I mentioned before, with what looks like anodized blue aluminum.

Test Bed

I installed the OCZ Goliath to my test bed, installation was a snap, no tools and no struggle. It also clears the capacitors around the socket easily. It was a little hard to remove the heatsinnk but not really. I used my 3-4 pin adapter with this fan because it draws too much power from the motherboard header. If you do not have one you will need to purchase one because it is not included.

Like always I will be using Artic Silver 3 for testing, I will also be using an external Compunurse thermal probe for the temperature readings. I took a picture of how exactly the probe is installed on the CPU.

I let the computer boot up and idle for about 20 minutes, and took the readings from the probe. I then used Prime95 to torture test the CPU and bring it to load. This heatsink performs really well at default voltage and speed, I am very impressed.

I overclocked the 1.2Ghz Thunderbird to 1.4Ghz (9×156) with a Vcore of 1.85v. I let the CPU cool down for about 30 minutes after testing it at default speeds. After it had cooled down I retested in the same fashion as I did with the default speed. Again this heatsink performs quite well, keeping the load temps under 49 which is pretty good.

Conclusion

This heatsink is quite impressive, the packaging and overall look of it is great. The base has a very good finish and is protected from scratches. The clip does not require any tools and uses all 6 tabs. The performance that it produces is very good. and it’s a bargain at only $24 which includes the heatsink, fan, grill, and thermal compound.

The only downside to this heatsink is the fan, it is extremely loud. If you are looking for a great heatsink and don’t mind listing to a very loud fan this would be a good one for you. It will keep that CPU cool even while overclocking.
