Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 X2 Review

OH. MY. GOD.  That was my initial reaction when looking upon the new Sapphire HD 4850 X2 video card.

nVidia and ATI are constantly feuding.  These bitter PR battles have resulted in a new more powerful video cards every six months or so.  This is both good news and bad news for PC gaming enthusiasts.  On one hand, prices are kept in check because of the fierce competition.  On the other hand, performance increases so frequently that your shiny new card is obsoleted very quickly.

As soon as one manufacturer releases the new King of Performance, then the other regroups and develops a product to dethrone its competition.  ATI was not sittting idly by during the latest generation of video products.  nVidia’s GeForce GTX 280 video card is one of the top performing (and most expensive) video cards, so ATI unleashed their 4870 X2 card to defeat it.

In reaction, nVidia lowered the prices of the GTX 280… but ATI was ready for this move, and revealed it’s new Power Player: the ATI HD 4850 X2

The Sapphire HD 4850 X2 not only is a direct threat to nVidia’s flagship product, but it aims to completely dominate this generation with its easy-to-swallow price point.  PC enthusiasts don’t have to purchase a special SLI motherboard to enjoy the benefits of Crossfire or SLI.  They can slap in a single video card with two GPUs onboard (and a special bridge chip) to gain the same benefits.  Those with multiple 16x PCIe slots can even quadruple their pleasure and have four GPUs running at the same time!

Designed by SAPPHIRE, the new HD 4850 X2 comprises two complete HD 4850 graphics systems on a single PCI-Express card connected by an on-board PCI Express Gen 2 bridge chip. Each GPU has 800 stream process units and a 256-bit memory interface driving 1GB of GDDR3 memory, making a total of 2GB on-board memory. Four Dual Link DVI outputs are provided as well as TV-Out. This provides a choice of Multi-monitor operation or CrossFire mode in which 3D applications such as games use both on-board GPU’s together to deliver a single accelerated output on the Primary display. In this mode the SAPPHIRE HD 4850 X2 delivers industry leading levels of performance and achieves previously unavailable frame rates in games even at high resolutions with features enabled.

The SAPPHIRE HD 4850 X2 is implemented on a single ATX format PCI-Express card, with a dual fan assisted cooler making it a standard dual-slot configuration. The box is pretty standard, although rather long for a video card box.  Opening the box reveals that the card is lovingly caressed in cut grey foam.  When you pull out the card you can see just how long it is, which is full length and is longer than even the largest motherboard.  Below the grey foam is a thin cardboard box that contain all the accessories.  Included is a DVI to HDMI adapter, DVI to VGA adapter, HDTV component cable, two power adapters, driver CD, Ruby Rom (extras) CD, and a quick install guide.

The card itself is a thing of beauty.  The board is colored blue, and the heatsinks are covered with an anodized aluminum plate, which adorns the Sapphire and 4870 X2 logos.  The plate has a hole in the top which allows hot air to escape, in addition to the natural exhaust properties of the left and right.  Two thin 80mm fans are exposed through the metal plate, which blow air on two aluminum heatsinks.  Two PCIe power inputs appear at the end of the card (one 8-pin and one 6-pin).  I’m not sure why these power inputs are mixed, and will surely cause frustration for some users depending on their power supply.  Because the card is so large, the power connectors are also tilted at a 90 degree angle.  Otherwise users may not be able to squeeze the power cables between the card and their case.

The rear of the card has four DVI adapters and one S-Video/component jack.  Many cards have an exhaust vent so the heatsink can blow hot air directly outside the case, but since the extra DVI connectors take up this room, heated air is recycled in the case and must be removed through the case’s normal exhaust methods.  Normally this isn’t a big deal, as I’ve only measured a 4 degree increase in case temperature when heat from a video card is introduced back into the case.

The card only has one Crossfire connector, so you can connect another ATI 4xxx video card.  You can upgrade your system to four GPUs if you slap in another 4850 X2, but you can also use a 4870 or 4850 for 3GPU support.  Really any card from the 48xx line will work in CrossfireX, but you’ll get better results using an identical card.

The power mosfets have two heatsinks on them (one on the top and another on the back of the card) to help expel heat generated from the 6-phase conditioning of the PCIe power connectors.  All capacitors are solid-state and the board also has power detection and overheat protection to help prevent accidental damage.

Removing the heatsink is rather easy.  The heatsinks and fans are secured by eight spring-loaded screws on the rear of the board (four around each GPU).  Once these are removed, the aluminum plate can be pulled off, which reveals the card underneath.  After swabbing off the silver thermal compount, two 4850 chips are easily identified, and a bridge chip sits between them, which is what provides your computer with Crossfire capability.

The heatsinks have a copper core (which are lapped completely smooth), and aluminum fins.  The two heatsinks are shaped to make room for the bridge chip, which is positioned 45-degrees from the GPUs to appear like a diamond.  This configuration may make it more difficult to find third-party heatsinks that will fit properly.  My first choice would be a pair of Zalman Fatal1ty FC-ZV9 coolers (reviewed here).

Each GPU is surrounded by 1GB of GDDR3 memory (for a total of 2GB on the card).  The memory chips are 1.0ns GDDR3 with 2.256-bit memory interface running at 993Mhz.  The memory chips have an L-shaped aluminum plate with thermal tape to help dissipate the heat.  The GPU heatsinks are positioned on top of these plates, and the airflow from the fans also blow across the memory plates.

Since the HD 4850 X2 is such a large beast, it can take a little finagling to get the card mounted.  Because the card is full length (probably longer than your motherboard), special considerations had to be taken into account in the board’s design.  Namely, the PCI-e power inputs.

Normally these plugs appear on the far end of the card, facing parallel to the board.  To make sure there is enough room for your cables, the PCIe power connectors have been flipped 90 degrees, so they are perpendicular to the board surface.  This means that instead of your power cables extending from the side of the card, they will connect either above or below (depending on where your computer’s power supply is located).

The board also features two different types of power connectors: one 8-pin PCIe and one 6-pin PCIe.  Many newer power supplies are starting to come with 8-pin cables, but this may confuse and confound the user at first.  A 4-pin molex power adapter is included just in case your PSU doesn’t have the necessary connections, however.

Once the power connections are hooked up, we installed our new dual-GPU video card.  The card takes up two slots, so be sure to remove both slot covers.  Once the card is seated in a single 16x PCI-e slot, it can be secured with two case screws.

We turned on our PC, and the computer POSTed.  We booted into Windows Vista 64-bit, and were greeted with a default 800×600 resolution.  We previously had Catalyst 8.10 drivers installed, but these drivers could not recognize the new HD 4850 X2.  We installed the driver from the included CD, which has a pre-release version of Catalyst 8.53.  Once the new Catalyst drivers were installed, the system rebooted and everything worked just fine.

We now had an extra option that wasn’t present when testing other ATI cards: the Crossfire option.  A single checkbox allows Crossfire to be enabled or disabled.  Normally you can keep this enabled all the time, but there are a few times when you may need to switch to a single GPU.  For one, some games do not play well with Crossfire (or nVidia’s SLI for that matter), and you may get better performance with CF disabled.

The HD 4850 X2 has a whopping 4 DVI ports, which allows you to have an extreme desktop.  Unfortunately, you cannot drive all four monitors with Crossfire enabled.  If you have a multi-monitor setup, then you may have to toggle back and forth between Crossfire when playing games.  The average PC enthusiast has only one computer which they use to play games as well as office tasks.  If you have a dedicated gaming or Home Theater PC then you won’t have to bother with switching Crossfire around.

For the most part, everything works very smoothly.  Usually any bleeding-edge technology comes with a few caveats, but we didn’t have to jump through any hoops or pray to the technology gods to make this card work.  Everything was rock-solid stable and just worked.

ATI is working on new drivers to address these issues.  Not only is multi-monitor support better (dual monitor support behaves much better), but hardware physics support (via the Havok engine) and is promised in newer driver releases.  ATI also works with game developers to release patches for better Crossfire support.

We used several video benchmarking programs to test how the HD 4850 X2 performs.  We used 3dMark 2006 and 3dMark Vantage to test the card’s synthetic performance.  FRAPS was used to benchmark “real-world” frames-per-second in a variety of popular PC games.  Our test setup consists of:

Power Consumption

The power consumption of all of our video cards were measured using Zalman’s ZM-MFC2 Multi Fan Controller (reviewed here).  We tested the cards at full idle and then under load (by letting 3dMark Vantage run).  It took several seconds before each card hit its peak, which we then recorded as a final measurement.  We discounted any measurement that didn’t last for more than a second, but most of the time the wattage went up and down like a bell curve as the graphics load increased and decreased accordingly.

It is interesting to note that the GeForce GTX card is more power efficient when idle, but not by much.  At full load, the GTX uses up as much power as the 4850 X2, and far more than the 4870 Toxic.

3dmark Vantage

3dMark Vantage goes beyond your normal video benchmark.  It focuses on the two areas that really matter in a gaming PC seperately, namely the CPU and GPU.  In previous benchmarks you got an overall score that could leave some questions up in the air as to how powerful your system really is.  For example, our current test machine uses a relatively old Intel E6600 processor, and thus the overall score could make the video card appear not as powerful as it truly is.  Now there are seperate scores for both the graphics processor and main processor.

3dMark Vantage has two GPU tests, each having a different emphasis on rendering.  CPU tests are covered by performing a physics simulation and AI simulation

Far Cry 2 Benchmarks

Far Cry 2 uses a different engine than Far Cry and Crysis, namely because the engine was developed by Ubisoft rather than Crytek.  There are not as many dynamic features of Crytek’s previous game (like real-time motion blur).  The game is still gorgeous, and the engine supports a new dynamic gameplay element featuring fire.

Regardless of the engint, it appears that the developers haven’t gotten the memo about Crossfire and SLI.  Far Cry 2 can be demanding, but currently the highest FPS number come from non-SLI setups.  All of the cards in our lineup can play Far Cry 2 very well, but just don’t deliver the number we expect from a multi-GPU card.

We did some more testing with other popular PC video games.  Here are the results, along with our comments about the game and test.   Wherever possible, we watched a timedemo and noted the minimum, average, and high FPS (frames per second).  A particular high or dip was not counted unless it lingered for more than an instant.  Therefore, a ridiculously high frame rate when there are no enemies on the screen or complex scenery was not included.  We are looking for numbers that translate into real-world gameplay.

Lego Batman 1900×1200

Lego Batman may not sound like a game that has high graphics expectations, but the complexity of these games has grown with Lego Indiana Jones, and again with Lego Batman.  The same engine may be in use, but the developers have added more complex lighting and transparency effects.  We included Lego Batman to demonstrate how the cards scale with different resolutions with and without in-game anti-aliasing.  It is good to see that you can run the game at extremely high resolutions with full Edge anti-aliasing and still have very playable framerates.

Codemasters Race Driver Grid

Codemaster’s Grid is probably one of the best-looking racing games today.  Everything looks very realistic, from the cars, to the scenery and the crowds.  The engine is demanding, but not impossibly finicky like Crysis.  We tested this game with in-game 2X anti-aliasing, and achieved very playable framerates, even at extremely high 1900×1200 resolution

Call of Duty 4 Benchmarks

Call of Duty 4’s engine is probably the best example of what a Crossfire or SLI setup can do for you.  The engine is very responsive to multi-GPUs and multi-core CPUs.  The numbers show how the framerate’s skyrocket linearly as you stack on more processing power.  If you crave high framerates in CoD, then you totally need a multi-GPU setup.

Crysis Warhead Benchmark

Crysis is THE engine that sucks as much horsepower as you can throw at it.  The engine features many advanced features like motion blur and many other features that are demanding to produce in real-time.  Currently the only way to consistently see over 30 frames per second in this game is to have the latest hardware, which translates into a computer that costs a few thousand dollars.

Crysis is a prime example of a game that doesn’t support Crossfire very well, as nVidia’s flagship card is able to stomp all over the multi-GPU Radeon.  Once a patch is released that fully supports Crossfire, then I expect to see these number change dramatically.  For now, however, if you’re buying this card solely for Crysis, then you might have to delay your enthusiasm.

Sapphire has been making some of the best ATI-based video cards for a while, and the Sapphire 4850 X2 is no exception.  The board is well constructed, and the heatsinks are better than what you expect for OEM.  Because of the layout of the board (namely the bridge chip in the center), you will be limited on the third-party heatsinks that will fit.

The board absolutely screams past competition from nVidia, but only in games that fully support Crossfire mode.  If you’re buying this card to get the best numbers on Crysis or Far Cry 2, then you’ll have to wait until the games are patched to take advantage of it.  (nVidia’s SLI doesn’t currently work in these games, either).

For the many games that do work, you’ll see a big jump in FPS that will certainly earn the envy of your friends.  You’ll have to disable Crossfire mode in some games to get slightly higher FPS, and in these cases a single-GPU video card (like the Sapphire 4870 Toxic) is faster.  If it weren’t for this incompatibility issue, then we would have awarded a full 5 points in the Performance category, which would have given this card our rare “Perfect” award badge.

The 4850 X2 should be considered by graphics professionals, too.  It is one of the few PC video products that offer 4 DVI outputs on one card.  Normally you have to order a special 4-headed video card to drive a quad-monitor desktop, and these specialty cards usually come with several caveats.  Choosing the 4850 X2 gives you quad-monitor support while still having great compatibility for games and OpenGL (like Photoshop’s CS4 suite).

The 4850 X2 card offers some of the best performance for the price ratio.  At an MSRP of $400 you get a card that can outperform nVidia’s current flagship, the GeForce GTX 280. This card is also $200 cheaper than the 4870 X2 card, and offers performance that is rather close. The Sapphire 4850 X2 has performance unheard of in its price range, and is the new sweet spot for PC gaming enthusiasts.

The thing is, I know very little of power supplies. So my question to you is: what would be the best power supply for this graphics card? I read that it has to be at least 650W, but besided that, I don't know what to look for.
