It doesn’t matter if your computer is air or water-cooled, is used as a workstation or gaming rig: air circulation is key to keeping your system running. Scythe has introduced their Kama bay to provide efficient, yet quiet airflow wherever you may need it. The most common use will be to cool hard drives in your system’s drive bay, which can be more effective than individual drive coolers.

The Kama-Bay (not to be confused with Botony Bay) is packaged in a bright package with blue-and-white pastel colors. The product description is presented in both english and Japanese. The front grill of the unit can be seen through a window in the product packaging. Inside the packaging is the unit itself, which has the fan pre-mounted, a 4-pin molex to 3-pin fan lead adapter, four optional arm extensions, and lots of mounting screws. The Scythe Kama Bay is available in three of the most common case colors: white, black, and silver.
The Kama is simply a silent 120mm fan encased in a steel painted housing and additional mounting hardware. The paint has a nice matte finish and looks very durable. The front of the unit is made of a mesh that allows 60% airflow and a filter. The Kama can be mounted horizontally (laying flat) into a single drive bay, or can be mounted vertically (standing up) to blow air directly into the case, but takes up three drive bays.
The fan is extremely quiet, rotating at 800rpm, with a noise level of 12 dBA! An average room is usually 16-18dBA, so this fan is definately quieter than the computer that hosts it. The fan still manages to push out 30 cubic feet of air per minute, which is quite impressive for a silent fan.
Installation
Installation is very simple and straightforward. If you can install a CD drive, then you can install this bay, but you must first decide the best installation method for your needs. Do you need to blow air up or down a drive bay, or do you need fresh air blowing directly into your case, possibly cooling some drives in the process?
Horizontal installation is simple: just place the Kama in the drive bay, fasten the screws to your PC’s chassis, and connect the power to the fan. You can optionally push the Kama bay in a little further so you can hide the unit behind your case’s original blank drive plates. Vertical installation is a little more involved, but should only add another minute or two to installation. The Kama comes with four optional mounting brackets and extra screws, which are used to extend the reach of the fan cage. These “arms” are screwed into the fan base, and now the arms will reach the screw holes of your drive bay. Secure the arms to the drive bay, and now a cool-looking mesh grill adorns the front of your case!
Conclusion
The Scythe Kama Bay is an easy way to increase airflow inside one’s case, and only takes a few minutes to isntall. It is really up to you if this product is useful or not… it’s kind of a niche item. If you actually need this to cool hard drives, then it is assumed that all your hard drives are mounted in 5.25″ bays, which most are not. It is very effective at introducing fresh cool air into your case, and is virtually silent. You will never know it is on!
