As you are reading this, this post is actually hosted a new server! Hopefully you won’t notice a thing except that the site is faster! If you notice any problems, please bring it to my attention! Now that the server is up, expect lots of changes very soon, and lots more content!
- 1U form factor
- 64-bit Intel Pentium 4 3.0 Ghz 800FSB LGA775 with Hyper-Threading (2MB cache)
- 2 GB interleaved DDR2-533 RAM
- 64bit PCI-X 3ware 8006-2 SATA RAID controller
- Dual Gigabit Ethernet
- 2x hot-swap Seagate Barracuda 200GB SATA (in RAID 1)
- 8x slim DVD drive
- floppy drive (whoopie!)
- Windows Server 2003
- SQL Server 2000
- Exchange 2003
The server is co-located at a datacenter in Washington. I am buying a 1/4 rack so I can house the firewall, web server and seperate SQL server. I may also host other websites on another server, too.
I will build the SQL server myself because it is a 3U case and I can use off-the-shelf parts.
I am installing a new server and was thinking that I could setup a few game servers if the readers are interested.
What dedicated game servers would you like to play, and what features should they have? Should there be a password on this server, and who would be allowed in? How could these game servers be used to promote the site?
I was thinking at least a Star Wars Battlefront 2 server, Battlefield 2 Server, and possibly a UT2004 server. How many dedicated game servers can the hardware listed below handle? I put it in RAID 1 because I might put the site’s SQL on it, but may change it to RAID 0 if just a dedicated game/file/ftp server.
The server has the following specs:
- Pentium 4 2.8Ghz 800FSB with HT
- Asus P4P800-E motherboard w/ Promise RAID controller
- 1 GB dual-channel RAM
- 2 x 80GB Western Digital HDDs (Raid 1)
- 100Mbit direct Internet connection
- 16x DVD drive
- GeForce 2 GTS video card (yippie!)
- I-star 3U case
