Is PC Gaming getting more and more boring?
Tweak News :: Thursday, August 31, 2006
“To quote something I agree with “The stagnation of the game industry is dependant on the point of view of the individual”. A good point, no game can satisfy the entire demographic just the same way as even the best movies are not enjoyed by everyone.”

Pittco 5 Lan Party Review

This time Pittco has a new location, a new power setup and a ton of prizes! Oh yeah there is gaming too so let’s check this event out!”

The Secrets of DaVinci: The Forbidden Manuscript PC Game Review
Think Gaming :: Monday, August 28, 2006
“DaVinci is quite popular lately so we expected a video game didn’t we? Well the game I have for review today is nothing like the movie at all, it actually has nothing to do with the movie. The Secrets of DaVinci: The Forbidden Manuscript is a work in collaboration with the Chateau du Clos Luce, Leonardo DaVinci’s last residence; many experts were brought in to bring an extra level of realism to the game to make sure the graphics/settings were exactly like the time of Leonardo. I have to say the game is very good graphically, and it is interesting if you are into the point and click style of games.”

ZBoard Gaming Keyboard Review
Hardware Secrets :: Monday, August 28, 2006
“The keyboard has stood by the sidelines as every other PC peripheral has undergone a variety of chances over the years. Sure, there are wireless and multimedia keyboards in the market but the basic concept has remained the same since the days of the typewriter. Ideazon has broken the mold with the Zboard, a special keyboard whose keyset can be swapped for a game-specific one. Getting ready to play Doom 3? Change the keyset on your Zboard for a specially designed one for that game and play like a pro.”

Capcom is well known for their experience in the zombie field due to their highly successful Resident Evil series, but aside from this RE is much different from their latest undead thriller known as Dead Rising. Instead of incorporating conservative stealth elements, Dead Rising is a pure action title that rewards you for killing hundreds of zombies in a variety of grotesque ways.

Bytesector :: Monday, August 28, 2006
“When it comes to gaming, I don’t think there is anyone who hasn’t played or at least heard of Lemmings. It is definitely one of those classics that never go out of style. These lovable green haired creatures with a wanton disregard for their own safety place their lives and their trust in our hands in this Team 17 remake of the game.”

Micro Machines (PC Game) review
Driver Heaven :: Monday, August 28, 2006
“One of the biggest trademarks the Micro Machine series brings is the size and scope of everything. Unlike in other toy arcade racers (like Revolt) the cars are literally tiny, being only a few centimeters long. This results in very interesting races when the race track is actually a pool table or laboratory desk for example. New to the series is the environment interactivity that MM4 brings to the table with the ability to push certain smaller objects out of the way. This makes races more dynamic as opponents can push cigarette boxes and such into your way, forcing you to slow down by either hitting the item of trying to avoid it.”

Xbox Reservoir Dogs Recalled from UK Stores
Spong :: Monday, August 28, 2006
It turns out that the Xbox version of the game has been recalled. A quick call to one of the other local game shops turned up a similar response; the Xbox version is not available. Thankfully the staff at Gamestation made it completely clear why the Xbox game is not on sale; somebody somewhere forgot to put the BBFC 18 age rating logo on the disk. The packaging carries the rating logo, but without the logo on the disc the game cannot legally be sold by UK retailers. Our man was told that the PS2 version was perfectly legal, and has been available since this morning.

Kellogg to Offer Mini Xbox Games in Cereal
Ars Technica :: Monday, August 28, 2006
Kellogg is doing a promotion where in specially marked boxes of some of their “best” cereal (Corn Pops for the win) you get a mini-Xbox game. When I first heard about this, I expected to see an Xbox disc that had an arcade game on it or the like, and was floored when I saw they were actually giving away little Tiger-style LCD games. The Motorcycle one looks like a set of handlebars, and there is even one that fits on your wrist! Man, if I were a kid these days, I would be begging my mother to take me to the grocery store right about now. As it stands, I did just call my girlfriend to ask her to pick me up some Frosted Flakes on the way home. I’m hoping for the wristband.

Titan Quest
Primo Technology :: Tuesday, August 22, 2006
Overall, Titan Quest is an enjoyable Diablo 2 clone, aside from the crashing defects. I can see playing this through several times, on difference class combinations to get a feel for each and see all the items. However, it is still lacking that something special to be able to take over Diablo 2’s place in my heart (and hard drive).

Inno3D GeForce 7300GT Review SLi
AusFX :: Tuesday, August 22, 2006
“Don’t let the 7300 name fool you, it’s nothing like the 7300GS variant. It literally smashed it clean out of the water, in many cases doubling its performance and in some cases, tripling. When paired up, two 7300GT’s make for excellent performing graphics cards, and is competitive with higher cards of today’s market. It copes very well with antialiasing and anisotropic filtering sliders at maximum setting, which reflects the fact that a lot of users are now turning to removing the ‘jaggies’ from their games to increase aesthetic appeal and even playability.”

Titan Quest—THQ
Home Theater Mag :: Sunday, August 20, 2006
This classical-age adventure calls for a hero of mythic scope. As a fit and bronzed (age) warrior, you’re ready for a journey that would leave even Hercules or Xena by the wayside. Often, action role-playing games draw inspiration from the canon of Dungeons and Dragons or Lord of the Rings, where you’re likely to face off against fantastical creatures like elves, dragons and orcs. Titan Quest instead draws its plotline from ancient Greek mythology, with an original story of legendary proportions

PREY (PC & XBOX) review
Driver Heaven :: Saturday, August 19, 2006
“For those of you that have been living under a rock for the last year, Prey follows the story of a Cherokee named Tommy who refuses to accept his heritage. After his people are abducted by alien forces, it’s up to him to save the planet from sure destruction. Unlike other shooters, Prey lets the gamer manipulate gravity, pass through portal systems, walk on walls, and even travel around in a spirit form. By combining old Cherokee mythology with an alien invasion, it’s obvious that Prey is different from every other title out there.”

HardOCP: Xbox360 Roadmap Peeked At
HardICP :: Friday, August 18, 2006
We here at HardOCP got a chance to take a gander at the tentative Xbox360 roadmap last week. Here are some of the goodies that are in store.

1. A holiday HD-DVD Xbox360 add-on that will be very inexpensive (around the $200 mark) and is rumored to only require component inputs. No HDMI in sight. This would of course point the finger to no HDCP being used on initial HD-DVD movie disks as expected. 2. For you folks that are buying the new 1080P panels that are now on the market, have no fear, as the Xbox360 looks to already support 1080P resolutions. All that will need to be changed is the connecting cable. Little more information is known on this or if there will be a gaming performance impact. 3. Xbox360 meets Media Center for next year? While the details on this product are certainly few, the concept is a project that is moving forward at Microsoft. The next Xbox360 facelift will be a product that really blurs the lines between HTPC and gaming console. While this is not a term that Microsoft used, the Xbox360 will be seeing an added on “media jukebox” for handling tons of movies, video, pictures, and music.

EA will Charge us for Watching an Xbox 360 Trailer!
Xbox 360 Fanboy :: Friday, August 18, 2006
Hey guess what? If you’re an idiot that can’t stand to wait for even a shred of Madden 07, you can grab a pay-per-view preview of the game starting August 4th. That’s right, a behind the scenes marketing video — the kind that most companies freely distribute on the Internet — will be available on your TV for a mere 20 dollars American. EA and ESPN should be reviled for this, and rightfully so. The sad thing is that this will make money for EA. There are people stupid enough to pay EA to advertise a product they were already planning on buying.

Gamefest: Xbox 360 Accessories Future Plans
Firing Squad :: Friday, August 18, 2006
At Gamefest earlier today, Microsoft held a panel on their current and upcoming plans for accessories for their Xbox 360 console. Rob Walker, the hardware unit product manager for the company, spoke to the panel and gave some very interesting tidbits and hints about their future plans (and also threw some digs at Nintendo and Sony’s controller plans). Walker began by looking back at what Microsoft has released so far, including wired and wireless controllers, the 20 GB hard drive, controller charging kits, A/V cables, TV remote controllers and more. He also touched upon current and upcoming third party accessories from companies like MadCatz, Logitech and more.

Your Mom Plays Xbox 360 Games?
Primo Technology :: Friday, August 18, 2006
“…God forbid, even your mom will be playing games here [on the Xbox 360]…” – Peter Moore’s October, 2005 Primotech Interview. Just about eight months later, we put Mr. Moore’s words to the test. But let’s back up a bit.

MS Denies 360 Price Drop
Computer and Video Games.com :: Friday, August 18, 2006
Rumours have swirled out of the Taiwanese OEM market this morning that Microsoft is planning a huge $100 price drop on the Xbox 360 this Christmas, as a direct response to the launch of Sony’s PlayStation 3.

Microsoft Taiwan has apparently moved swiftly to scotch the rumours, with spokeswoman Freda Lee saying “We do not have plans to lower the price of the Xbox 360 before the end of the year.” However, seasoned MS watchers should be taking both sides’ statements with more than a pinch of salt. On the one hand, the OEM rumours would seem to be just that – rumours – as there’s no way the Redmond giant would commit to any definitive price drop this early in the piece.

GameFest: Xbox Live Marketplace Details Revealed
Gamasutra :: Friday, August 18, 2006
Speaking at its GameFest event in Seattle, Microsoft has talked candidly about its Xbox Live service, specifically the Xbox Live Marketplace, which makes both free and premium content available for download for Xbox 360 users, and has been a notable success since launch.

Specifically, Microsoft’s Marketplace Business Manager Rohan Oommen sketched out a detailed GameFest presentation on the Marketplace, which covered what has been accomplished since the service went live in November 2005 with the launch of the Xbox 360, as well as where Microsoft envisions it heading in the months to come.

Microsoft Hints At New Controller Plans
Gamasutra :: Friday, August 18, 2006
Speaking at a panel at the Microsoft Gamefest event in Seattle, Robert Walker, the company’s hardware unit product manager, has hinted that a new iteration of the Xbox 360 controller may be created with improved functionality for first person shoot ’em-ups. As reported in detail by veteran consumer site Shacknews and also relayed by others, Walker indicated that there were still no plans to support a keyboard and mouse in future titles but that a new optional “advanced” controller may be introduced with a redesigned right analogue stick (the equivalent of a mouse in most console control systems) to allow for more precise movements. Walker made it clear that the proposed controller would not replace the current joypad, which has been almost universally praised by users.

Xbox 360 to Make Money at last in Fiscal Year 2008
PC World :: Friday, August 18, 2006
Microsoft will see profitability in its Xbox business by its 2008 fiscal year, the company said at its annual Financial Analyst Meeting Thursday.

Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft’s Entertainment & Devices Division, said that although the Xbox business will lose money for the second year in a row in fiscal 2007, which began July 1, the loss will not be as big as it was in fiscal 2006, which was a “transitional” year for the company’s game console as Microsoft readied its second-generation Xbox 360 product. Fiscal year 2008 for Microsoft begins July 1, 2007.

Next Gen Biz :: Friday, August 18, 2006

Sudoku Gridmaster for DS
Bytesector :: Friday, August 18, 2006
“Through the ravages of time it has endured. Scrawled in stone etchings, it has weathered over a thousand years of change. No, it’s not your ancient ancestor’s Cavegirl Monthly; it’s Sudoku. Rooted in mathematical theories over ten centuries old, this modern brain game has swept the world in a storm of popularity. The basics of the game usually involved a pencil and paper, but Hudson Soft and Nintendo have teamed up to improve upon the traditions of the game with the release of Sudoku Gridmaster for the Nintendo DS. ”

Running Vista Media Center on Xbox 360 – Video
Ian Dixon :: Friday, August 18, 2006
Last night I played with the extender function of Windows Vista. This is the first time I have got my Xbox 360 working as an extender with Vista. Using the latest build of Vista (5472) I setup up the Xbox 360 as an extender. The setup was very simple, it seems slicker that the XP version and maybe a little quicker. Once up and running it looks exactly like Media Center running on Vista, with the new UI and sounds.

I made a little video of Vista Media Center running on my XBOX 360, check out the new mini guide in action as well as the the new sounds:

Microsoft Re-Confirms HD-DVD Player Not for Games
Xbox-Scene :: Friday, August 18, 2006
I’m seeing lots of speculation about our upcoming HD DVD Player, and whether we have plans to publish HD DVD games. The answer is no. Since announcing the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player accessory at E3 2006, we’ve been clear that it is designed exclusively for playing HD DVD movies. It will not play games on HD DVD.

At this point, we haven’t seen anything to suggest that next-gen DVD formats offer a better game experience than current DVD. What we do know is that these formats will bring added cost to game developers, disc manufacturing, and could even result in added costs and longer load times for the consumer, which would negatively impact the game experience. We are focused on making great HD games available to consumers now, and games like “The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion” clearly show that beautiful high def graphics and huge, immersive worlds to explore are possible on the DVD9 format.

MGS chief states Xbox 360 games may require HD-DVD
XboxIC :: Friday, August 18, 2006
So yes, we still remember Microsoft executives saying “Xbox 360 gamers will never require a hard drive to play games”, only to be shocked by the Football Manager packshot stating that the game did require the HD after all. Similarly, the Xbox guys were even more adamant about that the games would never require a larger disc than the current dual layer DVD, and that HD-DVD would only ever be used for displaying HD movies through your 360. Will that turn out to be “slightly off the truth” as well?

Xbox 360 Camera To Ship With Free Game
Gamasutra :: Friday, August 18, 2006
As part of Microsoft’s Gamefest this week in Seattle, Gamasutra has obtained exclusive new details on the launch of the Xbox Live Vision video camera accessory for the Xbox 360, including confirmation of a gesture-based game that is set to be included for free with the hardware.

Microsoft’s Jeff Stone revealed the new information on the Xbox 360-exclusive game in question, TotemBall, which was first announced in May of this year. It is being developed by UK-based Strange Flavour and Freeverse, both of whom are mainly known for their Macintosh titles.

Titan Quest
Bytesector :: Thursday, August 17, 2006
“The 3D hack-and-slash genre used to have one game to rule them all. Everyone knows about the classic Action/RPG title Diablo, and they probably also wish that it hadn’t dwindled into nothing more than a memory. So, in a genuine attempt to garner interest from angst filled youth, disheartened middle age employees and the fantasy daydreamer populous, THQ has taken a mere mortal and turned them into a sword wielding, fireball whipping, butt kicker to rekindle your love for hack-and-slash games with Titan Quest.”

The Future of Gaming on the Macintosh Platform

“OS X has never been as famous for its third party applications as it has been for the ones that Apple has directly included with the operating system. All of those applications deal with digital media, and as you know, that’s the niche that Apple fills in a big way.”

Pixel By Pixel has released this game for the people that want a peaceful, non-violent game. The good points of the game include no violence, easy to learn (too easy IMO). It’s designed to be played by anyone, including children. The graphics are representative of the characters and animals they are supposed to be, with the dolphin being clearly a dolphin an orca clearly an orca etc.

Civ City
Driver Heaven :: Tuesday, August 15, 2006
CivCity shares its name with one of the PC’s best franchises – Civilization. Despite this fact, the game was not created by Firaxis, but by Firefly studios, the authors of the popular strategy game Stronghold. The design of the game reflects this, as it bears a striking resemblance to all of the Stronghold games. There is nothing wrong with that, but at times I wished Firaxis had more input on the game design. As it is, the only connection between this game and Civilization is the name and some little tidbits like the civilopedia.

Is the XBOX 360 Really For Moms

The bigger picture: Has gaming finally reached the massive mainstream market?

Insomnia365 Game Server
Bjorn 3D :: Monday, August 14, 2006
Setting up your own game server actually is pretty easy. Most games have a free server-component that can be downloaded and set up either under Linux or Windows. The problem of course is that you first of all need a server and second of all you need the bandwidth. So setting up the server at home might not be the best option.

The Planet has a game server line called Insomnia365 which promises not only to give you a good server for your games but also make it easy to administrate and set up the games. We got a opportunity to test a server for a few months and on the following pages we’re going to tell you what was cool and what was less cool with this whole package.

I’ve really enjoyed playing around with the Call of Juarez demo, so I thought it was worth doing up a Call of Juarez Tweak Guide. As you would expect from a game which has so much to offer, it’s a bit of beast to run on most systems. It ranks on par with games like Oblivion both for eye candy and for system requirements in getting things running smoothly. Fortunately the new version of the Chrome engine used by Techland is customizable enough for our purposes, so in this guide we examine in detail what the in-game settings actually do, the issue of game loading times, and how to further tweak and optimize the game using some advanced configuration settings. There are also a range of troubleshooting tips for common problems people experience with this game.
