Installing Linux onto your Sony PS3
Tweak Town :: Wednesday, February 27, 2008
“Linux on Sony hardware has been done before, but not to any great success. Some of you may remember that the PS2 could run a strange version of the open source OS with a bought package that gave you a 40GB HDD, a keyboard and a mouse. However, it did not allow for any functionality of the DVD-ROM because Sony thought you might start using your PS2 to rip off all their games.
There was a lot of noise in the beginning of the PS3’s marketing-hype-launch that the console would have Linux pre-loaded, but Sony came to their senses when they realized how much more work that was going to be for them. So we are left to figure this one out for ourselves.”

Eternal Sonata
Bona Fide Reviews :: Monday, February 18, 2008
Eternal Sonata is the latest RPG from Tri-Crescendo, starring – of all potential heroes – Frederic Chopin. Yes, that Chopin – the Poet of the Piano, the famous composer who tragically died of tuberculosis aged only 39. The game takes place inside his last dream, as he slips into a coma on his deathbed. Here, he meets a young girl called Polka, who is also affected by a terminal illness. In this imaginary world, people suffering in such a way are able to use magic, and Polka has the power to heal others. However, most people are afraid of catching her illness and avoid her, so she has no real friends.
NYKO Zero Wireless PS2 Controller Review
Futurelooks :: Monday, February 18, 2008
Third party peripherals are something that’s usually avoided in the gaming world. I’m not saying that all of them are bad though. However, unless you want to shell out the big bucks for something very high quality, your results can really vary. Well, the good folks down at NYKO have come out with the Zero Wireless PS2 Controller, is it’s price worth it? Will it prove once and for all that third party peripherals aren’t as bad as everyone says?
CSI: Hard Evidence Xbox 360 Review
Gamepyre :: Monday, February 18, 2008
While there are other titles out there more worthy of play on your 360, for those fans of the television series and of detective type games in general, the CSI brand has satisfied whatever craving I might have had at the moment. It’s not a truly exceptional game by any means; in fact, it is quite bland as far as video games go. However, it will satisfy your thirst, if only for a short time, for playing armchair criminalist. I was neither happy nor unsatisfied with this game. It gave me what I wanted in game-play and that’s all I asked for. It didn’t exceed any of my expectations, but it didn’t disappoint either.
Universe at War (PC) review
YouGamers :: Monday, February 18, 2008
“The single player campaign doesn’t really prepare you for fighting on equal terms; almost every mission starts from vastly unequal starting positions, and the AI doesn’t even try to “play to win” – it just goes on doing whatever the script says it should be doing. Due to this heavily scripted nature, the other available modes are a whole different ball game in comparison. Once you turn to skirmish games, the actual AI, starting from equal position, will immediately trounce you to tiny bits. Only after you readjust your tactics and start playing under the normal RTS mindset of maximizing your production and resources, and fully exploiting the different unit types to support each other, can you can expect to start pulling off wins.”
The Sims : Castaway Stories (PC)
Gaming Heaven :: Monday, February 18, 2008
The Sims: Castaway Stories is the latest in the long line of releases for this money making franchise. This time however it is a stand alone title, meaning you won’t need to already own The Sims, The Sims 2 or The Sims: Life Stories to play it. The game is however based on the Sims 2, but is the first game to feel different to its predecessors.
Hanging With The TUROK Crew at the Propaganda Games Studio
Futurelooks :: Monday, February 18, 2008
After a lengthy hiatus, the TUROK franchise is back! The new title, published by Touchstone and developed by Propaganda Games in Vancouver, BC, promises to bring back many of the elements that made the original Turok a winner way back when on the original Nintendo 64. The original Turok gave us the first truly fun first-person shooter experience on the console and offered a unique world filled with dinosaurs as we explored it through the eyes of our Native American Hero, TUROK. We dropped in on Propaganda Games’ pre-launch event to play the game and find out where some of the inspiration for the new game came from.
Ageia PhysX Card
Driver Heaven :: Monday, February 18, 2008
Over the course of the years, games have been growing progressively more complex. While we were happy with vertex enemies back in the 90s and regular textures were enough to please us at the break of the new millennium, we immediately mark a game as ugly and last-gen if some sort of advanced lighting or pixel shading is not in effect today.
Similarly, nobody complained when shooting an explosive barrel in Quake 2 only killed a nearby enemy, but today its body must not only get thrown into the air realistically, but the body must behave as a real world object would in the given situation. Gamers even look for more complex physics body interactions such as the impact a box has on other objects when thrown at them. If you take a look at the upcoming Force Unleashed trailers you will see that things are moving forward at blazing speeds and as a result only the fastest CPUs can be sure of handling the increased load.
The graphics industry faced a similar situation back in the days of 3dfx, when something had to be done to offload some of the work from the CPU and allow games to develop. Back then 3D acceleration was introduced and right now AGEIA is trying to do the same for the world of physics.

Saitek Cyborg Command Unit Review
i4u :: Friday, February 08, 2008
“The device is like a small keyboard with 21 keys and three shift states allowing you to bind lots of commands to the device. If you are a gamer who travels often to LAN parties, this is an excellent device for you. To change shift modes you slide an analog switch on the upper left corner of the Saitek Cyborg Command Unit. As you change modes the backlighting color of the gamepad changes to so you know what mode you are in at a glance. The backlighting changes through green, red, and yellow colors.”

The Club (Xbox 360 and Playstation 3)
Gaming Heaven :: Friday, February 08, 2008
The Club is a Bizarre Creations game which according to them is “sure to refresh the mechanics of 3rd person action shooters just as we have shaken up the racing genre. The Club is designed to be an addictive experience with rewarding gameplay that tests your skill to the limit and offers a relentless pace never before seen within the genre.”
Some pretty bold claims indeed, however I urge you to let me break it all down into layman’s terms. The Club is basically a game in which you run around, shooting enemies as fast and accurately as possible to get as high a score as you can, via a multiplier system. It sure doesn’t sound quite as appealing as the PR fluff so I will elaborate.
Devil May Cry 4 (Playstation 3)
Gaming Heaven :: Friday, February 08, 2008
Many eons ago when my young kids were in bed, I sat with my trusty Playstation 2 playing Devil May Cry by the firelight, and man this game just took action platforming to a whole new level. The incredible speed of combat and the pulsating action assured the game cult status and a true classic right up there with God Of War. Unfortunately however with the “next gen” consoles (lets drop this term already please, they have been out for years!) you are not instantly assured a next gen gaming experience. So it would be fair to say, that before I first popped the DVD into the shiny black monolith, I was concerned that somehow the feeling of the franchise would be lost behind the enhanced eye candy. Well I can assure you before I proceed any further, that the game rings true to the series and is a marvellous game to play, both for die hard fans of the series and for casual newcomers.
Pirates Of the Burning Sea (PC)
Gaming Heaven :: Friday, February 08, 2008
If you are an RPG fan your choices are usually limited to fantasy or futuristic settings. At best there is a sporadic game here and there that offers role playing fans a chance to be a modern day character or perhaps a history inspired adventurer. With MMOs the choices are even more limited. Title after title has us battling dragons and sorcerers, with the occasional jump into the future where goblins are replaced by aliens and spells by rifles (for some reason swords tend to stay swords). So you can imagine how much interest Pirates of the Burning Sea generated when the authors promised this Caribbean based MMO. Heck, the game deserves a chance purely because of its unique setting. But is that all it has going for itself, or does it offer more?
Rock Band for the Xbox 360 and PS3 Review
Futurelooks :: Friday, February 08, 2008
When Harmonix decided that they were going to leave the Guitar Hero franchise behind so that they could develop Rock Band for Electronic Arts Partners and MTV Games, people wondered how the two franchises would ultimately compare to one another. Being the proud owner of both Guitar Hero III and Rock Band, I can certainly say that there are merits to both games, but if you want a truly orgasm-inducing multiplayer experience, you really have no choice but to opt for Rock Band. It really is that much fun.

Tomb Raider Underworld Preview
YouGamers :: Tuesday, February 05, 2008
“Particular focus was made of the new Lara Croft model – nothing radical, but more “natural” looking than previous renditions. The range of preset moves and animations has grown (for example, moving Lara through vegetation will force her to brush branches and leaves out of the way) but the level of interaction with the environment has improved too. In the past, contact with water would simply result in a visual reaction and although that still happens, wet surfaces and objects now behave differently to dry ones. Previously Lara would be able to climb all objects with equal ease, but this is no longer the case in Underworld.”

With 2007 now over and a raft of high quality first person shooters in our wake (Halo 3, Bioshock, Crysis, Call Of Duty 4), it is going to take something special to grab our attention in 2008. With this in mind I was pleased to receive a copy of Turok for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. So do we start off 2008 with a bang, or merely a whimper?
Nights: Journey Of Dreams (Wii)
Driver Heaven :: Tuesday, February 05, 2008
Nights is a game about the world of dreams, a fantastic far away land you journey to while asleep. It is in fact your dreams that create this world, giving you, the player a choice of seperate sets of missions at the beginning of the game, what options have we then ? mmmm, so……….. “are you a dude or a chick?” the game asks. Yawns. You either choose Helen or Will. Immediately we are presented with “Nights” a non gender specific jester, who sounds extremely like my overtly camp hair stylist. Apparently Nights is a character you can merge with, and he allows you to harness his powers to fly around the land. Before we progress any further, can I just say, this guy has to be one of the ugliest in game characters I have ever had the misfortune to meet. He was most certainly beat with the ugly stick during birth.
Wireless Multimedia Flexible Keyboard Review
Dragonsteel Mods :: Tuesday, February 05, 2008
“Flexible keyboards have become very popular, even being featured in big budget movies, so it’s no surprise that there seems to suddenly be an abundance of them floating around everywhere now because of their co-starring role in Die Hard. Most you’ll see are the corded kind, but today I’ve got the cordless version for review, called the Wireless Multimedia Flexible Keyboard, and it’s essentially the same as the corded version, but I was curious as to how it performs compared to other wireless keyboards. So read on to check it out and see what I learned… ”
Kingdom Under Fire: Circle Of Doom (Xbox 360)
Driver Heaven :: Monday, February 04, 2008
Kingdom Under Fire as a series has always been founded on strong strategy elements as well as including spellcasting and levelling, just like you would find in a plethora of other RPG’s. The series was recently revitalised with Crusaders on the Xbox in 2004, which was a great game. Circle of Doom is a bold move for the developers at Blue Side, as the game is basically ditching a lot of the strategy elements and replacing them with a pure action role playing experience. Is the game any good however, or is it just another stagnant limpfisted action based hack n slash?
Daze Products Nintendo DS Game Chamber Review
Big Bruin :: Monday, February 04, 2008
It is frustrating to spend $30 to $50 on a Nintendo DS game only to have it lost or damaged. A simple container to hold games securely and only allow one game out at a time is a great option! For a relatively small price you can potentially save yourself a good deal of money and avoid plenty of headaches with the Daze Products Nintendo DS Game Chamber.

Pirates of the Burning Sea Review
YouGamers :: Monday, February 04, 2008
“For those of us who enjoy economic warfare more than sinking ships, or just take heart to the Rules of Acquisition (specifically the one that says “War is good for business”), I’m happy to report that there is a solid economics sub-game in Pirates of the Burning Sea. Making replacements for all those sunken ships and associated bits is a complex affair. One structure is used to harvest trees for wood, another turns the wood to ship components (with nails, made from iron bars, made from iron ore). In addition to wooden parts, you need sails, brass, provisions, rigging, gunpowder, barrels… the list of finished goods required as components for ships just goes on and on, and in practice you need the cooperation eight to ten players to set up a self-sustaining manufacturing operation for larger ships – any less, and you have to buy some of the bits from other players.”
No More Heroes (Wii)
Driver Heaven :: Monday, February 04, 2008
Suda-51 have made some fantastic games in the past, hopefully some of you will remember Killer 7 which was one of my favourite games of 2005. No More Heroes is a game dripping with dark humour while maintaining the same high levels of art design, so it is sure to appeal to fans of the previous title. However, many of you who didn’t like Killer 7 for the plodding and repetitive action should find No More Heroes a more appealing game experience as it features some marvellous fight scripting with an insanely high level of gore. No More Heroes is a game experience quite unlike any I have enjoyed before, especially considering the platform is the “family friendly” Wii.
Ghost Squad (Wii)
Gaming Heaven :: Monday, February 04, 2008
Are you a lover of American high octane, gun totting, silly one liner movies? If so then Ghost Squad on the Wii might just tickle your fancy. It is a light hearted, tongue in cheek shooter with no pretences of bringing anything new to the table. For those of you who have no idea what “Ghost Squad” is all about, Sega has taken the 2004 arcade release and brought it onto the Wii entirely as it was albeit with some extras and Wii specific control adjustments.
Railway Simulator (PC)
Driver Heaven :: Monday, February 04, 2008
Picture a field in your mind and scale the size of it according to these phrases. Number of PC gamers in the world… BIG… number of PC gamers who love simulation titles… quite big… number of PC gamers who love trains… getting smaller… number of PC gamers who love simulation titles about trains. Okay, you get the general idea – it’s a small market but one that’s certainly worth a publisher having a go at. Microsoft thought so too, and seven years ago they commissioned UK-based Kuju Entertainment to produce their first Train Simulator game. They had planned a sequel but things went wrong for Kuju for a while, forcing the cancellation of the deal. However, the plucky developers soon got back on track (groan) and ploughed full steam ahead (even worse) with their own Rail Simulator – “an authentic railway experience.”
Denied Ops Hands On & Interview
YouGamers :: Monday, February 04, 2008
“The co-op gameplay (2 player online or split-screen) felt quite similar: it was nice to have a really useful soldier next to you, providing covering fire and so on, but it didn’t feel particularly necessary. This is almost certainly down to the difficulty setting, for which C:DO has a dynamic version, affecting later levels; by not progressing far enough into the game, there’s good chance that we didn’t experience enough scenarios that truly require the unique capabilities of each person (one is a sniper, the other a heavy machine gunner). The opening level provides a spot of tank action, though, so one should expect various vehicles and new tactics to appear throughout the game, as the tank was more effective with both players in it, compared to being handled by just one.”
HellGate London (PC)
Driver Heaven :: Monday, February 04, 2008
Before you start writing us e-mails about the game being several months old let us reassure you that we are well aware of the fact. And believe it or not, we know that the game didn’t exactly impress most reviewers back when it was released. So why on earth are we writing a late review to a mediocre game when newer, better games are finally starting to appear? Because sometimes you have to spend more than a day with a game to fully appreciate it. Because sometimes a game sees so many improvements after release that it no longer is the game it was when it hit store shelves. And also because we are huge fans of Diablo 2 and let’s face it – Hellgate: London is as close as we’ll get to a true Diablo 2 successor for the time being.
