Beyond The Sword (Civ4) review
YouGamers :: Tuesday, July 31, 2007
“Beyond the Sword introduces a new concept to Civilization – Corporations. On the surface, they appear somewhat similar to religions – you use a Great Person to set up a corporation once all the prerequisites (technology, access to some of the required resources) are met, and the corporation HQ is built in your city. This city (and your civilization) will then gain money based on the number of other cities your corporation spreads to. However, each corporate office also adds a considerable cost to the city maintenance while offering a bonus in food, culture, production or science. The bonus depends on the number of resources available, so there is a reason to capture or trade for multiple sources of one resource, assuming you have a corporation that consumes the resource type.”

Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2
Gamepyre :: Monday, July 30, 2007
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 is a pretty good game if you’re a fan of shooters that require a bit more thought than just ‘run and gun’. The focus here was on realism, and it was done well. Remember, if you go running in without checking the tactical map, or at least a quick glance, expect to die before you know what hit you. This game is about patience and tactics, not who has the most ammo.

Ghost Recon Warfighter 2
Gaming Heaven :: Monday, July 30, 2007
If you gave the first predecessor a chance you probably liked it. Regardless of which version you tried you got solid gameplay, good visuals and some pretty intense movie like action scenes. The Xbox360 version leaned a bit towards pure actions while the PC version catered to a more mature, tactic seeking crowd. With GRAW 2 for the Xbox360 Ubisoft played it safe and delivered an exact replica of the first with some minor adjustments done here and there, repacked in a more rural setting. Can they strike gold with the PC version as well, or are we PC gamers a tougher crowd to please?

The Darkness Xbox 360 Review
Gamepyre :: Wednesday, July 25, 2007
As far as FPS titles go The Darkness it’s not a bad game, it’s just not great. I had high hopes so maybe I had farther to fall when it did not live up, but I tried to separate that and ask myself, was the game fun? There were parts that started to be fun but they were short lived and far and few between. Over all I don’t think it was, and most of all the unique features in this game are not fleshed out, they feel tacked on. I think Starbreeze made a stable FPS the added all the Darkness stuff on and it does not fit right.

“The best part about the Thrustmaster T-charge All NW is that you no longer have to remove the batteries from the Wii remotes to charge them, you simply place the remotes into the cradle and they keep charged when not in use. Two new battery doors are included with the Thrustmaster T-charge All NW that hold the smaller rechargeable AAA batteries and have the rear contacts for recharging to happen. The batteries last a long time and require four hours for a full charge and provide up to 15 hours of continuous use on a charge.”

Black Mesa Interview
YouGamers :: Tuesday, July 24, 2007
Rose: Because of the improved scale that Source offers, we are able to make areas of the facility more to a real-world scale, because we have more room and more power to work with. This is evident in areas like Surface Tension, which could, in terms of scale measurement, be on par with a real-world facility of a similar nature. Levels have the most leeway in terms of relating to their original counterparts, though, and that’s one department where what you see in Half-Life won’t necessarily always match up with Black Mesa. These changes are all being done with logic and visual quality as their backing, though, so it’ll still look damned good.”

Transformers PC Game Review
Gamepyre :: Tuesday, July 24, 2007
It really does pain me to give something bearing the Transformers name a bad score, but I can’t lie about this game. Sure, you get to see a couple of Transformers that aren’t in the movie, but that doesn’t make up for the absolutely horrible controls. Even if you are a total Transformers nut, I’d suggest waiting till the price comes down. Save yourself a few bucks and go see the movie again instead, it will be a better use of you time.

Lost Planet: Extreme Condition (PC) review
YouGamers :: Friday, July 20, 2007
“When the demo was released, ATI immediately cried foul as they were not consulted – and it didn’t work on the Radeon HD 2900 XT with the drivers available at that time. ATI has since released special “hotfix” drivers that fix the visual problems. However, performance on ATI hardware is still far from acceptable. After testing Lost Planet: Extreme Condition on different DX10 offerings from ATI and NVIDIA, our conclusion is that unless you have at least a GeForce 8800 GTS, you can’t enable all features in the DX10 mode, and in any case same hardware will run same settings in DX9 at least 10-20% faster.”

World in Conflict Beta Preview
Gamepyre :: Monday, July 16, 2007
Recently, World in Conflict from Sierra has gone into its July Beta event, giving us here at Gamepyre.com a chance to check it out before the distant September release date. Set during the Cold War conflict between the USA and the USSR, World in Conflict is a different type of RTS. Most of us who play RTS games expect to see a few things in just about every game of this type. Sierra won’t be releasing this potential gem until September 2007, and I for one cannot wait. Pre-orders get another map to play for this beta, I haven’t gotten a chance to play that one yet though. I know I for one will be getting as much play as I can out of this in anticipation of the release, and from the looks of server populations, I’m not the only one waiting anxiously for this game to go gold and then hit store shelves. Just a couple of months until the Cold War warms up.

Maximus – FIRMWARE TOOLBOX V4.0
Xbox-Scene :: Tuesday, July 10, 2007
A new software flasher for the xbox360 dvd-rom, Hitachi-LG GDR-3120 ..
The credit on ixtreme firmware is for Commodore4eva, I only ported to 360 Firmware Toolbox(info (http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox360-tools/360FirmwareToolbox.php )) to support all variants of 78/79 drives (and upper). SPECIAL NOTE ON FLASHING HITACHI 79FK DRIVES: Sorry for the confusion that the “79 flashing” video have caused, that video was uploaded by one no-more-beta-tester without my permision. I wake up this morning flooded by tons of emails for congratulations and I feel the need to clarify the situation. It is possible to flash by software the 79 drives but needs the previous installation of a physical device (as the one proposed by team xecuter). Hardware devices will be needed until a better solution arrives (our research never stop). Me and some friends have developed also a small device to allow the flashing, the info can be accesed here: v79 FlashKey (http://www.maximusgames.net/79passkeyinfo.php ) New in 4.0: – Added: Smart Hack Patcher now implements ixtreme 1.2 (thanks to c4e) – Added: Now Supports 100% BENQ Firmwares (spoof, key changing, etc) – Added: Option to Restore Original Firmwares based on any dump you have – Corrected: Several other bugs – Added: OCX’s included on the release (there are available on Microsoft site anyway)
Note, this does NOT mean that you can dump and flash benq firmwares with fw toolbox. It simply supports reading the firmware and spoofing it. Shadowrun (PC) review
YouGamers :: Monday, July 09, 2007
“Microsoft has used online activation similar to Vista itself for Shadowrun and Halo 2. We recently ran into the practical limitations of the scheme. While running some tests for an upcoming article, we had the need to install Shadowrun on an additional system beyond the two we had previously used in the review, and we were slightly shocked to get the following nice window.”

Driver: Parallel Lines (PC) review
YouGamers :: Monday, July 09, 2007
“Driver: Parallel Lines fills the streets with traffic that seem to have only one goal – to annoy you. Everyone else seems to be driving at 20mph, while same cars under your control can’t seem to be able to move at under 80mph. So you cut to the left lane to overtake, and happen to pass a cop car… and immediately get flagged as a criminal for driving on the wrong side of the street. Stop and pay a fine? Won’t work. Even if you just run a red light, the response is always the same: cops will try to gun you down. I’ve heard stories of overeager cops, but this is a bit ridiculous.”

Analyst: Xbox 360 Price Cut Imminent
Xbox-Scene :: Monday, July 09, 2007
From next-gen.biz (http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=6299&Itemid=2 ):
Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter stated in a note to investors today that Microsoft will announce an Xbox 360 price cut tomorrow at the start of the revamped E3 Media & Business Summit, which takes place all week. He said that the price cut will affect all three Xbox 360 models. The $299 Core pack will drop to $249; the $399 Premium pack will drop to $349; and the recently released $479 Elite model will drop to $399. Such a price cut would be a likely move for Microsoft following the PS3 pricing announcement today. Sony dropped the price of the 60GB PS3 from $599 to $499 and announced an 80GB PS3 with MotorStorm bundled for $599. The price drop appears to be in response to lower-than-expected sales of the console. Microsoft’s next move? Code-name Falcon
Xbox-Scene :: Monday, July 09, 2007
From Dean Takahashi at mercurynews.com (http://blogs.mercurynews.com/aei/2007/07/microsofts_next_move_code-name_falcon.html ):
Here’s a trade secret that Microsoft is unlikely to publicly acknowledge. Sony’s cutting the price on the PlayStation 3. How will Microsoft react? We’ll find out soon. But a key part of the strategy is going to be a project code-named Falcon. Falcon is the name for the latest internal electronics in the Xbox 360. It will have an IBM microprocessor and an AMD/ATI graphics chip that are manufactured in a 65-nanometer production process. These are cost-reduced chips that do the same thing as their 90-nanometer predecessors, but they’re smaller. Microsoft is in the process of qualifying the new Falcon chips and motherboard this summer. I expect it will launch Xbox 360s with the new Falcon innards this fall. That is why the company has been able to say that it has solved its manufacturing quality problems. Microsoft is likely to spend a little more money on heat sinks to make sure that the overheating problem doesn’t resurface with Falcon. The good thing about the smaller chips is that they will likely be easier to make in mass quantities and they shouldn’t fail as often. Quality should automatically go up. That’s what folks said about the 90-nanometer generation. But the 65-nanometer production process is a known quantity at this point at places such as IBM for sure and possibly at other suppliers such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. So rather than fix the problems with the 90-nanometer machine, Microsoft has the easier problem now of getting a 65-nanometer machine to work right. I suspect that is why Robbie Bach, president of the Entertainment & Devices group, said on Thursday on a conference call with analysts that the company has “its hands around it at the engineering level.”
Full Story: mercurynews.com (http://blogs.mercurynews.com/aei/2007/07/microsofts_next_move_code-name_falcon.html )

Asian Manufacturers About RRoD: Microsoft is too Cheap
Xbox-Scene :: Sunday, July 08, 2007
From smarthouse.com.au (http://www.smarthouse.com.au/Gaming/Console/L3R2T2S6?page=1 ):
Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft’s entertainment and devices division, declined in an interview to say what specifically caused the failures or how high the failure rate has been, but Asian manufacturers of the Xbox 360 who have been pressured by Microsoft to lower costs by as much as 15% say that the problem is caused by poor Microsoft design and the Company buying low cost components in an effort to beat Sony. Recently Microsoft adopted various strategies to be more cost competitive with its Xbox 360 game consoles, with moves including asking for a price reduction from Taiwan-based component makers and working with Lite-On IT for its add-on HD-DVD drive, according to sources in Taiwan. One Asian manufacturer that SmartHouse spoke to on Friday said “Microsoft have known of this problem for a long time. They are trying to blame component manufacturers but it was a combination of bad design and them (Microsoft) wanting everything cheap. This is what caused the problem along with them wanting to beat Sony to market. A lot of manufacturers were pushed to deliver components without much testing of the components working together inside the console”. Xbox-Scene :: Sunday, July 08, 2007
A new firmware has been released for the Hitachi-LG GDR-3120L dvd-rom unit for the xbox360 ..
Defeats all current and some future Xbox Live detection attempts. Thanks to all the beta testers,everyone involved for without their effort this would not have been possible. Keep up the good work everyone. Thanks also go to Fuzzylogic and GAryOPA. Always recommended: If your drive is flashed USE A RESTORE FIRST (Use the restore included on this package) Two Commands (for flashing use only one: FlashIX): FLASHIX.BAT: Flashes your drive with iXtreme 1.2 Fw Stealth (Media Detect 2,and Firwmare Stealth, (NO F900 Core) RESTORE.BAT: Return your drive to original State, even if you have firmware stealth in your drive *RECOMENDATION: If you have flashed your drive in the past use RESTORE first. If it is a brand new drive use directly the Flash command you like.
I would like to note that while this release contains all retail versions of the hitachi, v78 users will currently not be able to flash until fw toolbox is updated, or another program is created to flash that version. v79 is also included, though can only be flashed externally with a tsop programmer (or until a software solution is created). This firmware is released to the public tested, though we do expect bugs, as with any project. Please post in the forums to let us know your results. Xbins Xbox Live logger! We have organized a small project to keep our page here (http://www.xbins.org/xblive ) updated with (almost) daily logs of commands being initiated while connected to xbox live. The “Deluxe” plan requires a credit card and a payment ranging from US$6.95 a month to US$9.95 a month based on how long you sign up for, but gives you access to all games as well as GameTap TV. Additionally, there are over 450 games which you can purchase through GameTap, similar to other online game purchases.

Xbox 360 Failure Rate? Do the Math
Xbox-Scene :: Friday, July 06, 2007
From gamepolitics.com (http://gamepolitics.com/2007/07/06/xbox-360-failure-rate-do-the-math/ ):
Now that Microsoft has done the right thing about the Xbox 360’s rampant hardware problems, one key question remains: What is the failure rate for the system? MS won’t say. Now, math is not especially GP’s strong suit, but if each repair costs MS $100, that translates to a staggering failure rate of 86%. At $200, the failure rate is 43%. At $300 it’s 29%. At $400, it’s 22% There is a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff we can’t know here. But, based on the numbers, a failure rate between 29% and 43% would not be unreasonable. So maybe those 33% reports aren’t so far off the mark, after all.
Full Story: gamepolitics.com (http://gamepolitics.com/2007/07/06/xbox-360-failure-rate-do-the-math/ )

Microsoft misses 12 million Xbox 360 shipment target
Xbox-Scene :: Friday, July 06, 2007
From gamesindustry.biz (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=26435 ):
Peter Moore has confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that Microsoft failed to meet its 12 million shipment target for Xbox 360, but said the company is optimistic about the coming holiday season. In a conference call, Microsoft CFO Chris Liddell said 11.6 million Xbox 360 consoles were shipped by the deadline of June 30. Before downgrading its estimate to 12 million, Microsoft initially announced 13-15 million units would be shipped. Liddell acknowledged that the figure is slightly shy of projections, but said Microsoft is still “happy with that number”. He also stated that Microsoft expects its Xbox and entertainment and devices division to turn a profit for the 2008 fiscal year. Lost Planet (PC DX10)
Gaming Heaven :: Thursday, July 05, 2007
PC gamers are generally very biased when it comes to console ports. No surprises here, as the vast majority of ports end up being stinking piles of dog doodoo. Because of that even the games that would deserve the attention often get overlooked or worse, criticized regardless of their quality. Lost Planet aims to break this tradition, as it not only is a port of a next-gen game that has been optimized for the PC, but instead raises the graphical bar a few notches higher. If you played the game on the Xbox360 you will know that it can look amazing. Now imagine what happens when the DX9 level graphics get some additional make up in the form of DX10 support. Brain melting graphics coupled with some decent gameplay would be nice, wouldn’t you say so?

Xbox 360 Elite to arrive on October 11th in Japan – Europe Late August?

From tech.co.uk (http://www.tech.co.uk/home-entertainment/gaming/games-consoles/news/xbox-360-elite-gets-autumn-japan-release?articleid=247990604 ):
The Microsoft Xbox 360 Elite is to be released in Japan this coming October. Microsoft Japan made the announcement today, sparking even more rumours that a European release could be close. The Xbox 360 Elite will hit Japanese shelves on 11th October. Microsoft will be hoping that it has the same impact there that it did when it launched earlier this year in the United States. Back in March, we reported that the 360 Elite was set to launch in the UK at some point in the late summer. Then an HMV spokesperson spoke to Eurogamer, and said: “All we understand is that it’s at some point perhaps around the late summer, but we don’t know anything beyond that. Then last week came the rumour that the Elite would launch in Europe on the 24th of August. That fitted in nicely with the earlier ‘late summer’ statement by the HMV man. Microsoft boosts Xbox 360 component orders due to upcoming Halo 3 launch
Xbox-Scene :: Wednesday, July 04, 2007
From beyond3d.com (http://www.beyond3d.com/content/news/321 ):
Words on the street of Taipei has it that optical drive OEM Lite-On IT expects to increase its shipments of DVD-ROM drives for the Xbox 360 at the eve of anticipated launch of the third Halo game, Microsoft’s biggest gaming franchise. DigiTimes also reports that Lite-On declined to comment due to non-disclosure agreements that bind the company to their clients. Sources close to component makers, which supply Lite-On with DVD-ROM drive parts, said that they began to increase their shipment toward Lite-On in June. In other words, the production of DVD-ROM drives has definitely gone up at Lite-On and the Halo (3) effect on the Q3/Q4 Xbox 360 sales has surely something to do with that. EU Commission examines high-def DVD formats
Xbox-Scene :: Wednesday, July 04, 2007
From digitalartsonline.co.uk (http://www.digitalartsonline.co.uk/news/index.cfm?NewsID=8248 ):
The European Union’s antitrust regulator has asked Hollywood studios to turn over information about their negotiations with the developers of high-definition DVD formats, giving them until the end of this week to respond. The European Commission is concerned that exclusive deals struck by some studios with the backers of either the HD DVD or Blu-ray Disc formats may be a sign of anticompetitive activity in the industry. The Commission began looking for evidence of a possible infringement of E.U. antitrust regulations on its own initiative: there have been no complaints from companies in the industry, said Audrey Lemonnier, press officer for the cabinet of European Commissioner for Competition Neelie Kroes. The Commission wrote to a number of major studios in the first half of June, asking them for information about their dealings with the technology developers, Lemonnier said Tuesday. She would not say which studios received the letters, or how many were sent. The studios have until Friday to respond, she said. If the studios’ answers give the Commission cause for doubt, it may launch a full investigation, she said. Microsoft Denies Forza 2 Causing ‘Major’ 360 Issues
Xbox-Scene :: Wednesday, July 04, 2007
From 1up.com (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3160766 ):
This weekend, posts appeared alleging someone at Microsoft was deleting threads on the official Forza 2 forums. The offending thread was reportedly full of gamers claiming Forza Motorsport 2 was causing major problems with Xbox 360s. Forza 2 Community Manager Che Chou responded to the accusations in his Weekly Pitpass Report (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3160766 ): “We’ve gone and tested Forza 2 extensively against the hardware and have confirmed that the game itself does not brick Xbox 360 consoles. Although it might seem like the number of instances is high, especially if you go by forum reactions, it’s actually a very small percentage that it’s happening to and we acknowledge that it’s very frustrating. In other words, there isn’t really a software solution here. …As for the recent controversy over a ‘deleted’ forum thread discussing Forza 2 and hardware freezing, the truth is that I moved it to a moderator’s section for preservation and investigation. It has not been deleted (and I can easily prove it). The thread no longer served a real productive purpose other than as an excuse for folks to violate FM.net’s terms of service with ad hominem attacks. However, thanks to the thread, we are acutely aware that it is a very real issue with a small percentage of our community but a problem nonetheless.”
Full Story: 1up.com (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3160766 )

N-American Retailers Estimate Xbox 360 Failure Rate High as 33 Percent
Xbox-Scene :: Wednesday, July 04, 2007
From dailytech.com (http://www.dailytech.com/Retailers+Estimate+Xbox+360+Failure+Rate+High+as+33+Percent/article7892.htm ):
In an effort to gain a more accurate picture of Xbox 360 failure rate, DailyTech decided to poll retail outlets that sell the Xbox 360 and with it the option to purchase an in-store extended warranty. Out of all Xbox 360 extended warranties sold, we wanted to know how many were claimed by consumers with defective consoles, thus giving us a more accurate failures percentage. After contacting several retailers from various regions in North America, the responses were unanimous: the Xbox 360 is the least reliable gaming console in recent history. Current EB Games or GameStop employees who offered information did so under strict anonymity, as it is against company policy to reveal such information to the public. Furthermore, our sources confirmed that EB Games revised its Canadian warranty policies during early 2007 for consoles solely due to the failure rate of the Xbox 360. EB Games held conference calls for its Canadian stores informing them of the new policy changes and revealing alarming failure rates of the Xbox 360. “The real numbers were between 30 to 33 percent,” said former EB Games employee Matthieu G., adding that failure rate was even greater for launch consoles. “We had 35 Xbox 360s at launch I know more than half of them broke within the first six months (red lights or making circles under the game discs). Two of them were dead on arrival.” The failure rate nearing a third of all Xbox 360 consoles was found at other retailers too. A Best Buy customer service department manager, who wished to remain unnamed, said that failure rates for the console were “between a quarter to a third” of all units sold. Xbox Live India to be Launched in September
Xbox-Scene :: Wednesday, July 04, 2007
From gameguru.in (http://www.gameguru.in/online/2007/02/xbox-live-india-to-be-launched-in-september-by-microsoft/ ):
It’s been a long time since Microsoft has launched the Xbox 360 in India. Gamers here were waiting for a long time to hear the words “Xbox Live India” from Microsoft. It seems that their wait is over as Microsoft is planning to launch the online gaming service in India. The Xbox LIVE launch will take place simultaneously from 23rd to 30th September. All of this will coincide with the Xbox 360’s first anniversary in India, which also falls on the 23rd. What does that mean? Well, it means animations will be smoother, faster and less jarring than the PS3 version. FizzBall Game Review
Mikhailtech :: Monday, July 02, 2007
New levels give new animals and obstacles. The animals themselves are not passive bricks, they move around and they react to being hit when the ball is too small to absorb them. There are even animals like birds and monkeys that climb into trees for which you will first have to hit the tree to get them to leave it. For catching that last animal you can also use a big fan to change the direction of the ball in mid flight, which is a great option for getting that last squirrel. Of course there are also powerups such as unlimited fan power and increasing/decreasing paddle size or ball speed. The Kids Mode adds a wall to the bottom of the screen so you can’t lose a ball, as well as little quizzes at the beginnings of the levels. Controls are simple, either via mouse or keyboard. Unfortunately there’s no gamepad support in Linux. I encountered no bugs while playing this game. My support inquiry regarding gamepad support was answered within one day.
