Fight Night Round 3
Bytesector :: Friday, March 31, 2006
“Let’s get ready to rumble with EA Sports’ Fight Night: Round 3. Not being much of a boxing fan myself, I was pleasantly surprised by how much fun this game is, and how addictive it can be (especially on Xbox Live). Realistic graphics add to the game’s appeal, along with numerous game modes. Although the boxers don’t enter the ring in satin robes, and the product placements are blatant and cheesy (the Burger King king has been rendered and included), FNR3 is as close to boxing as you can get without slipping into gloves and shoving a guard into your mouth.”

Lately we?ve been coming across a lot of titles that you just know are going to be great even before you?ve actually tried the game out. When the words Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter drip from Ubisoft?s mouth it was difficult to not even be the least bit excited. Although many would have embraced the idea of having this one as a launch title, it seems as if Ubi used the extra development time to produce what is arguably the best entry in the Ghost Recon series ever.

A World War II strategy game, is this just another to throw on the mountainous pile? There used to be a time when every game released by Lucasarts was a classic but recently we?ve had many games attempting to cash in on the hype of the Star Wars movies. Games like Clone Wars, Bounty Hunter and Starfighter (on consoles) didn?t leave a lasting impression on anyone and many would say were only released knowing the star wars fanatic would have to add them to their collection. Sure, there have been a few diamonds in the dirt like the Knights of the Old Republic series, the Jedi Knight series or even Republic Commando which all captured the essence of the movies.

There exists some ephemeral quality that separates gamers from the rest of humanity, some thing that makes us, us and them, not us. In particular, we take a look at what draws different types of gamers to the hobby. Every gamer plays for different reasons, but there are common threads that tie the experience together.

Xbox 360 Launch in Taipei

The launch party for the XBOX360 was on tonight in downtown Taipei around the Taipei 101 building, next to the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi department store. Based on what I saw, I’m guessing it went somewhat better than the Japan launch, but may have been somewhat muted due to the fact that the 360 has been available from gobs of game shops already, due to the fact that Taiwan imports most of their games from Japan anyway.

The Xbox Team about the Xbox360 Development Environment
Xbox-Scene :: Sunday, March 19, 2006
By now, you have probably seen many interviews in the gaming press that laud the environment Xbox development kits provide for building games: many studios such as id software now use it as their primary development environment for their next generation projects.
Microsoft brings a lot to the table in the area of software engineering. The standard development environment at Microsoft has evolved since Visual Studio was started, to the point where it is relatively easy to retarget the environment to another platform. The Xbox development environment resembles the Windows environment pretty closely. We start with Visual Studio and add custom things such as our own compiler, build tools, debugger plugins, etc. A lot of our separate content tools also provide integration into Visual Studio as well as other build systems to provide our developers with the flexibility they need to make games. In fact, this has been so critical to our success, the XNA initiative is ramping up to make developers’ lives even easier.

Numerous factions can be joined, such as the thieves or mages guilds, and each contains its own complete storyline and the chance to rise to the head of the faction and reap further rewards. Due to the new AI system, called Radiant AI, the NPCs will have the ability to make their own choices based on the world around them. They will decide where to eat, who to talk, what to say – they will also sleep, go to church, and even steal items, all based on their individual characteristics. They will have full facial animations and lip-synching, and full speech for all dialogs.

Microsoft Responds to Foil on Xbox 360 GPU Heatsink
Xbox-Scene :: Sunday, March 19, 2006
Microsoft has issued a reply via the GamerScore Blog (ran by Xbox employees) to the story about the foil found on some heatsink GPUs:
The video and photos posted by German blog GameStore24.de show thermal interface pads that are not installed incorrectly. They are installed per specification. This foil eliminates the need of a protective liner, which simplifies the final assembly process and minimizes shipping concerns and contamination issues.
Just a reminder that opening the Xbox 360 case voids the warranty. If your console is malfunctioning, call Xbox customer support. They can diagnose whether the system is malfunctioning, and will arrange for repair/replacement if necessary.
The manufacturing team pointed me to the exact part we used. More information on the material can be found here. Here is the way they describe the part, in case any of you want to buy more…(my emphasis): THERMFLOW T558 provides the high performance properties typical of free-film phase change materials with the added benefit of easy removal. MULTIPHASE thermal interface pads are phase-change materials specially formulated for use in high performance devices requiring minimum thermal resistance for maximum thermal performance and component reliability. It provides the high performance of typical phase change materials with the added benefit of improved thermal stability over conventional phase change pads. It is a 0.005 inch (0.13mm) thick, inherently adhesive film that softens at device operating temperatures resulting in “grease-like” performance. T558 has been coated on one side of a conformal metal foil carrier. It is easily attached onto a heat sink or heat spreader, leaving the metal foil surface exposed. This foil eliminates the need of a protective liner, which simplifies the final assembly process and minimizes shipping concerns and contamination issues.

Shane Kim Interview: Halo 3 , Launch, Stock, Demand
Net4Xbox360 :: Wednesday, March 01, 2006
* Next-gen.biz: Is Halo3 coming out this year?
* Shane Kim: It depends. If it’s the game that everyone is expecting then, yes. For us it’s about making a proper impact on the platform. It has to be something with huge significance, so we won’t be rushed.
* Next-gen.biz: Looking back at the launch, and leaving shortages aside, any regrets?
* Shane Kim: Any game developer will tell you they wish they had more time with the hardware. That’s always the case. If you look at the complexity of this console and you add Live…
With the first generation of Xbox we waited a year before launching Live; this year everything went out together. It would have been better to have more time with the development hardware. But this is not a trivial undertaking. It’s very challenging to create this hardware and a network like this.
* Next-gen.biz: Some have said that the launch lacked a single killer game.
* Shane Kim: I don’t think that’s fair. Everyone is looking for a Halo and a GTA, but we have to realize there are only two of those titles in history, and they weren’t those big legends before they launched.
It is easy to look back and say ‘nothing the size of Halo came out’, but the launch titles were all solid good games and there was some amazing work.
I would put this portfolio up against the original Xbox launch portfolio any day. I don’t see the fact that there wasn’t one game that everyone wanted to buy as a criticism. The strength was in the variety.
