Sega’s Super Monkey Ball series has been known for it’s easy to pickup mechanics and overall unique gameplay experience. Although it bears a few resemblances to titles such as Marble Blast, racing through puzzles and participating in minigames is like nothing else when you’re playing as a monkey in a hamster ball. This time around, developer Traveller’s Tales tries to take the game in a new direction by incorporating a story mode. While this game was also released on GameCube and PSP, today we’re taking a look at the PS2 version of the next release in the saga known as Super Monkey Ball Adventure.

The term MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) is relatively new to the gaming scene. As the name suggests games of this genre put large amounts of players into a role playing environment (typically a fantasy world). Obviously the nature of playing requires access to the internet, preferably via a broadband connection. Since most of the world is only now getting proper broad band infrastructure it comes as no surprise that MMO games have only recently started to gain true popularity.

I’ve gone through and updated my America’s Army Tweak Guide for the latest Version 2.7 of the game. While the changes are not as major as I had anticipated – the game engine has remained essentially the same as 2.6 – there is important information about the known bugs in the game including the texture bug, details on how to play against the new AI in offline mode, and of course all the information a starting player needs to get up and running with this complex but enjoyable free game.

Though the truly incredible underlying film and story may have been there, delivered with the occasional flash of genius, I’m just not sure what the hell was wrong with Eidos when they baked up the interface for this game. Considering just how responsive and easy Hitman: Blood Money and Tomb Raider Legend turned out to be to control, it just baffles me why they churned out an engine that ran horribly, and made life extremely difficult, by not allowing the basic functions of gameplay to operate half the time.

Browse through any store that sells video games nowadays and you’ll be amazed at the staggering amount of choice available to the average gamer. Every genre imaginable is playable, whether it’s a gun blazing First Person Shooter, fantasy based Role Playing Game or even a gut wrenching Aviation Simulation. Personally, I’ve always been a fan of the glorious 4X genre, especially after playing the wonderful Master of Orion II, which was released in 1996. Regrettably though, for the last ten years, space-themed 4X games have been a rare sight, with only two coming to mind; Galactic Civilizations and Master of Orion 3. Neither was as good as anticipated, since the first lacked depth and the latter lacked user friendliness. However, when Stardock announced that Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords was in the making, I knew that hope was on the horizon again for the space-themed 4X genre.

The Premium Xbox 360 won’t benefit from a price cut this Christmas – but instead a HD-DVD and console package is due, spearheading a marketing drive of console bundles available from November.
Retail sources have indicated to GamesIndustry.biz that Microsoft is currently planning to price the standalone HD-DVD drive at GBP 199 (~293EUR or ~370USD), and to package it with two HD-DVD movies. The sources also suggested that Microsoft will bundle the Premium console and next-generation movie player together for under GBP 400 (~589EUR, ~745USD) – and that the price could even be as low as GBP 375 (~552EUR, ~700USD).
It’s expected an official Premium bundle will be made available in early November, with a newly released triple-A third-party title included.

A newly discovered Gamestop and EB Games listing reveals an Xbox 360 HDMI cable, a rather ponderous product considering the fact that the console does not have the necessary port to accomodate such a miraculous transmissive device. Is it an expensive adapter that automagically goes from the bulky 360 AV connector to an HDMI output? Feel free to entertain such a possibility, so long as you remember that Microsoft wants nothing to do with it. After constantly pestering them for a comment, they informed us that the product was not one of theirs and that “Microsoft has not announced any additional support beyond component video for HD output. MS is watching the market closely and they will continue to evaluate any options in the face of consumer demand.”

A small, plain box arrived unexpectedly from Redmond over the weekend containing nothing more than the diminutive Xbox Live Vision camera floating in a sea of amniotic packing paper. No retail box here, just the tiny little camera and its accompanying PR fact sheet (“Microsoft Corp.’s line of Xbox 360 Authentic Products continues to grow while …”). The sheet does detail the two bundles that will be released on August 19th.
We hurriedly grabbed some snaps before hooking up the Vision to the ol’ 360 and taking it for a spin around the UNO block … where IT happened. We’ve grown (abnormally) accustomed to the sort of blue language one finds while playing outside of the confines of your Xbox Live friends list — this is of course, entirely different than the blue language you enjoy while playing with your friends, but we digress — but it wasn’t ten minutes before we had our first PG-13 exposure. The developer’s support is very important to keep the game running, fixing bugs, and to prevent cheating. That’s why many online games are being patched all the time – sometimes the developer is making a mistake that can have a big negative influence over the game. For example, Client & Server stability issues that can lead to a crash. Usually, when a respected developer is making these kinds of mistakes, they release a fix in a timely manner of a few hours or a week. At least, that’s what usually happens when a respected developer (like Valve, for example) has a bug in one of their popular games.

Xport released a new version of PCSXBox(info) – a PlayStation emulator for Xbox. What’s new/fixed: * Save state loading caused crashes under certain circumstances. This has been fixed. * Defaulted “Auto load most recent save state” to off since this seems to be causing lots of problems. If this is not disabled automatically for you, I suggest making sure it’s always off unless you know what you’re doing.

With PlayStation 3’s November global rollout set to be hampered by a severe hardware shortfall, Microsoft Europe boss Chris Lewis has turned up the heat in the next-generation stand-off, boldly pledging that there will be “no shortages anywhere in the region over Christmas” for Xbox 360.
Lewis’s comments came in an interview with GI.biz’s sister site, Eurogamer TV, at last week’s Leipzig Games Convention. When asked if he was confident of having enough hardware to meet demand over the peak period, Lewis replied: “Very confident. We were pretty tight after this last Christmas, [but] we tripled production; we put plenty of inventory in the air rather than using the water because it was important to get the stock to the right places at the right time.”

Xbox strategy group member and outspoken blogger Andre Vrignaud has responded to a recent open dialogue with former Sony Development head and current technical director for Ubisoft, Mark DeLoura, regarding Sony’s Blu-ray support with PS3, concluding, to his surprise, that the two are in “violent agreement.”
Vrignaud kicked off the debate with two earlier posts on his Ozymandias blog, citing Sony claims that the Blu-ray’s increased storage capacity were essential for its inclusion in its next generation hardware. On the contrary, said Vrignaud, it was drive speed that should be the deciding factor, and there, he concluded, the Blu-ray might fall short:

In the battle of new optical storage formats, Blu-ray Disc has added another weapon — even more storage.
Japan’s TDK has developed a prototype single-sided recordable blue laser disc with a capacity of 200GB, surpassing the current 25GB capacity for single-layer Blu-ray discs and 50GB for dual-layer discs, the company announced at the IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin.
