Nyko Metal Pedal Review

What do you call a person who pretends to be a musician?

A drummer.

In all seriousness, not everyone can be as awesome as me while playing a little guitar controller for Rock Band or Guitar Hero.  Thanks to Rock Band and Guitar Hero World Tour, those people can play the drums.  Playing these toy drums feel more like playing real instruments than the little guitar controllers.  Until the cheap foot pedal breaks, reminding you just how much of a toy these thing can be.

If you need a better replacement foot pedal or just want to pretend to be Lars Ulrich (of Metallica fame), then you might consider getting a new drum pedal for your musical gaming rig.

“But the Rock Band and Guitar Hero drum kits aren’t compatible with each other” I hear you cry.  Not to worry, because the Nyko Metal pedal is compatible with both sets.  But why tell you all about it when the marketing folks at Nyko have paid good money for someone to write a nice spooge…

Keep the beat with a pedal that can take a beating with the Metal Pedal from Nyko. The Metal Pedal features reinforced metal plating for unparalleled durability and a unique hard rock design evoking the spirit of rock icons past and present. On the next page we take a close look at the Metal Pedal…

Looking at the device, it’s easy to notice that it appears much beefier than the standard pedals that come with a drum kit.  The pedal is a bit wider, and slightly longer than the Rock Band 2 pedal.  It also features a “hardcore” skeleton, but this may only appeal to those into Death Metal or Hard Rock, which may limit the audience that is attracted to this accessory.

Even though it looks much beefier, it is still mostly made of plastic.  The only metal part of this drum pedal is the top plating, and that is rather thin.  In all honesty, it doesn’t appear to be made any more sturdy than the new Rock Band 2 drum pedal.  The springs feel a bit looser, which makes it easier to depress, which you’ll appreciate when playing the last half of “One” on Hard or Expert.

Most people only have one drum kit, and Nyko has you covered, as this drum pedal works with both Rock Band (1 and 2) and Guitar Hero World Tour kits.  There is an in-line switch on the red connector wire that lets you select which drum kit you’re using.  The kit even comes with an adapter that lets you plug in two pedals to your drum’s pedal jack.  Now your left foot can do more than just balance you… you’ll have to use your whole butt now!

The Nyko Metal Pedal is a good product with excellent compatibility.  Some people might be turned off by the whole “death metal” look, but it has a looser feel and wider base.  The build quality is much better than the original Rock Band pedal, but appears about the same as the second-generation pedals.

category rating comments
Quality 3 Really not any better constructed than other second-generation drum pedals
Innovation 4 Kudos for making it compatible with both major drum kits.
Performance 4 The looser feel may help you perform better.  Signal is just as responsive as OEM.
Installation 4 Easy to hook up.  Just select the correct drum kit on the switch.
Value 3 It’s actually available on retail shelves (unlike the OEM pedals), and it’s only $20.
FINAL VERDICT: 4 out of 5 stars
