Thermalright SLK-800U Heatsink Review

Thermalright has been a producer of high-quality copper heatsinks for quite a few years. Greater heat generation of the latest processors has resulted in the need for larger, heavier coolers to eliminate this heat. These high-performance cooling chameleons are targeted towards the enthusiast market, who generally upgrade frequently and switch between Intel and Athlon processors. In the past, this customer had to choose between an expensive Intel-only or Athlon-only solution, as Thermalright’s sibling product, the SLK-800. The SLK-800U is a cross-platform solution that can be used in either situation , ensuring extended life in your investment even when upgrading.

This is one heavy hunk o’ metal! This is basically an SLK800 with more flexible mounting hardware, which include additional clips, standoffs and screws. Previous models depended on fastening the product to the plastic ZIF socket, putting a tremendous amount of stress on plastic pieces that sometimes would break off. The new mounting method is much more involved but is also much more secure and stable.

What’s in the box

The small brown cardboard box ships double-packed inside another box and snugly surrounded by an ample supply of foam peanuts. Thermalright has included all the little goodies you will need for installation in any situation, all in one little box. In addition to the heatsink itself are 2 sets of differently-sized fan clips, 4 P4 mounting spring-screws, a padded P4 mounting backplate, 2 P4 mounting clips. 2 AMD mounting clips, a baggie of assorted screws, and a small syringe of generic thermal compound. It is puzzling that no instructions are included, considering how complicated the installation is. The instructions can be viewed on Thermalright’s website. The P4 installation is very complicated and instructions are necessary. Intel installation is not as complicated, but instructions would still be nice.

Thermalright’s design has varied little since their first heatsink. Thin copper fins are soldered onto a smaller copper base. The fins’ width flare out as the height increases, making sure motherboard components around the processor have enough clearance. The ridge of each fin is shaped like a stairstep to accommodate different sized fans (60, 70, and 80mm). A black metal shroud adorns with 4 mounting holes surround the base of the sink. This shroud is what the mounting hardware comes in contact with, and has been designed for different mounting options (more on that later).

Thirty-five cooling fins are soldered to the base, and the edges of each fin are folded over onto each other to prevent bending. Each fin houses 6 symmertrical holes, intended for the fan mounting clips. The size fan you choose to crown your copper king determines which set of holes used to fasten it.

The base looks very smooth but one can feel ridges on the base; possibly a result of soldering these fins to the block. Lapping the base to a mirror finish may improve performance. The fins hang over the small base, allowing an extra amount of airflow to reach the CPU components.

AMD cores are rather venerable, and a really heavy sink such as this requires preventative measures. Thermalright has included four cushioned pads to be placed on the corners of the processor, to prevent clipping a chip off the processor core. Installation of these pads are highly recommended even though this sink’s installation is the most protective of any other.

AMD installation requires an X-bracket on the underside of the motherboard. Two sets of four screws and a set of brass standoffs are then attached through holes to affix the sink to this bracket. The screws are spring-loaded and tighten the grip on the heatsink as they are secured to the underside backplate. This method offers more stability and virtually eliminates wobble, but also makes the installation semi-permanent. Upgrading to another heatsink will require removing the motherboard from the case to retrieve the bracket. Be wary of case size, as this may interfere with motherboard components or hit the side of your power supply.

Pentium 4 installation

The Intel installation is much simpler. You can use the AMD installation method on an Intel motherboard, but why go through all that trouble? The installation is almost the same as any other Pentium4 heatsink. Place the sink on the processor core, affix the included clips to the base, and then fasten the edges of the clips to the motherboard’s retention housing.

Testing

Now that the cooler is installed, we can finally see how it performs. Testing will be performed on both AMD and Intel machines, and will be compared with another popular copper sink, the Zalman CNPS7000. Temperatures are measured using thermal sensors on the motherboard at idle and full load. Load was synthesized under SiSoft Sandra’s Burn-in wizard for 20 minutes. The included generic thermal paste was used for testing, but you may achieve higher performance using higher quality silver compound.

From the charts it can be seen that the SLK-800U performs better than other copper heatsinks. The SLK-800U performs similarly to its sister product, the SLK-800, which is an Athlon-only product. A standard 80mm LCD fan was used on the SLK-800U and produces very little noise. The extra weight of this heatsink apparently keeps the idle and load temps closer together than other lighter sinks. Most users will use a standard 80mm case fan and should have no problems.

Conclusion

Dual installation possibilities give this cooler a big advantage, as it will work with the most popular processors on the market. It performs really well no matter what your PC’s architecture, but one must be aware that the size of this heatsink may limit installation on some motherboards. No installation instructions are included, and installation is not very intuitive for AMD motherboards. It has the same thermal properties as other pure copper heatsinks, but its sheer weight allows it to edge ahead of lighter competition. The flexibility of using any fan further adds to its value, as you can make it as quiet as possible, or install a hurricane for enhanced performance. This is an excellent choice for aggressive CPU cooling and is a worthwhile purchase.
