As far as the graphics go, they aren’t completely horrible by Wii standards. I wouldn’t call the wilderness you’re in realistic, but it has its moments. There are individual blades of grass, pretty cloud-filled skies, complex trees and lens flares. There were many graphical shortcuts taken to make the foliage look full, and could have been done a lot better.
The gameplay is greatly affected by the horrible engine the game uses. There are a lot of invisible walls, and the collision detection is practically non-existant. Aiming is also a huge sore-spot. There are times when you’ve practically bulls-eyed a critter, and it still scampers around waiting for your next attempt. You reload your weapon by shaking the wiimote (which you do often), but it hardly ever registers, so you have to practically throw your controller against a wall before the game understands what you’re trying to do. Since you also aim with your wiimote, then you cannot maintain an aim while reloading.
I’m all for playing wildlife games. One of my guilty pleasures is a fishing game on the PSP that many others would consider horrible. Virtual hunting and fishing aren’t one of those things that appeal to everyone. They can kill some time, and being whisked away into a digital wilderness temporarially takes your mind off today’s hectic world. Unfortunately you are very consciously aware that you are in a broken reality while playing North American Hunting Extravaganza, because the engine is so shoddy that there is no pleasure to be gained from the experience.
