As I’ve been writing about in other posts, I’ve been squashing various problems when running WordPress on Windows Server 2008.
One of the very last problems I’ve been trying to solve involes the handy “Similar Posts” plugin. Sometimes when this plugin is installed, I’ll get an error about the SQL database. I won’t get this error all the time, so I concluded that it is an unhandled character in the text somewhere. Well, lo and behold I think I’ve finally found the answer!
Similar Posts can be told to handle extended characters. Just go to Settings, and then Similar Posts. Along the top are several links (they’re easy to miss). Click on ‘Manage the Index’ and you’ll see several form items.
Change the drop down ‘Handle extended characters?’ to Yes. It’s optional if you want to set “Treat as Chinese, Korean, or Japanese?” to Yes. After that, I don’t get the error any more.
I’ll have to check, but I think I’ve finally figured out ALL of the issues of running WordPress on IIS7. As I’ve mentioned before, once you get it up and running properly you can run WordPress faster on IIS7 than you can on Linux with comporable hardware.
