snip: The world of video cards has become crowded indeed. In days past, a user looking at a given brand of video card would have three, perhaps four models to choose from, each clearly delineated in terms of price and performance. In case you hadn’t noticed, those days are over. For example, ATI now has at least two dozen separate model numbers to choose from, and by the time you factor in all the possible permutations of each model, such as amount of memory, all-in wonder or not, etc., it’s easy for a user to get horribly confused. The situation is worst in the mid-to-high end market, where there can be literally dozens of choices that fall within a few dollars of each other. The card we’re looking at today is from Powercolor, and is designated the X800 GTO 16. The X800 GTO is based on the X800XL, with the main difference being that four of the chip’s 16 pixel pipelines have been disabled. However, the 16 in the Powercolor card’s name is an indicator that this is not an ordinary GTO. We’re going to find out exactly what this card has going for it, and if it appears to be destined for success.

If you’ve held off buying anything up to just to wait and see how it pans out just before Christmas, or you’ve already splashed out on an ATI Radeon X1800 XT or XL (I’ll come back to that later), or you simply have that car crash curiosity about high-end 3D graphics right now, today’s article will have your interest.
The reason is the release of ATI Radeon X1800 XT Crossfire master boards to market. Radeon X1800 XT Crossfire was always on the cards, bringing the SuperAA and performance acceleration enhancements to that product, but the big question is have the downsides of the first generation of Crossfire been eliminated? Doth It Suck™ as much as it did with X850?

ATI’s first attempt at the Crossfire platform was a somewhat abortive. The dual graphics solution was beset with delays which, upon its eventual testing, only lent to further highlight it shortcomings, such as being based on a Shader Model 2 platform (when their Shader Model 3.0 solution where expected to be just around the corner) and having a resolution limit of 1600×1200 @ 60Hz. The reality of the launch of the initial Crossfire solution, although it was missed by many, was not really about the graphics solutions, but the platform. However, despite the issues one thing did come out of it – the performance gains for Crossfire were tangible.
Now that ATI have fully released the X1000 series they are taking a second stab at the dual graphics Crossfire solution, with the aim to resolving some of the previous implementation’s issues. With the X1000 series ATI are taking a dual pronged approach; at the high end they are maintaining the specialised “master card” solution that can be mated with an existing board, while at the lower segments they are relying on two standard boards with inter-board communication occurring via the PCI Express interface with the host platform.”

The card I’m displaying off today is last years generation based on ATi’s RADEON X800 XL (R430) — both core and design wise. The price you have to pay however is not $599. It’s not even $399, $299 or $199. You can get a rebranded X800 XL for as low as $179. So you’re scratching your head and thinking where is the catch?
