When the capacity of a flash drive just isn’t enough, you can purchase an external drive enclosure and use a drive with a bog-standard interface within it, all thanks to nifty IDE to USB/Firewire bridging chips, or the not-yet-as-popular eSATA interface. There are numerous flavours of drive enclosure on the market now. Some are NAS wannabes, others cheap as chips 3.5″ disk enclosures, and then some slightly more specialist offerings.
Today we’re taking a look at two enclosures from Ultra. One is a 3.5″ enclosure with USB and Firewire – one which would go up well against the Icy Box, which we reviewed some time ago. The second is a slimmer model for 2.5″ laptop drives with just a USB interface.

When it comes to women and digital cameras, recent research from imaging industry market research company Lyra reveals that Kodak really pushes their buttons. The Digital Photography survey showed that more than 20% of women use Kodak cameras while only 10% of men choose to use the brand. The most popular camera manufacturer among the male of the species is Canon, with 17% of men using that brand, followed by Sony. Lyra’s president and director of the Digital Photography Advisory Service, Charles LeCompte, explains the findings: “The explanation is that women in general are less comfortable with technology and therefore are more attracted to trusted brands.” So ladies, dump your D-SLRs and pick up an EasyShare!

Kodak has today issued a press release which reveals a little more information about the sensor used in Pentax’s yet to be fully revealed 645 medium-format digital camera. The sensor is named the KAF-18000CE, it has 18.6 million total pixels producing an 18 million pixel final image. Pixel pitch is 9 x 9 µm, no other specs are currently available but if we assume a 4:3 aspect ratio we can guess the total pixel size to be something like 4992 x 3744 which would make the active sensor area approximately 45 x 34 mm (a 1.3x FOV crop for a 645 medium format camera).

Nikon has announced that further batch numbers of the rechargeable lithium ion EN-EL3 batteries used in the D50, D70, D70s and D100 are being recalled. Some batteries may be defective and can overheat while being charged. All owners of Nikon cameras that use this battery are asked to carefully recheck their batteries with the new batch numbers which are listed on the next page. Faulty batteries will be replaced free of charge.

Sigma confirm issue with Nikon D200

Sigma has confirmed that there is an incompatibility issue between its HSM equipped lenses and the new Nikon D200. Specifically the HSM lenses do not operate when the ‘AF-ON’ button is pressed on the rear of the camera. This does not affect auto-focus carried out using the shutter release button (half-press). Sigma has stated that this is due to a firmware bug in the lens itself and will soon be introducing a free of charge firmware update for affected lenses.
