OpenMoko offers open-source smart phone

We don’t normally cover smart phones here at TR, but OpenMoko is showing an interesting device at CES that could really open up the platform. OpenMoko was started as a mobile communications group within FIC, and it has developed an open, Linux-based software stack for mobile phones. The stack was developed in part to give smart phones a non-threatening alternative to operating systems from Microsoft and Symbian, which pack steep hardware requirements and expensive licensing fees. OpenMoko also hopes its approach will resonate with open-source developers eager to take on a new platform and those who have been unimpressed with the inflexibility of current smart phones.

Sennheiser has re-invented the ear bud with their “Twist to Fit” design found in the MX 90VC. Rather than just letting the ear bud rest on the bottom of the ear, the MX 90VC has an extension above the bud piece, topped with a rubber wheel, that wedges the earpiece into the ear. The earpiece is inserted at an angle and twisted while in place, causing the wheel to roll along the upper edge of the inner fold of the ear, wedging the driver into place. ”

ANOTHER YEAR HAS COME AND GONE, leaving a trail of phenomenal new hardware, disturbing and annoying trends, and disappointing flops and no-shows in its wake. All told, 2006 was a great year for PC enthusiasts, and a very busy one for us. An almost endless stream of new hardware passed through our labs, and most of it was pretty good. We also got to see dual-core processors really come into their own, Intel bounce back from the horrendous NetBurst era, and Nvidia shock the world with a unified shader architecture. Somewhere in the middle of all that, AMD surprised everyone by acquiring ATI.
Of course, 2006 was also dotted with events and trends that we’d just as soon forget. For every engineer working overtime on an innovative new product, there seemed to be at least one PR rep blowing smoke, one marketing team spinning hype, and one product manager making a poor design decision.
To send 2006 off in style, we’ve singled out the best enthusiast-oriented products of the year for our Best Hardware of 2006 awards. We’ve also whipped up a selection of unique awards to recognize some of the year’s most interesting innovations and annoying trends. And there were plenty of each. Back in late October of 2006, VIZO Technology Corp and their product development team released a product which many would consider past-due: a self-contained liquid cooled CPU heatsink and fan. That’s right, an all-in-one CPU cooler which has an integrated water-cooling pump, reservoir, and fan, and manages to consume no more space than the average aftermarket cooler. VIZO even beat all of the others to the market, but since they are a relatively small name in the advertising-fueled industry, their product went nearly unnoticed. Even major web technology tabloids made the mistake of awarding a product released over a month later as the first; but forgetting to inquire upon the facts is not uncommon for web tabloids.
