Will Windows Vista finally sell well?
Maxit Mag :: Saturday, January 05, 2008
When Microsoft’s benefits for the third quarter were made available to the public, it was suspicious the lack of information regarding their flagship Operating System. Halo 3 record-breaking sellings were previously known, but about Windows Vista…. not a word. It seemed as if they wanted people to assume that, being their primary product, it should have helped to the overall figures. Some sites even swallowed the bait and pointed to it as one of the products responsible for the increase. Nothing more far from the truth. The Inquirer (http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2007/10/29/vista-sales-slow) disclosed those benefit numbers from Microsoft, and it became evident than Vista was selling less and less copies as time went by: 60 millions for the first quarter, 30 for the second and 28 for the third. Now that the fourth is over, it’s time to see some gains here, but you never know. On the one hand, the Christmas season should help, but on the other hand there’s still a lot of people waiting for SP1.

Inspect Your PC For Software With Security Flaws
PC Mechanic :: Saturday, January 05, 2008
One thing we all know we should do, but is very hard to, practically, is make sure the software installed on our PC’s is as secure as possible. Again, while this is a great idea, having to keep up with all your installed programs, OS patches, browser plugins, etc. is quite daunting. Instead, use Secunia’s […]

Scythe Ninja Copper Anniversary Model CPU Cooler
Dragonsteel Mods :: Saturday, January 05, 2008
Today we’ve got another CPU cooler up on the review block, been doing a lot of those lately, and I just got another one in for review yesterday… Anyway, the cooler I have for review today is one that many people have been talking about all over the internet, it’s one that those same people and others have been waiting for its’ arrival with baited breath and sweet anticipation, it’s the Scythe Ninja Copper Anniversary Model CPU Cooler, and yeah… it’s all that! So, I don’t think anymore introduction is needed…. hit it.

For The College Students: What Works and What Doesn’t When Trying To Get a Tech Job?
PC Mechanic :: Saturday, January 05, 2008
As a guy who played the white-collar game for quite a few years, here’s my bits of advice for any college student studying tech that wants to find work when they graduate. This is assuming your college job placement program isn’t as great as they said it was. (heh) This is stuff you will never learn in […]

Desktop CPU Comparison Guide
Tech ARP :: Friday, January 04, 2008
There are so many CPU models that it has become quite impossible to keep up with the different models or even remember their specifications.

Therefore, we decided to compile this guide to provide an easy reference for those who are interested in comparing the specifications of the various desktop CPUs in the market, as well as those already obsolescent or obsolete.

Currently covering over 620 desktop CPUs, this comprehensive comparison will allow you to easily compare up to 18 different specifications for each and every CPU.

Interview with Giuseppe Amato, AMD Technical Director sales and marketing EMEA
Driver Heaven :: Friday, January 04, 2008
Since the release of the Core 2 Duo platform Intel has been doing really well in the enthusiast and mobile processor market. Do you see yourself creating a killer product in the near future that could do the same for you?

Giuseppe: In the mobile space AMD had a very strong 2007 and we have our sights set even higher for 2008 with the release of the Puma platform in 1H 2008. Puma will raise the bar in platform performance per watt with more visual computing performance than any other mobile platform.

In the desktop segment we will continue to work to increase the frequency and performance of Phenom but the focus is really on the platform proposition. While our competitor would prefer to keep the performance argument on CPU Ghz we would challenge users to look at the complete picture with technologies like CrossFireX that allow you to significantly scale enthusiast gaming performance for an incremental GPU investment. While the CPU is an important part of the equation the GPU is really what defines the experience in the high-resolution HD gaming world.

Vizo Voyager Review
XS Reviews :: Friday, January 04, 2008
“Vizo pride themselves on making efficient, economical and stylish cooling and storage products. Today, I have something that fits into the former of those categories, the Vizo Voyager. It’s designed to straddle your HDD and keep it chilled with 2 small fans. Is it up to the task? Let’s find out.”

NZXT Rogue Super Cube
Technic 3d :: Friday, January 04, 2008
“The NZXT Rogue Super Cube is the next PC Case in the Technic3D Editorship. The Gamingcube is equipped with three120mm fans (running at low speeds) and have installed rubber padding near hard drives to further reduce the sound level. This NZXT also ships with USB 2.0, eSATA, and audio support. See you in the following Review which qualities the new Rogue Super Cube Gamer Case presents.”

Thermalright Ultima 90 CPU Cooler Reviewed
Dragonsteel Mods :: Friday, January 04, 2008
Thermalright is a well known provider of quality thermal products and it’s been awhile since we’ve taken a look at any Thermalright CPU Coolers here at DragonSteelMods so I’m happy to be bringing you the Ultima 90 for review today. The Ultima 90 is a now familiar heatpipe style CPU cooler, but what makes the Ultima 90 special is its size, compared to most other tower heatpipe coolers out there today this thing is tiny. So with this review I can finally answer the age old question: Does size matter?

BFG Tech 800 Watt Power Supply Review
Hardware Logic :: Friday, January 04, 2008
If you have never heard of BFG technologies, you have probably been living under a rock (which is good, we all need to get outdoors more often). BFG is a privately held US based company best known for their NVIDIA and Ageia based graphics cards. As one might expect, they are a gamer focused company (their slogan is “The Gamer’s Choice!”). Graphic cards are not their only product however, and BFG carries a product line ranging from mousepads to motherboards, and in a place in between, they also carry power supplies.

Today we get a chance to check out one of BFG’s PSUs in the form of an 800 watt unit. BFG technologies touts its 800 watt power supply as perfect for a “…gamer running dual PCI Express graphics cards, or a PC enthusiast building a killer system with tons of power-hungry components.” They back that with a lifetime 24/7 warranty. Among the features of the BFG 800 watt PSU are quad 12V rails and “Silent Control Technology” for quiet operation. Does this 800 watt monster represent? Let’s find out!

OCZ ReaperX DDR2-800 4GB & Kingston Hyper X DDR2-1066 2GB
Driver Heaven :: Friday, January 04, 2008
The DDR2 memory market currently has two major options for consumers using the latest CPUs. Consumers can either go for 2 GB kits of speeds up to 1066MHz, which are priced quite reasonably or 4 GB kits of DDR2-800 with tighter timings. What difference does this make to the latest CPUs and which option should the consumer go for when seeking the best performance?

ASUS M3A32-MVP Deluxe motherboard review
TechSpot :: Friday, January 04, 2008
After a longer than anticipated delay the new Phenom processors saw the public light last November, but unfortunately for AMD not even then things got back to plan. Put in simple terms, instead of getting a full pack of competitive products, we only got two moderately clocked Phenom processors (9500 and 9600) that are characterized for offering quad-core processing on a budget rather than outpacing competing Intel Core 2s.

As part of the Phenom launch, AMD also unveiled a new platform (used by the ASUS M3A32-MVP we are testing today) built around the AMD 790FX chipset and the semi-new socket AM2+. This new platform still uses DDR2 memory but adds HyperTransport 3.0 support and split power lanes (which benefits power savings). The socket AM2+ is backwards compatible with Athlon X2s and Semprons, so it can serve as a middle platform if you can’t upgrade CPU and motherboard all at once.

Revoltec Rhodium reviewed
Burnout PC :: Friday, January 04, 2008
“The Rhodium looks stunning, the blue led in the front illuminating the entire door looks really cool. The paint finish is tough enough to withstand some heavy using and although it doesn’t stand out in size, it’s still a large enough case to fill it with lots of hardware. In the end, this case looks great, but don’t expect to remove a dvd drive within a few seconds. Better get your toolkit out and start removing that front bezel again.”

Glacialtech Igloo 5750 Silent Heatsink Review
FrostyTech :: Friday, January 04, 2008
“In this review Frostytech is evaluating the new Glacialtech Igloo 5750 Silent heatsink, a quiet little cooler with double fans and a single power cord for your convenience. This cooler is compatible with socket 775 Intel processors and the full range of AMD K8 CPU’s. Made by Taiwanese heatsink manufacturer Glacialtech, the Igloo 5750 Silent is first and foremost a low noise heatsink – so don’t let its dual 92mm fans fool you into thinking otherwise.”

Silentmaxx Frostbite CPU Cooler Review
RB Mods :: Thursday, January 03, 2008
CPU coolers come in all shapes and sizes, many with very intricate designs. However, sometimes a computer doesn’t need a fancy cooling setup when a simpler yet effective solution might do. AcousticPC.com, a great online retailer of a variety of quiet performance computer products, sent us a sample of one of their popular CPU coolers, the Silentmaxx Frostbite CPU Cooler, which has a simple design package but promises respectable cooling performance nonetheless. Will this vertical cooler perform well compared to horizontal coolers? We will attempt to answer that question in this review.

Noctua NT-H1 Thermal Compound Review
Dragonsteel Mods :: Thursday, January 03, 2008
“There are so many companies out there now making their own thermal compounds now, most every company that makes a CPU cooler now has their very own thermal compound to go with it. Is that a bad thing? Not really, but how does a person know which one is really the best choice where the choices are so many? Well that’s why there are sites like this one to help people make informed decisions by throughly testing these products and comparing them to the other leading brands out there.

I just reviewed the Noctua NH-U12P CPU cooler and with it came a small sample of their new NT-H1 thermal compound, they also sent me a full tube as well to test for review purposes. It just so happened I was also in process of doing a thermal paste round-up comparison when this arrived for review so the timing was great to get a good comparison of the NT-H1 against the four others I’d already tested so far. So continue on to learn more about the new Noctua NT-H1 thermal compound and see how it compares to the leading brands out there today… ”

In-Win Allure MicroATX Designer Case Review
Madshrimps :: Thursday, January 03, 2008
“In-Win has a flashy microATX in their product lineup, the Allure comes in white color with fancy flower pattern and small footprint. Designed to blend in with its environment will certainly please the ladies. Let’s take a closer look”

AMD’s Phenom 9900 / 9600 Black Edition: Beyond Erratum 298
Lost Circuits :: Thursday, January 03, 2008
AMD’s release of the Phenom processor along with the Spider platform was not exactly a head turner. Well, maybe the other way. There has been a lot of confusion, benchmarks chasing each other, whether they were relevant or not and by the end of the day, the entire platform is still a mystery. We took the current flagship edition, that is, the Phenom 9900 and pitted it against the Phenom 9600 Black Edition with the lower speed NorthBridge. We ran AOD and different memory frequencies and then compared the results with whatever competition is out there. We also did some more research into Erratum 298 and the bug it describes along with possible scenarios where it can occur and the workaround solution a.k.a. patch that could be worse than the bug itself. And that is not just in terms of performance.

OCZ PC2-6400 Titanium CL3 Edition Review
Club OC :: Thursday, January 03, 2008
It is hard to believe that DDR2 has been out for over four years now, and with the introduction of DDR3 within the last six months, it would seem that DDR2 is starting to become passé. However, with the high cost of DDR3 and the lack of available DDR3 platforms for AMD, DDR2 still has plenty of life left.

OCZ aims to show us what capabilities DDR2 can still present to us with their new Titanium sticks, the CL3 edition. So what makes this set of DDR2-800 special? How does CAS 3 sound?

GlacialTech Igloo 5750 PWM and Silent CPU Coolers Reviewed
Dragonsteel Mods :: Thursday, January 03, 2008
“Not long ago we took a look at a couple GlacialTech 5610 Series CPU coolers, they are the smaller sized heatpipe variety and overall they are a decent performing cooling option. Today I’ve got two more CPU coolers from GlacialTech, these are the 5750 Series and they are much larger, offering 4 heatpipes, dual 92mm fans, a choice of silent or PWM versions and they should prove to be a great performer. So continue on to learn more about these CPU coolers… ”

AMD 790FX Phenom Chipset On Linux
Phoronix :: Thursday, January 03, 2008
“Back in November AMD had launched their “Spider platform”, which is made up of AMD’s first quad-core processor, ATI Radeon HD 3800 series graphics, and the AMD 7-Series chipsets. While we were quick to cover the ATI Radeon HD 3850 and 3870 graphics under Linux, today after much testing we are finally delivering our first Linux report from AMD’s new 790FX Chipset. Is the chipset that’s designed for PC enthusiasts and performance seeking overclockers worth anything under Linux? Does this chipset even work with the latest Linux desktop distributions? We’ll be answering these questions and more, as we look at the Gigabyte MA790FX-DS5 motherboard.”

Crucial PC3-12800 DDR3 1600MHz BL2KIT12864BA1608
Benchmark Reviews :: Wednesday, January 02, 2008
DDR3 Memory offers such a high front side bus to overclocker’s that CPU speeds can reach well beyond extreme. Crucial has produced the Ballistix PC3-12800 CL8 BL2KIT12864BA1608 DDR3 1600MHz 2x1GB RAM kit for hardware enthusiasts to take advantage of. Benchmark Reviews has discovered more overclocking headroom in these modules than any other, and put them to the test in this review.

AMD Phenom CPUs
t-break :: Wednesday, January 02, 2008
Its a classic Hollywood script- AMD, the underdog, came out of nowhere with the Athlon64 and captured the hearts of the enthusiast and a reasonable market share from the 800lbs gorilla that Intel is. Not only did AMD do well on the desktop but even their server based Opteron CPU started eroding Intel’s Xeon’s market share. Unfortunately it wasnt a “Happily Ever After” ending for AMD once the Core 2 was released by Intel over a year go. The Core 2 CPU started taking back the market share AMD had advanced upon during its hay days. All eyes now rested on AMD’s Phenom CPU, however, as you’ve already read in many websites, its too little too late

Xtreme Computing :: Wednesday, January 02, 2008

That, for those of you who didn’t realise, is a case with 1200watts of psu included, that’s not a typo it has 2 psu’s included a 550watt and a 650watt.”

Western Digital 320GB Scorpio 2.5 Inch SATA 3Gbps Hard Drive Review
Big Bruin :: Wednesday, January 02, 2008
The 250GB version of the Western Digital Scorpio 2.5 inch SATA hard drive was reviewed at Bigbruin.com in September 2007, and it made a very positive impression. With an even higher capacity and faster transfer rates, it seems that the newer 320GB version would be destined for even greater accolades.

AMD Phenom 9600: Black Edition
Bjorn 3d :: Wednesday, January 02, 2008
Today, we at Bjorn3D have the pleasure of reviewing the first of the Phenom family of processors to be released for sale to the public sector, the Phenom 9600. This processor will be sold in two versions; the Standard Edition with a multiplier locked above its 11.5X standard and the Black Edition which has a completely unlocked multiplier. Our review will be conducted using the Black Edition and for added flavor we’ll include benchmarks and statistics from the Phenom 9900 engineering sample AMD was kind enough to include.
