It’s summer time — the season known for longer days, high temperatures, skimpy clothes, and heaps of air conditioning. For computer enthusiasts, it is the season to make sure their PC hardware — CPU, chipset, and video card are being adequately cooled. Regretfully, other components are often overlooked, namely the hard drive, which can get surprisingly hot. An overheated hard drive could potentially suffer from degraded performance, shortened life, or, in extreme cases, total failure.

There has been much anticipation about the release of the Intel i875P chipset; speed alone will make the Canterwood chipset one of the most heavily demanded in a long time. Chaintech’s Zenith 9CJS, its latest Pentium 4 motherboard, takes advantage of this newest chipset. For those not familiar with the Zenith line of Chaintech products, these are the high end models. You will spend a few extra dollars, that’s pretty much a given, but you get your money’s worth. The Apogee line is the Chaintech mid-range, and the Summit the low-end. The motherboard we’re looking at here, of course, is from the Zenith line, the Zenith 9CJS.

“Our multimeter readings were consistently greater than both spec and MBM average, and they remained within the ±4% (for 3.3V) and ±5% (for 12V and 5V) ranges. Ideally these readings should be as close to 12V, 3.3V, and 5V as possible, but in the real world this usually isn’t the case. From an overclocker’s POV, it’s better to have higher power rails than lower to provide better voltage to components, and the EG-365P does exactly so.”

Processors are in a group called the “hot mofo’s.” They usually have the highest heat output of any computer component. For years we have been battling this heat with giant heatsinks and noisy fans. Recently water cooling has come out of the underground and has become a lot more mainstream than we all thought. You can buy complete water cooling kits without having to worry about leaks or other nuisances. The only downside I see is the price. A good kit can cost you over 200 bucks easily. Fortunately there are companies out there that are selling kits for under $100. Of course these kits most likely won’t be great performers, but they are good for those seeking quiet cooling solutions or someone just trying to get their feet wet. ExoticPC / ColorCase was kind enough to send us the Iceberg 1 water cooling kit from Ahanix. This is a very cheap kit, but how does it perform?

This case offers many sought after base-line features, such as an included 300-Watt power supply, a removeable motherboard tray, pre-installed case window with a 4 LED fan, front mounted media ports, and room for pleny of cooling fans. It does however lack a few “luxury” features, such as thumbscrews, modular drive bays, intake fan filters, and the inclusion of more than one cooling fan.

In an effort to build on to its success, OCZ has put out a “Platinum” version of their PC3200 RAM. The difference is, the Platinum version sports, as they phrase it, “hand picked” 4.5ns OCZ memory chips. I’m not exactly sure what hand picked means since the only hand picking I can do is with apples.

Noise. Heat. Both enemies of the personal computer. As a solution, modification devices like rheobuses and baybuses entered into the computer community. Their popularity rose as more and more users saw the usefulness of having a device that would allow them to control fan speed, which, to some extent, allowed them to control noise levels and the amount of heat building up inside the PC. As the majority of our readers probably know, a baybus has 3 settings – 12V, 7V, and Off. A rheobus, on the other hand, offers virtually infinite settings by using variable resistors.

“Some other things to keep in mind with a case like this is that you need to use the screws they provide for the fans, motherboards, drives, etc. because the panels on this case are much thicker then what you will find on any metal case, and therefore the screws are longer.

While installing the rheobus and CD-ROM drive I realized that the screws provided for that purpose are just long enough. What does that mean? Well, the space for the drive is a little wider (about 1/8”) then what is needed. If you screw in one side all the way so that the drive is snug against the panel, then the screw on the other side will not reach the drive. So you need to leave the first screw a little loose so that you can get the other side in and then tighten them up. If those screws were about 1/8” longer, this would not be an issue.”

We have probably all heard about Bluetooth sometime right?! Well today we are rewieving some Bluetooth dongles from X-Micro. These dongles can be used to connect to your cellphone, PDA, laptop etc etc. They are really small also and easy to use but do they really work?!
