Last month I told you about some myths that have grown up around security, but that are not necessarily things you should believe. This month it’s time for things you really do need to believe in and act upon if you’re to stay out of trouble. Instead of myths, they’re the “musts”: security actions you must take regardless of the size of your enterprise or your network.

The Rewards And Perils Of Meshing With Wi-Fi
Network Computing :: Sunday, December 04, 2005
Wireless mesh networks have been a popular idea for years. Visionaries talk about “smart dust”–tiny radios that organize themselves into networks as needed, bypassing service providers and eliminating the need for wires of any kind. New technologies such as ZigBee aim to extend the range of very-low-power networks by making every network node act as a router.

OCZ Rally Drives
Overclockers Online :: Saturday, December 03, 2005
Quote: I’ve now had these two units for about a month, the ability to drop half a DVD’s worth of content on to the drive in a few minutes is great. The Rally drive’s small form makes carrying the unit a breeze. While it’s certainly possible to find smaller thumb drives, going any smaller brings the risk of breaking the unit or simply losing it. I find the Rally drive to be the perfect size for me to clip onto my carabineer and keys without adding too much weight. The only thing I’ve noticed after a month of use is that the black paint on the Rally drive eventually does scratch off. While it doesn’t affect performance, those who care about aesthetics will want to be a bit more careful and avoid leaving the drive in a pocketful of keys and coins; eventually you’d be left with a logo-less aluminum casing.

AVC Z7UB301 ‘AMD Reference’ Athlon64 Heatsink Review
Frosty Tech :: Saturday, December 03, 2005
“The AVC Z7UB301 heatsink is one of the first stock Socket 754 heatsinks AMD shiped with its processors, and it is currently used with most Socket 939 Athlon64 CPU models too. While its name lacks any mention of ‘extreme,’ ‘whisper,’ ‘ultimate,’ or some other such stereotypical marketing sloganry… it is a damn fine heatsink. That, in spite of its complex alpha-numeric ‘Z7UB301001’ nomenclature. Asia Vital Corporation (AVC) itself is one the largest heatsink manufacturers in the industry, but primarily so in an OEM capacity. The company produces several models of stock Intel and AMD heatsinks, in addition to a variety of after market models.”
SANSUN SN-C001 BAT Enclosure Review
TweakTown :: Saturday, December 03, 2005
QUOTE: “Whether you’ve heard the character referred to as the Dark Night, the Caped Crusader, or even something entirely off the wall, the concept behind this design is more than a little obvious. Coming out just after the release of the latest movie, the BAT enclosure is based on the popular DC Comics here, Batman. The masked face is currently available in three color choices of red, blue and white. The eyes are LED lighted and have a semi-bright glow in the dark. The black area at the base of the front bezel, where you would imagine is the mouth, is actually a plastic covering over a vented area to allow for air circulation inside the case.”
Dates announced for Matsushita and Olympus D-SLR
DPReview :: Saturday, December 03, 2005

The Japanese companies are working jointly in developing products and key components, but will market products under their own brands, which for Matsushita includes Panasonic. A joint statement says that Olympus and Matsushita are responding to what they see as a soaring global demand for digital SLRs, with shipments expected to reach 5.5m units in the year to 2007, from 2.7m in the current year to March 2005.
PimpRig Review // Thermaltake Big Typhoon (CL-P0114) CPU Cooler
PimpRig :: Saturday, December 03, 2005
The Thermaltake Big Typhoon has managed to usurp the Zalman 9500 from it’s relatively short reign as performance king. Here is a snip from the review: “I couldn’t decide if the Big Typhoon looked more like an insect or a work of art. The copper heatsink fins and 120mm fan are elevated and rest on top of 6 heatpipes that are in turn attached to a copper block at the bottom. The fan has a shroud around the base so that all the air is forced through the fins to cool the heatpipes. The look isn’t as striking as the Zalman CNPS9500, but will still cause a double-take just due to the size alone.”
