Network Computing turns in a long feature looking at tools that help troubleshoot and monitor Wi-Fi networks’ health by examining the radio frequency space they operate in: The monitoring space is very hot; I’m asked all the time to be briefed on the latest product or product revision. I’ve demurred because Wi-Fi Networking News lacks an RF testing environment. The folks at Network Computing show how to examine the field. They look at a dozen products from several manufacturers, only some of which directly overlap by function.
The reviews sort products into spectrum analyzers, calibration tools (just a single entry), wireless protocol analyzers, site surveying tools, and performance and security evaluators. Spectrum analyzers look at the RF patterns and are typically intended for more sophisticated users and uses; protocol analyzers deconstruct data into known patterns to see how the airspace is being used by data devices. A spectrum tool can show if a microwave oven is disrupting your network or an errant cordless phone, while a protocol tool will let you see how 15 networks on the same channel in a small space are producing throughput degradation.

Unless you’ve been in a cave for the last decade, you already know that audio is rapidly steamrolling toward multichannel forms. Evidence is abundant on both the software and hardware fronts. These days, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a modern movie in stereo on any medium outside of television. Music probably has years to go before its stereo form becomes esoteric, but the writing may be on the wall. As for hardware, try finding any electronics that don’t support some multichannel form or another—if not several—anywhere but the smallest specialty shelves. Whether stereophiles like it or not, multichannel is as embedded in audio’s future as digital coding itself.

All you have to do is place the tiffs in your layout and send it all off to XYZ Printers, with a reminder on the RGB status. They’re the experts when it comes to doing color separations, and of course, you want your color to be the best it can be. Your new client expects it as well. The prepress department down at XYZ Printers has been doing color for a long time, so they really know their stuff, right?

As the sun goes down, however, it becomes harder to capture images without the proper equipment and techniques. Thus, as was mentioned in Part I of this series*, taking incredible nighttime photographs requires a lot of planning
When your digital camera receives less light, it cannot absorb the surroundings as well in the resulting photographs. Some pictures may turn out too dark. Others can be too blurry. Your camera requires more time to absorb enough light to create an effective picture, so any shaking of the device will result in photographs lacking sharpness.

Whilst most designers slave away with little recognition, other than our clients cheque or the occasional award, there are some designers that have gained international fame for their work. Are we bitter and twisted? Well… possibly. But to show that we harbour no hard feelings, we focus on some of them here.
In all seriousness, few of these designers are celebrities, in the normal sense of the word – certainly outside of the design community (with the possible exception of Jonathan Ives – Apple’s designer of the iPod and the recent iMacs). And most of these designers have become famous for the influence of their work, rather than as the result of any kind of personality cult.

I am banned from Google…Help! What did you do to get banned? Can you get un-banned? Yes! But first you need to know what you did to get banned. Google will not tell you.
A sure sign you have been banned is that your web site is missing a page rank. By, that I mean the PR bar is Gray. That is usually the first indication. To double check that, enter site:www.yoursite.com into Google. Replace “yoursite.com” with your URL. If it there are no pages indexed, that is a good sign your site has been removed from Google (if your pages were indexed beforehand). Also try link:www.yoursite.com to see if your back links are still listed on Google. If your site is banned they will be removed as well.

When you live with something or somebody long enough (no matter how good the body—or how great the personality), it’s all too easy to become complacent about how well off you are. That thought came to mind the other night when I was watching, of all things, The Blues Brothers. I had forgotten how great the music is in that movie. But then I noticed that part of what had made me rediscover my appreciation for the movie was the truly nice Triad Silver speaker system I had been living with for a little while but had stopped noticing.

LONDON — Though still a niche market, broadband networking over power lines — whether in the home or in the wider area — could turn out to be a major revenue earner for power utilities, according to a just published report form ABI Research. The researchers say BPL has the general blessing of governments and a reservoir of underdeveloped markets in eastern Europe, China, India and other regions lacking a well-developed communications infrastructure. But, according to Vamsi Sistla, ABI Research’s director of broadband, digital home and media, BPL could also benefit legacy businesses such as power utilities in the industrialized world.

The airport authority’s IT director misspeaks, however, when he says such a capability is rare in a ground-up airport Wi-Fi network: “It is uncommon for a network to be designed from the ground up to service both public and private needs.”

This is an interesting time for display manufacturers. On the one hand, the HD and flat-panel revolutions have energized the market. People are truly excited to buy TVs again.
