“When I first picked up the WARRIOR XXTREME gamepad, I was surprised at how solid and heavy it felt, despite its slim profile. I simply don’t often find that kind of construction in any keyboard, even high end ones. This gamepad does not flex or warp – perfect for all those rough gamers. The outside of the keyboard is covered in rubber, while the surface sports a high-gloss paint job. The keys are matte, and are a cross between laptop and full-size desktop keys – a good cross between portability and usability. The upper buttons offer volume control, a Windows button, and a backlight switch that glistens like shiny chrome. Also in this key group is a K-Lock, which is designed to lock the “push to talk” key in games, and allows for continuous communication while gaming – very cool.”

Every Digital IXUS we’ve ever used (we’re still using the Digital IXUS 950 IS) has been a dream to use and produced excellent shots with minimal fuss. The Digital IXUS 90 IS is no different, and although there’s no ground-breaking photographic innovation the build quality is second to none and image quality (both stills and videos) is well above par – images are crisp and colours are accurate, at least at low ISO modes. The only big disappointment is that Canon skimps on memory, providing an almost good for nothing 32MB card. Still, flash memory is cheap these days and you can pick up a good 2GB card for under £10.”

I found the audio quality with a generic MP3 player (it won’t work with my iPhone) to be good, though volume was low compared to normal radio stations. I did find that the AudiaX DGT-301 FM Transmitter is very sensitive to where it is in regards to the radio. If I moved the transmitter literally an inch further from the radio interference was introduced. With proper positioning though there was no feedback or interference in the audio.”

Panasonic has launched a Wi-Fi compatible digital camera, the TZ50, that comes with a year’s free use of T-Mobile’s Hotspot service in the US. The TZ50 is, essentially a TZ5 with Wi-Fi but the new tie-up allows users to upload to their Picasa Web Albums while out and about. There is no word yet on a similar tie-up or camera for European customers.

Asus created a whole new class of budget sub-notebooks when it launched the Eee PC late last year. Since its launch, the Eee has been so popular that the likes of MSI, Gigabyte, HP, and even Dell are scrambling to come up with their own take on the formula. The formula, of course, combines relatively low-end hardware that’s fast enough for basic tasks with an ultra-portable sub-notebook form factor that’s much smaller than other budget notebooks. These systems come pre-loaded with Linux and free software to keep costs down, allowing Asus to sell the standard Eee PC 4G for only $400.
The marriage of true PC functionality with sub-notebook portability at an affordable price makes the Eee PC ideal for a wide range of applications and users. Many folks who have never even heard of alternative operating systems may be turned off by the Eee’s unfamiliar Linux OS, though. The device’s Xandros distribution is by no means difficult to use, and the bundled applications offer all the right functionality. But the alien environment does take some getting used to, especially if you want to be productive.

Canon and Nikon have both announced updated firmware, so we thought we’d bring you an update of updates that have been issued in 2008, just in case you missed them. Canon has issued new firmware for the 40D, following an earlier release for the 30D. Nikon’s D40 also gets a tweak, following updates for the D300 and D80 earlier in the year.

Sigma has announced a series of firmware and software updates for its Foveon-based cameras. The update to its Photo Pro software (for both Mac and Windows), corrects the green tint that could appear at the corner of some DP1 images, it also improves the color reproduction of RAW images from the SD14 DSLR. New firmware for the DP1 adds composition grids for most shooting modes, too.
