“The L.I.S. was wedged so tight in the bay that it wasn’t even necessary to use screws; I don’t think I could pull it out again even if I wanted to. So it’s installed and it looks almost like they color matched the paint with the Chenming, but no LCD is going to run with out software. Software can make or break a product like this. First thing to do is drop the CD in the tray and fire it up; the revision on the CD is 1.3 so I check out V.L. Systems home page and locate the 1.4.8.2 Revision that is out. Always make sure you’re running current drivers and program versions for all your hardware.”

Just by looking at this case, you can tell it is quality. The Antec name stylishly drilled into the side panels, the flawless automotive paint job, the chrome I/O door and buttons, all calling your name, begging you to hear the silence. As you know by now, one of the Sonata’s main selling points is the fact that it emits very little noise. Both the included 120mm fan and the Silent 380W PSU are capable of running under stressed conditions while emitting very little sound. So far this case has looks and low sound emission, let’s see what else Antec has for us…

Its blue, it’s silver, and it pumps out lots of wattage. So that must mean we are reviewing an Enermax 550 watt power supply. With the first look at this power supply you can’t help but to be giddy as a schoolgirl. The power supply is dark blue with a near mirror finish, silver braided cables with a rubber PVC tube around the loom–much like you would see on rounded IDE cables. It’s eye candy for sure. But enough with the eye candy, let’s move on to the specs.

“Looking at the bare specifications and numbers, the X-500 is pretty normal for a mid-tower case of its class. At just under 20″ in height, it’s not too tall, but at the same time, is not too small so that interior space is cramped. Four 5.25″ drive bays compliment its dimensions, along with two external 3.5″ drive bays and four 3.5″ HDD bays. Four 5.25″ drive bays is about right, as you could easily fill all the drive bays and have your needs provided for. A single front 80mm fan provides intake in that area, and with it and the side (window) 80mm fan operating, airflow ought to be balanced pretty well against the two 80mm exhaust fans. Though there are four fan placements, the front intake fan position is empty, and you must provide a fan to go here.”

The cold cathode is no longer a novelty, at least not to the enthusiast crowd. USB drives have came like a rocket into the market suddenly to replace the old floppy disks that always break. These USB drives add size and speed to a tiny little drive that you can carry around in your keychain. It’s easy to use as you basically plug it in, transfer, and then unplug it again. Or if you run an older OS you will have to install some drivers which are available on a cd with the drive itself. I have looked at many USB drives lately but this will be my first USB2 drive. X-Micro were kind enough to send me a 128mb USB2 drive. We are going to see how it performs against a normal USB1.1 drive and how it works in general.

There has been much anticipation about the release of the Intel i875P chipset; speed alone will make the Canterwood chipset one of the most heavily demanded in a long time. Chaintech’s Zenith 9CJS, its latest Pentium 4 motherboard, takes advantage of this newest chipset. For those not familiar with the Zenith line of Chaintech products, these are the high end models. You will spend a few extra dollars, that’s pretty much a given, but you get your money’s worth. The Apogee line is the Chaintech mid-range, and the Summit the low-end. The motherboard we’re looking at here, of course, is from the Zenith line, the Zenith 9CJS.

Processors are in a group called the “hot mofo’s.” They usually have the highest heat output of any computer component. For years we have been battling this heat with giant heatsinks and noisy fans. Recently water cooling has come out of the underground and has become a lot more mainstream than we all thought. You can buy complete water cooling kits without having to worry about leaks or other nuisances. The only downside I see is the price. A good kit can cost you over 200 bucks easily. Fortunately there are companies out there that are selling kits for under $100. Of course these kits most likely won’t be great performers, but they are good for those seeking quiet cooling solutions or someone just trying to get their feet wet. ExoticPC / ColorCase was kind enough to send us the Iceberg 1 water cooling kit from Ahanix. This is a very cheap kit, but how does it perform?

“Some other things to keep in mind with a case like this is that you need to use the screws they provide for the fans, motherboards, drives, etc. because the panels on this case are much thicker then what you will find on any metal case, and therefore the screws are longer.
While installing the rheobus and CD-ROM drive I realized that the screws provided for that purpose are just long enough. What does that mean? Well, the space for the drive is a little wider (about 1/8”) then what is needed. If you screw in one side all the way so that the drive is snug against the panel, then the screw on the other side will not reach the drive. So you need to leave the first screw a little loose so that you can get the other side in and then tighten them up. If those screws were about 1/8” longer, this would not be an issue.”

After getting through the installation of the Sound Selector, actually using it is a walk in the park. Simply connect the speakers to the audio outs on the SS block, connect a pair of headphones to the front audio port, and everything is ready to go. Pressing the Sound Selector button on the front of the case switches between the speakers and the front audio jack. When the front audio jack is in use the Sound Selector button is backlit by a green led, making it easy to tell which audio output is active.

“So I had set up my Microsoft Xbox to test the mat up against DVD playback and in game sound. I first prepared myself to test the lounge factor. I wondered exactly how comfortable the mat was. After my initial sit I was amazed. This thing was not going to make my legs fall asleep or make me get uncomfortable at all, at first at least.
I fired up the Xbox and tossed in Sega GT 2002 and started a race. I turned on the power using the super ergonomic power control. Pyramat did a great job with the volume control / power switch. It is attached to the far right of the I/O panel and has a 2 foot cord that can be neatly packed away in the pouch directly below it. I then adjusted the volume to its max output, underestimating the power of the PM300”

“The Spire BFA07B2 is an AMD recommended heatsink according to the manufacturers website. And from the outset that may seem a little confusing as the BFA07B2 MicroFlow II is basically just a simple aluminum extrusion. Flipping over the heatsink yields a soft copper core inserted into the base which should help improve the thermal efficiency of this small cooler. Based on an older design which did not feature a copper insert, the BFA07B2 can almost be considered a second generation heatsink. The core construction remains the same, but in addition to the copper insert the clip has been modified, and even the fins are shaped differently. Spire have even done something a little different with the power cable coming from the fan. Instead of having three bare wires, they have wrapped the power cord with a white mesh sleeve. Case clutter really isn’t the issue, but presenting a nice tidy image can’t hurt.”
