There are some obvious adaptations, of course. Also, Xeon’s existing 533MHz front side bus isn’t potent enough to compete with Intel’s desktop lineup. Thus, the processor operates on an 800MHz front side bus, yielding a 3.2GHz operating frequency.”

The AMD Athlon64 processor was released in two pin configurations, the first socket 754 and second socket 940. While there are an abundance of socket 754 motherboards making their way to the retail channels ever so slowly, the handful of socket 940 motherboards seem to be taking an even slower route. The Athlon64 FX-51 may be available if you look very closely, but its lifespan is short, and I don’t expect there to be much of a rally behind motherboards which support it in the face of an upcoming socket 939 version.”

Resolutions scale from 800×600 up to the native 1280×1024. First off, a 17″ LCD isn’t the same as a 17″ CRT. The former doesn’t “inflate” specifications but rather provides 17″ of viewing area, whereas the CRT only has 16″ of viewable width. Also, because 17″ is a diagonal measurement, native resolution may vary from screen to screen (you’d be hard pressed to find 1280×1024 on a 17″ widescreen display). And because LCDs are optimized for only one resolution, the rest don’t appear nearly as good. Using a GeForce3 Ti200, 800×600 looked fine. 1024×768 (which is what I switch to when doing Mikhailtech work, as the site is meant to be viewed at 1024+) actually looks really good. If you never saw the native 1280 you couldn’t tell the difference; blur here is almost nonexistent. 1152×864 is incredibly blurry (keep in mind that some of this may also depend on the video card). Because of the physical dimensions of the screen, 1280×768 is too warped to be legible. 1280×720 created an indiscernible image. 1280×960 is a bit distorted and blurred though doable.

Heatronics NCU-1000 heatsink is a remarkably simple device. A 5mm copper baseplate sits below the bottom of the Akachi heatpipe that stretches out in a “U” shape to a total length of about 315mm, and a stainless steel plate sits on the opposite side, held in place with four screws. The Akachi heatpipe, or Heatlane heatpipe as the company are marketing it, then increases its total surface area with the aide of dozens of folded aluminum cooling fins. What goes on inside the Akachi heatpipe is similar to a standard tubular heatpipe, but the technology has a few distinct differences. First of all, where a standard copper heatpipe uses water as a working fluid, this Akachi pipe uses a slightly more exotic hydroflurocarbon-134a (HFC-134A).

One nice feature of this case is that it will accept a standard ATX MB. Once the MB and risers were installed, it is necessary to make sure the PSU power lead would reach the ATX power header due to its non-standard location. All turned out decent in that respect, but it is tight and might interfere with a large HSF if you have a similar MB layout. Although with this being touted for quiet computing, large HSFs shouldn’t be an issue. Next, I laid out the front panel connectors and made sure they were long enough to reach around the PSU to the bottom of the MB. Again everything reached, but in some situations the cables will have to cross the MB which might not be ideal for a killer cable management scheme.”

In the editorial world, when you are faced with carrying around a pack of Zip discs, or one little USB hard drive, the choice is obvious. USB hard drives, like the Crucial Gizmo, simply hold more data, are smaller and more robust, and offer better compatibility. Short of lugging around a laptop with CDRW burner, a USB hard drive of 256MB size is the next best thing when you need to move large amounts of information, and can’t worry about there not being the right kind of drive where you need to go.”

“The single screw in type motherboard standoff is outside of the range of some ATX boards. This lone screw in type standoff locks the board in place once installed. Therefore, there is no way to attach some ATX boards to prevent them from moving when you plug in your peripherals.

What this implies if your board is too short to reach this locking screw is that every time you plug in your monitor, mouse, keyboard, etc. you are sliding the motherboard forward on the slots used to mount the board and you take a chance of the board falling off of the tray. This is not good to say the least.”

While this may be marginally useful if you want to rig up some system with the ability to turn fans on and off independently or use it in conjunction with something like a DigiDoc 5, for the average consumer this just adds a nightmare of wiring issues and confusion.”

I honestly can’t think of a more compelling graphics card purchase in recent times. It fits so many possible scenarios. It’ll play Half Life 2 and Doom 3 when they appear with good performance, it plays all current games titles just fine with IQ enhancing features enabled to boot. The All-In-Wonder hardware and software bundle just top it off. The price is excellent too.

“Let’s be frank about this, who wouldn’t want to have the best equipment in their PC? I’m going to be buying a new car soon and I’d love to get a Porsche… but my budget doesn’t allow that. For the average consumer, most view buying a PC hardware in much the same way – they want the fastest gear, but then reality sets in. So what are the options? Well for one, a motherboard based on the newly introduced Intel i848P chipset could work. The i848P’s feature set is almost identical to that of the i865PE except for one thing, there is only one 64 bit memory controller instead of two. That means the i848P has half the bandwidth of the i865PE at any given time, and is more suitably targeted towards value conscious consumers. Other than that, the feature set of the i848P and i865PE are virtually the same; both have 8x AGP, CSA support, etc. Though i848P’s silicon is physically larger than that of the i845PE, it is the same size as the i865PE chipset.”
