Today at Neoseeker we take a change of pace from the usual reviews and look at the often repeated claim that BIOS reported voltages are very inaccurate. Armed with a multimeter and a group of five boards we set out to debunk or validate these claims with some interesting results.
“At the very worst, our AOpen AK79D had a whopping -10% variance reading the +5V rail under load — that’s half a volt! Soltek’s K8AN2E-GR hit a bullseye with its +12V readings, matching the multimeter to the dot when idling, and being only half a percent lower under load.”

“Studying the 8 pages in English, only the last two and a half pages are of any real use, covering connector pinouts, features and warranty information, but include a hopelessly optimistically titled “troubleshooting” section covering four lines. The rest of the English section seems to be a poorly adapted (and sometimes poorly translated) reworking of the ATX PSU specification, for example: “When AC power is on, the power supply shall be in save mode of operation, and +5VSB” should be within its regular window. When a TTL “L” signal is inserted, the power supply will be enabled. When TTL signal “H” is inserted the power supply will be disabled”. Quite.”

Ultra may be the new kid on the block in the memory world but you wouldn’t guess that if you weren’t told. They have put out a capital product with their low latency PC3200 memory sticks. The tight 2-2-2-5 at DDR400 was expected but reaching DDR550 by loosening the timings was not. There are a number of PC4000 or PC4200 memory products out that can’t handle PC4400 (DDR550) but Ultra is most certainly not one of them.

A few years ago when companies began introducing their pre-modded computer cases, it is safe to say that the majority of the enthusiast community was quite excited to see something unique being brought to the market. These new cases were aimed at the person that did not possess the skills or have the time required to perform tedious case mods. Up until that point, all computer users had available were basic, bland beige (or similar “colored”) cases to store their precious system components. These new cases brought along some attractive and interesting concepts and designs. Aluminum, instead of steel, and high quality construction became the norm. Gradually these wonderful designs began to change. Either the market became flooded with hundreds of pre-modded cases or the manufacturers started taking advantage of the community and began producing rather shameful, mostly steel cases, wrapped in monstrous looking plastic shells.

As mentioned earlier, I set my timings to 2.5-3-3-8-1T. I also lowered the HT multiplier to 3x. At these settings, I was able to get a maximum stable overclock of 9 x 255 (1:1) = 2,295 MHz, or basically 2.3 GHz. I tried lowering the multiplier to 8 and even 7, and also lowering the RAM divisor but was unable to get better results than those obtained at 9 x 255. I also tried various voltage settings, backing down from max as I have read that it can help sometimes. But in my case, I had no luck. I also tried using MSI’s Core Center to increase the CPU voltage over the BIOS maximum but found this program to be buggy and often times lock up the system completely. The system would boot up to 2.4 GHz but was unstable in Prime 95 and Super Pi.

Just recently, courtesy of Raidmax themselves, I found a large package on my doorstep containing one of their latest creations: the Virgo 811, with the new window kit. It arrived in a clearly marked box, with brief rundown of the case’s features on one side, and a list of the box’s contents on another.
