Top Tip: Memory and power supply for my new gaming computer?
Extreme Tech :: Wednesday, September 13, 2006
I just ordered some parts and need some advice on the memory. I can afford $200 to $250. I know I need 2 1gb dual channel sticks for 2Gb total, but the rest, and where to get it, is a mystery.

Watercooled Xbox 360 Laptop Mod
Xbox-Scene :: Tuesday, September 12, 2006
What a fitting news item for the 6 year anniversary of my site. Yes, it’s been 6 whole years since the first incarnation of this site limped onto Geocities and shocked the world with a -gasp- portable Atari 2600. Shortly thereafter I was on the Gamespy network, then in 2004 I bought a domain of my own. It’s been a fun ride and now, for your viewing pleasure, I present the Xbox 360 Laptop!

Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive to cost 199GBP (370USD)
Game Industry Biz :: Tuesday, September 12, 2006
The Premium Xbox 360 won’t benefit from a price cut this Christmas – but instead a HD-DVD and console package is due, spearheading a marketing drive of console bundles available from November.

Retail sources have indicated to GamesIndustry.biz that Microsoft is currently planning to price the standalone HD-DVD drive at GBP 199 (~293EUR or ~370USD), and to package it with two HD-DVD movies. The sources also suggested that Microsoft will bundle the Premium console and next-generation movie player together for under GBP 400 (~589EUR, ~745USD) – and that the price could even be as low as GBP 375 (~552EUR, ~700USD).

It’s expected an official Premium bundle will be made available in early November, with a newly released triple-A third-party title included.

No Microsoft Xbox 360 HDMI Cable
Joystiq :: Tuesday, September 12, 2006
A newly discovered Gamestop and EB Games listing reveals an Xbox 360 HDMI cable, a rather ponderous product considering the fact that the console does not have the necessary port to accomodate such a miraculous transmissive device. Is it an expensive adapter that automagically goes from the bulky 360 AV connector to an HDMI output? Feel free to entertain such a possibility, so long as you remember that Microsoft wants nothing to do with it. After constantly pestering them for a comment, they informed us that the product was not one of theirs and that “Microsoft has not announced any additional support beyond component video for HD output. MS is watching the market closely and they will continue to evaluate any options in the face of consumer demand.”

Joystiq hands-on: Xbox Live Vision camera
Joystiq :: Tuesday, September 12, 2006
A small, plain box arrived unexpectedly from Redmond over the weekend containing nothing more than the diminutive Xbox Live Vision camera floating in a sea of amniotic packing paper. No retail box here, just the tiny little camera and its accompanying PR fact sheet (“Microsoft Corp.’s line of Xbox 360 Authentic Products continues to grow while …”). The sheet does detail the two bundles that will be released on August 19th.

We hurriedly grabbed some snaps before hooking up the Vision to the ol’ 360 and taking it for a spin around the UNO block … where IT happened. We’ve grown (abnormally) accustomed to the sort of blue language one finds while playing outside of the confines of your Xbox Live friends list — this is of course, entirely different than the blue language you enjoy while playing with your friends, but we digress — but it wasn’t ten minutes before we had our first PG-13 exposure. Read on for the entire, sordid tale (with NSFW pictures!).

Sony’s Answer to Xbox Live Lies In Existing Service
Extreme Tech :: Tuesday, September 12, 2006
Microsoft’s Xbox Live has existed since 2002. How will Sony, who has never had a dedicated and successful online program in the console space — the PS2’s online was a total free for all — compete with Microsoft’s nearly four-year lead in the online console gaming service sphere?

The Ship (PC) game review
Driver Heaven :: Tuesday, September 12, 2006
“The Ship brings to the table what the Hitman series failed to deliver – multiplayer assasination. As you can probably imagine the gameplay mechanics had to be changed to accommodate the fact that players would probably notice a strange assassin walking amidst them. Even more importantly, it wouldn’t be much fun for only two players to be the hitman and victim while the rest would be just innocent bystanders. The authors Outerlight countered all of the above with a simple solution: they made everyone the assassin and the victim at the same time.”

Xbox 360 Chameleon Lighting System
Daily CE :: Tuesday, September 12, 2006
“It’s nice to see some innovation happening on a small scale. For the Xbox 360 fans out there, you can make your gaming console look cooler than its old, dull self.”

What To Look For In A Gaming LCD Monitor
Laptop Gamers :: Tuesday, September 12, 2006
You have probably heard it before, but it bears repeating…the best way to know if a computer monitor is right for you is to view it in person. Specs are a great tool for narrowing down your choices, but they are no replacement for hands-on experience. Plenty of large resellers stock a wide range of monitors and some are on display. Go down to every shop you can and see if you can find the monitor you are thinking of buying. You never know, that slightly low spec one you shunned in favour of that extra inch of screen may beat everything else hands down in ‘real world’ performance. This is a check list of things to consider when shopping for a new LCD for gaming.

Gaming on Windows Vista – ATI versus NVIDIA
Legit Reviews :: Tuesday, September 12, 2006
“All of the games that we tried playing, over 12 titles in all, were retail games that we purchased with the most recent patches. In case you are wondering about pirated versions working on Vista we don’t know because ours were legit. The purpose of this article was to see how the drivers from ATI and NVIDIA are doing and they are coming along. Neither are what we would call shipping-caliber as both companies lack a ton of features. The NVIDIA drivers don’t offer overclocking, GPU temperature monitoring, SLI graphics and many other features that I would call required. I’m a gamer and if my games play ~20-30% faster on XP Professional then you wont see me switch operating systems till the DirectX 10 titles come rolling out.”

City Life: PC Game Review
Game Pyre :: Sunday, September 10, 2006
The influx of slightly more micromanagement to a Sim City styled title gives you full control over how the city will grow and mature, yet at the same token, gives the feeling of having to babysit the citizens. To those of us that know how little fun that is, it’s compounded by the frustration of a single tune soundtrack, and visuals done by a mad scientist on a cloning binge. So it comes down to this – gameplay or graphics gamers? If you’re for the former, than City Life is the title for you, if you’re for the latter..!!!

The Settler II – The next Generation Review
Technic 3d :: Sunday, September 10, 2006
“The Game “The Settler II – The next Generation” from Ubisoft comes into the Editorship from Technic3D after that Games Convention 2006. We will clear in this Review: so good how the “old” Settler I ?”

Razer Barracuda HP-1 Gaming Headphones Review
MVK Tech :: Sunday, September 10, 2006
“Razer has become a powerful name in gaming peripherals with cutting-edge technology such as their gaming mice, surfaces, accessories, keyboards and audio products. Professional gamers, to enthusiasts and you’re grandma can all agree on one thing, Razer products kick ass. We have had the pleasure of using Razer’s gaming mice and surfaces over the last several years and have a lot of experience with the Diamond Back, Diamond Back SE, Copperhead and eXactMat products. And with excellent results from using these products as our main interface devices, there was no doubt in our minds we wanted to check out the new Razer Barracuda HP-1 Gaming Headphones.”

Xbox 360: Ninety-Nine Nights
Bytesector :: Sunday, September 10, 2006
“According to the legend, after Ninety-Nine Nights of darkness the world will be wiped clean of humans and goblins, or was that 40 days and 40 nights of rain and a bumpy boat ride for some guy named Noah? Microsoft and Q Entertainment/Phantagram have animated this flimsy biblical allusion into an eye-pleasing, combo-wielding, simple-minded action title. The story involves two mysterious magical orbs of dark and light, and a force that positions all seven playable characters, albeit in a disjointed fashion, along a mutually destructive path to war.”

Razer Barracuda™ HP-1 8 Channel Gaming Headphones at Modders-Inc.com
Modders Inc. :: Sunday, September 10, 2006
Razer, the leader in high performance gaming mice, has jumped full force into the sound products arena with their Barracuda HP-1 Headphones. Razer knows how much gamers want the best hardware available to beat down their opponents and hearing your foe before he hears you can mean a win or a loss! Did Razer do what they set out to do and give users of the Barracuda HP-1 Headphones an advantage over everyone else?

How to Protect Your Eyes While Gaming
Laptop Gamers :: Sunday, September 10, 2006
Health professionals recommend that gamers must take a break every 40 minutes to an hour. They must get up from the computer or gaming console and stretch their limbs, walk around a bit, and look at objects at a great distance.

Razer Barracuda HP-1 Gaming Headphones Review at XYZ Computing
XYZ Computing :: Sunday, September 10, 2006
Despite Razer’s great reputation for making hardware, the audio market will not necessarily be as hospitable to their expansion as the input device market has been. As opposed to doing more of what they do best, this is a new area for Razer and they have to deal with some major competition from companies like Creative, Shure, and Sennheiser. While competing with big companies is nothing new to Razer, they might be a bit out of their comfort zone with audio products.
