What a fitting news item for the 6 year anniversary of my site. Yes, it’s been 6 whole years since the first incarnation of this site limped onto Geocities and shocked the world with a -gasp- portable Atari 2600. Shortly thereafter I was on the Gamespy network, then in 2004 I bought a domain of my own. It’s been a fun ride and now, for your viewing pleasure, I present the Xbox 360 Laptop!

These days, most people take a lot of effort to protect the applications and data on their computers. They install hardware firewalls, software firewalls, anti-virus software, anti-spyware, pop-up blockers, spam filters, annonymizers, root-kit detectors — you name it; people have it. Every few days a new anti something-that-doesn’t-have-anti-yet comes out and people add it to their arsenal of must have software. Some people get so paranoid that they go overboard with the protection. Recently I met a guy who had four different anti-spyware programs on his computer, because someone told him that no anti-spyware catches all spyware. His computer was so slow that it barely crawled, but this guy was blissful in the belief that he had fortified his computer’s defenses. “Defense in Depth,” he said to me, repeating a phrase he undoubtedly heard from a system administrator.

We’ve already seen ATI make its first moves in this seasonal ritual, lifting the curtains on the Radeon X1950 XTX and its more affordable cousin, the Radeon X1900 XTX 256MB. Now it’s Nvidia’s turn to respond with a new GeForce that knows one very cool trick: how to perform like a $300 card while selling for about two hundred bucks. This new GeForce 7900 GS will make your phosphor glow in successive colors almost as rapidly as the GeForce 7900 GT, but it runs quieter and costs less. This isn’t exactly a revolutionary upsurge in graphics power, but it’s better than burning your hand on a Pentium 4.

Today sees NVIDIA announce two new products in the high end of the mid-range, launching one with immediate availability to boot, in order to do something with less-than-perfect G71 silicon in one instance, and phase out an existing product with something they think is better in the other. The purpose of this article was to see how the drivers from ATI and NVIDIA are doing and they are coming along. Neither are what we would call shipping-caliber as both companies lack a ton of features. The NVIDIA drivers don’t offer overclocking, GPU temperature monitoring, SLI graphics and many other features that I would call required. I’m a gamer and if my games play ~20-30% faster on XP Professional then you wont see me switch operating systems till the DirectX 10 titles come rolling out.”

Some of the kinder and well written programs are configurable and allow you to change the settings that starts them up. If this option is available, then this is the best approach. There are, however, many programs that do not give you the choice and no matter how many times you remove them, they return. Two that I find really annoying are the “Windows Messenger” and the “Quicktime Task”. Both sit in the system tray and I don’t need or want them there. I’ll show you how to get rid of them forever if you have Windows XP Pro or Windows 2000. For those with Windows XP Home, this solution will not work.
