The CoolMax CTG-1000 is certainly one powerful power supply, there is no question about that. It will provide more than sufficient power to almost any system out there, and honestly most systems out there don’t need this much power. As systems become more powerful, with dual core / dual processor setups and perhaps quad SLI, the demand for this type of power will become more real. I expect that we would then see more of these 1000W (or larger) power supplies.

An ASUS-made Radeon X1900XTX graphics card got its cooler exchanged for a two-stage compressor cooler which forced it down to -80°C and moved the frequencies up to a whopping 909MHz GPU and 1800MHz memory. Intel’s X6800 processor was equipped with a similar two-stage setup with temperatures down to -100°C and this resulted in a frequency of 4.69GHz using a 11x multiplier and a 1706MHz processor bus.

Sometime ago, Thermaltake introduced a slew of new power supplies — six to be exact. They include: Toughpower 650W, 700W & 750W units with modular and non-modular configurations. This time around I’m going to check out SLI certified non modular Thermaltake Toughpower 750W unit (W0117RE). The major differences between this generation of Toughpower units and last (prior to 650W) are quad +12V rails and larger fans (140mm).

We have tested ATI’s latest with a good cross section of games ranging from current first person shooters such as PREY to Microsoft’s upcoming Flight Simulator X and we also pit the board against current ATI and Nvidia hardware to see if its worth an upgrade.
