You may not know this, but there is a fast moving trend among power users which began in the corporate office and will end in your home. You may not be aware of it yet, but very soon you will be telling others about it. A few years back, IT directors noticed that it might save their company a lot of money to have a device which did all of the same functions as a file server, but without the cost and overhead of an operating system. Since licensing costs have soared in the corporate environment, devices known as Network Attached Storage (NAS) servers have started showing up everywhere. Up until recently, these items were usually somewhat expensive, and very limited in functionality. With technology evolving at a tremendous rate, it didn’t take long for the NAS servers to completely replace the networked file servers and reach prices that even home users could afford.

Msi has sent us a sample of their K9N Neo-F motherboard for socket AM2 and we are going to test it with our brand new 4800+ X2 processor to see what type of speeds we can get out of it. Imagine yourself a PC enclosure designer, charged with the responsibility of distinguishing your company’s product from a crowded field of competitors. Tough job, eh? Admittedly, cases have come a long way from the beige box days (for those of you who were alive back then), but they generally must adhere to a set formula…mount a motherboard, power supply, drives & peripherals.
Aside from purely aesthetic changes, one thing a case designer can do is take advantage of new technology to add features, an opportunity that presents itself rarely. There one is very ripe opportunity for case designers at the moment, though, and that opportunity comes from hot-swappable SATA technology. As we pointed out in a recent article here at DH, SATA drives are fighting their way out of internal, permanent drive bays and into the open, where one of their coolest features can be readily used.

This is definitely a first for the big CPU giant who tried to prevent overclocking by introducing locked multipliers and even removing asynchronous bus clocks in its early PCI Express 915 chips.
Today we have Intel’s D975XBX2 or Bad Axe 2 motherboard in our test labs. This board was originally intended to be the flagship board for the Core 2 Quad. While we did have it to use for the Core 2 Quad, we decided to use our trusty Gigabyte DQ6 for our CPU review, as its proven to overclock to the max. This time we are looking at the board which Intel provided and just to see how well it stacks up to the mother of all Core 2 overclocking boards, the Gigabyte P965 DQ6. ”

Well, one point in interest is they way you install the OS and take advantage of most of the features with one peripheral, the CDROM. As some are aware Vista recommends a DVD Drive with the system and to take advantage of some features it also requires a DVD drive. Most have already upgraded to or maybe your system came with a DVD ROM already. Drives included with most systems as well as most drives offered before a year ago were slow. Burning a full DVD can take a slower DVD drive a hour or more. Considering the peripheral market today for DVD RW ROM drive is relatively cheap there is no reason to settle for slow drives. Our friends at AOpen sent over a Triple format DVD Rewriter for us to take a look at.”

The unit is beige in colour, and supports Serial ATA I and Serial ATA II hard drives. The HDD caddy is made of aluminum which should help keep high speed drives a littler cooler than plastic would. There is also a small 40mm ADDA fan at the back of the unit to draw air through the unit. The Scythe Kama-Thermo is a very simple, blue backlit temperature LCD display with a connected diode. The cheap price tag makes it very appealing to most case modders. It is quite small, but has large enough digits and a very good contrast so that the temperatures can be read from further away. The Kama-Thermo combines simplicity and functionality to form a great little device.
