ATI Radeon X1650XT vs. Nvidia GeForce 7600GT

The next generation of mid-range graphics cards are just around the corner, so should you even consider purchasing a GeForce 7600GT or Radeon X1650XT graphics card? Currently the average 7600GT costs just $130, while the X1650XT is closer to $150. At these prices both present very affordable upgrade solutions, and while we can not predict the future something tells us that we won’t see DirectX10 cards this affordable until at least the end of next year.
Given the fact that both products can run the majority of new games at 1600×1200 with maximum in-game quality settings enabled, there is no real reason why you should ignore them in the hope that the next generation mainstream contenders will be much more powerful.

After reviewing HIS’ X1950 Pro Turbo card just the other day we now take a look at their X1650 XT. You may think that the X1650 XT is just a slightly higher clocked X1650 Pro but you would be wrong. Yes the XT does have a tad increase in clock speed over the Pro version, 5MHz in core speed and 60MHz in memory speed, but the biggest difference is in the physical structure and architecture of the card.

The Samsung SyncMaster 960BF is an all white 19 inch LCD monitor. The panel sports a 4ms pixel response time, 700:1 contrast ratio, a highly adjustable base, and runs at a native resolution of 1280×1024. The unit itself is anchored by a large heavy base, and the bezel is all white with light gray highlights. This colour scheme is reminiscent of a Mac Mini , and this monitor along with a Mac keyboard and mouse would like quite nice next to such a unit. In the PC world, it’s difficult to find an all white computer. The closest one can come is beige or off-white. As for those who have silver or black computers, well that is a matter of wanting a well performing monitor versus wanting something that matches.

The ASUS EAX1950Pro is an excellent buy for the consumer at $199 retail. It has all of the DirectX 9.0c features that you would want for today’s computer games and the performance that outstrips its nearest competitor in most cases. ASUS has done a stellar job with their card, with it having a unique heat sink with a heat pipe not found on other X1950Pros. As such I can easily give the card a Silver Gamers’ Choice award.
