I used a FLAC backup of my CD “Bad Company – Desolation Angels” then connected the Sirocco into my Akai receiver using the analog jack for R/L (Incidentally, Sondigo use a FLAC based codec for the Sirocco). I then connected the Sirocco to the Akai using Toslink, I honestly could not differentiate between the two (which is actually a good thing as older CD music is recorded 2 channel).”

As the technology of flat screen monitors gets faster and cheaper all the time, and the space on my desk being constantly eaten away by this rather bulky 15″ CRT, I decided to get myself a new monitor. The monitor that I chose was a Hanns-G 191D 19″ widescreen TFT Monitor, available from Microdirect, and coming in at £129.24 Inc vat, it wasn’t too heavy on the bank balance either. Not only has it a rather budget price tag, it also has a really good spec.

Chances are that you someone who has a nice computer but uses terrible speakers. You know, those cheap stereo speakers that come free with a purchase or you buy for $15 as an afterthought. Similarly, you probably know even more people who listen to their digital music through the speakers on their laptop. Some of these people don’t care about their sound quality, others don’t have the room for a speaker system, but too many of them simply think that they can’t afford quality sound. Logitech is trying to change all of this with their X-540 speakers. This kit retails for $99 but packs in a considerable amount of features and functionality. This kit is not for audiophiles, but if you want solid sound at a reasonable price Logitech may have the product for you.

The fact that it is network attached allows the user to place the device where it is convenient rather than taking up space and generating more heat inside the HTPC. The addition of a wall mount bracket would allow the unit to be mounted next to the cable splitter and amp./

Lets start with the Basics. HD-DVD has the potential to be 36.55 Megabits per second, but tends to average about half of that. Marketplace videos or at least the one I checked out ‘V for Vendetta’ is 6.5 Megabits VBR. Account for 720p vs 1080p and you are looking at about 2.25 more pixels so pixels per bit the two are pretty close.
Conclusion HD-DVD is spectacular I was unable to find a single artifact in the copy of ‘V for Vendetta’ the same was true for Tokyo Drift which is rather hard content to encode. Marketplace videos on most TV’s in most home theatres, also spectacular. You being the Video enthusiast and cocky SOB that you probably think you have a home theatre that the quality difference will matter, well you are probably wrong.
Unless you have: * A 1080p Display, that really runs at 1920×1080 as its native resolution. * Have paid someone to calibrate the TV to reference, not the Dynamic, or Vibrant mode that many TV’s are set to. * Have disabled noise reduction on your TV. * Are Viewing in a theatre lit room.

Back in August of 2005 we did know that HD DVD, which used DVD production technology, would be easier to bring to market but it simply did not seem reasonable that Sony would put their PlayStation franchise at risk for anything but a technology they were absolutely certain they could bring to market on time. That turned out to be incorrect. The problems with Blu-Ray have created extreme cost and execution problems for Sony and now their premier division (instead of being the profit center for Sony) is predicting they will take a $1.5B loss next year largely resulting from this decision. To put this in perspective, just think what would happen if Apple’s iPod group, instead of generating massive profit, suddenly dropped into massive loss. Now you can see why the Sony PlayStation division just changed out their top executives. ”
