The Tarantula is what Razer calls the “first definitive keyboard created by gamers for gamers”. Though is not close to being the first keyboard designed for gaming, it will be interesting to see what Razer was able to do in order to optimize their keyboard for competition. Based on their experience with mice, the Tarantula is definitely something to keep an eye on if you don’t think a standard keyboard offers all the gaming features you would like. Right now there is considerable competition in the input device market, especially by companies looking to get as much money as they can out of demanding consumers. No one is more demanding of their equipment than gamers, but just piling on extra features is not enough to make a successful product. It will be interesting to see how well Razer was able to balance ease of use with innovation.

The mouse pad itself excels in many areas, but the price may seem a bit stiff to some people as it sells for $29.99 U.S, which is a bit pricey for this type of product. The question of course at the end of the day is whether the product actually merits that type of case. I would have to say yes in my perspective as after using it for a week I don’t see how I got along without it. It really has become an extension of my work area and one that functions well.

For this week’s Freeware Frenzy, I will take a look at Inkscape 0.44.1. Similar to Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape lets you create professional vector graphics quickly and easily. What are vector graphics? Traditional bitmap images use fixed resolutions, making them blurry when stretched to new sizes. Scalable Vector Graphics instead can be displayed correctly at different resolutions, hence the scalability. I rarely use graphics programs such as these, but a professional appearance can give a business or school project an edge over the competition. So being familiar with these programs can certainly be worthwhile.

After a long summer break, I return somewhat rested with my pencils and books, and somewhat reluctant to take notes at my first class of high school. I walk into the building–high-tech modern school structure. As the instructor is about to start his discussion, my fellow students take out their laptop. In fact, everyone takes out their laptop–after a momentary pause, I hear a hundred instances of the Windows XP jingle as they boot up. Apparently, they need their laptop to “take notes”.
